Destiny - Review Thread

The real disappointment for me is the PvP. How could Bungie fail at that? It's like they mailed it in with everything.

Thats an interesting argument. Do you feel that multiplayer only games should demand equal price to those that provide both an SP and MP?

Depends on the game. I bought Titanfall at $35, but I think after playing it that it could conceivably demand a higher price. If Bungie had focused their budget and time into the multiplayer over the single player, it'd be a better game.

It probably is closer to being an MMO

It has 4 classes that specialise in something and it has a healer

MMO confirmed

MMO is not defined by the number of players. If you can meet everyone on the game at the same place and at the same time, it's an MMO. Most multiplayer online shooters only have lobby/hub to meet random people at a certain room/map. BF4 is not an MMO, Diablo III is not an MMO. Destiny? Absolutely not.

God fucking dammit, now I have the biggest buyers remorse, why did I preorder this digitally. I haven't even have time to play it yet, and reviews seem to indicate it's mediocre.

Please don't say you took my post seriously

My opinions of Destiny have changed dramatically since running Devils' Lair strike. The game is incredible when playing with others and working together.

Solo its just OK.

For the same good scaling I also prefer this. Beeing overely accurate on a score rating something like a game is just not useful in my book. A 3/5 is worth checking out if I like the setting and genre. 4/5 is a very good game definetly a recommendation. 5/5 should be rare and a must play for anyone.

Exactly how I feel about it.

I've never understood how anything more specific than that is justifiable really. What is the difference between, say an 80 and an 81 score? Or a 94 and a 95? Every single point on the scale should be clear cut and easy to explain.

Less people falling for the PR hype for Destiny 2 will hurt big time.

I blame the terribly poor and yet extravagant communication from Bungie. They promised us tons of stuff yet never clearly explain what the game was going to be like (structure wise) and in the end, tons of stuff are missing.

How to fix the hype for the second ? Easy : fix the first one and communicate on that:
" NEW PLANETS (MERCURY ! EUROPA !) NEW RAIDS, NEW PLACES ! (OLD CHICAGO ! OLD INDIA !) MORE GUNS !

etc...

That would be smart of them.

I do have the feeling that helped the sales.

Destiny isn't an MMO, it's a barebones FPS that makes you waste a shitload of time swapping out items and armor and visiting vendors for no good reason. There is no "social experience" whatsoever aside from running into random players, but you can't talk to them or do anything with them aside from killing things.

Find it funny people are hoping for sub 70 scores... like they care. They sold like 10 million copies in a day

Short term, they wanted a 10 year brand but not only is the Destiny brand in tatters after a few days but the trust and reputation towards Bungie is smashed as well. The consumer won't be so trusting of their next ambitious project, I would say this has done huge damage to them long term.

I'm really torn on what to think about these reviews.

On one hand despite REALLY enjoying the game, the fact that every aspect of the game that isn't art or combat sucks would make it hard for me to give it even 4/5.

That said many of the outlets giving this game 6s/7s basically have given 8s/9s to tons of pieces of garbage so it's weird that this game is the time they decide to actually be serious about review scores.

Potentially a knee-jerk response to the recent criticisms (again) against games journalism. I find that whenever we have a 'scandal' arise, review scores typically drop a bit because there is an expectation from sites and editors to present more professional editorials and reviews.

Otherwise, it's also a bit of a response to what feels a bit like 'cloak-and-dagger' marketing from Activision and Bungie that had everybody fooled. The general public response to the Beta suggested that the full game was going to be the sections presented there cranked to 11 - not representative of an actual large fraction of the game (as it actually is).

As much as we hate the hype machine, from a review standpoint, refusing the press advance copies AND THEN also handing in a game that is disappointing compared to the hype building up to it - it can leave a sour taste, which reflects on the score.

That dumb ass plants vs zombies multiplayer only shooter?

... It was actually a pretty fun game? Simplified, yes, but I suppose if we're reviewing the game based on it's presented merits, it wasn't that bad.

And spinmetal, I have ton of spinmetal

I can't believe IGN U.S didn't get their review up yesterday. It kinda reeks of just waiting to take the temperature of everyone else, to see what you should give it.
I don't remember any publisher/developer-facilitated "features" about Destiny leading up to its release (as opposed to, say, Alien: Isolation). I'm therefore guessing they won't score it very favorably, but with a big budget bonus.

At least some people have learned a valuable lesson: never believe the excuses of a publisher who says they're not sending out review copies. It's because they're worried about bad PR from bad scores, nothing else.

Don't be. Ignore reviews as they are just opinions, nothing more.
I played the alpha and beta and loved it. Bought the game day one and have been playing it till the early hours every day since.

It's not revolutionary as some people thought it would be, but I've already had a ton more fun with it in a couple of days time than I had with a certain other shooter that I had been playing for nearly a year up till the release of Destiny.

It does a ton of stuff brilliantly, yet sticks to familiar territory a little too much at times, that's all.
Play it and make up your own mind. Don't let anyone else tell you how good or bad a game is.

Hell, if I did this I would never buy games like EDF or the Warriors/Basara series, and those are some of my favourite games ever. yet they get scored 4/10 by a ton of "professionals" all the time.

In my opinion the 1-10 scale would easily the best if reviewers used it properly.

1-5 leaves too many grey areas and risks grouping games of differing quality too liberally, while 1-100 doesn't really make sense at all.

The real problem is the industry has no universal grading system, which means sites such as Metacritic and Gamrankings end up shoehorning different grading systems in to it's own formula (3/5 becomes a 6/10).

GT is known to fall for the hype, so maybe.

Why do you say that? I've always had the impression of them as more independent minded than others. I certainly remember they were one of the few to not herald Skyrim as GOTY back in 2011 and tend to give less attention to Indie flavour of the month titles than others while being more balanced between western/eastern games as many of the other mainstream outlets are more favourable to western games.

The same was said after Watch Dogs with their embargo, some people just can't resist the hype and publishers know it.

I hope some day we learn the history of this games development. I suspect Activision knew early on it had problems, and took appropriate action to guarantee a little profit.

My whole friends list is still playing it, and enjoying it, as am I. Could be another case of the vocal minority here.

The game has been out for less than a week. What are the odds of "your whole friends list" still playing the game this time next week? Next month? Next year?

I like the game too, but unless Bungie/Activision act fast and make good on some of their promises (without nickel and diming us to death in the process), they're going to meet a far less enthusiastic audience when Destiny 2 rolls around.

And wishing that Destiny should fall under 70 is kind of a joke or what? You want games to be rated bad? Why would you want that. People had plenty chance to check if the gameplay was theirs to like. If you think content is sparse and the story is bad ok, but why would this make you wish for bad ratings?

i dont want games to be rated bad, i want bad games to be rated bad. So that the devs will know their game is bad and they should make better games. Pretty simple logic really.

for destiny id say 6/10 would be spot on. Even 5.5 is not that crazy if the main thing you wanted from the game was good singleplayer.

That's hyperbole. Nothing is in tatters or smashed. Lots of folks don't like the game doesn't = Bungie is screwed.

Fat chance

I agree with most of the reviews. I think they exaggerate a bit. An empty house built on a solid foundation? More like a house that needs a few more chairs and the kitchen refurbished built on a solid foundation.

I still can't stop playing it and that's all that matters to me. I hope bungie has big plans for putting more in this house though.

If the main thing you want is good singleplayer, I'd suggest you're the wrong person to review Destiny tbh

It's an intrinsically multiplayer game. Even the combat arenas are clearly designed to be tackled from multiple angles, with multiple players

(not a comment on any complaints about the story and general campaign, which are completely valid imo)

I'm loving it.. played beta.. ordered the Guardian edition.. still loving it.. put about 20 to 25 hours into it and I'm still on the moon. played a ton of crucible and love that too. no idea about some of these complaints. I'm sure people dont like the titan slam thing.. i dont either.. but i bet people dont like when i use my arc blades and slice their asses up.... so i just take the game as it is... to me it sounds like bitching cause they suck. most fun I've had in multiplayer fps in years.
