Destiny - The Taken King |OT| Time to Explain

I'm curious, how do early adopters feel in that they paid 60 for the base game a year ago that was underdeveloped and pretty rough in places, now they pay 40 to bring it up to what is being touted as "what it should've been all along" for a total of $100.

Meanwhile someone who has never played it can get the lot today for 60.

Early adopters getting screwed over again or are you OK with it? Honest question, not trying to stir anyone up.

You are forgetting the 40 bucks for "Dark Below" and "House of Wolves". Both Add-Ons are necessary for Taken King. If you didn't own them before you basically had to get the $60-version of Taken King, too. So if you bought anything the day it came out you are paying $140. If you played Vanilla and are now getting back to Destiny you are paying 120$.

Basically the price of a monthly MMO-subscription.

Those crucible quests will be the death of me. I'm ok with modes like control, but Shaxx keeps forcing me kick ass at extermination or salvage to move forward.

My point still stands. Bungie did not cut out finished content to only sell it back to us later.

You don't know that and neither do I. I can only make assumptions from all the evidence we have regarding cut content in Destiny (Reef Footage in a Destiny trailer from 2013, mission names from add-ons on the game map in trailers from E3 2013 etc. I actually produced a lengthy video about all the cut content back in 2014, here is the direct comparison of both maps. Ignore the german talking in the background ;) https://youtu.be/LKGT-CUheeM?t=4m4s) and how natural and obvious this re-integration of Add-On-Content into the Vanilla game feels. It doesn't feel like an extension, it feels like one of the integral parts of the story that was so plainly missing in Vanilla.

I don't really want to steer this thread into that direction though. Was just an interesting observation that I thought would be worth sharing. We should be happy about a seemingly good, new content pack with Taken King :)

I hate this thread. I haven't played since the first couple of weeks HoW launched. I was done with Destiny. Read this thread and the community thread and I'm in the process of downloading TTK right now. I feel so dirty.

Can't wait to get home and start playing.

Checked the OP and I apologize if this has been asked before but, I have a regular copy of Destiny and never bought any of the DLC. Would playing this with the recent changes be a good way to see if this game can hook me again before buying the new version?

Rather interested in giving the game another try just don't want to dump the $60 into it without being sure.

You'll get a feel for how the new systems are, but not how good the new content is. That may or may not sway you depending on what your issues with the original game were.

Yes, just load up what you have, start a new character and see if the new presentation does it for you.

Getting 500+ hours out of year one made it worth it to me.

Awesome, that's what I was thinking. Thanks for the info.

I'm playing a female warlock (?) she has blue skin. It feels good. I heard that I can upgrade to level 25 immediately. Should I do this?

If it's your first character to 25+ I'd say no, to at least experience the entire thing from the start. Use it on your second or third character though.

Day 1 Guardian here. Honestly, I've loved Destiny from the beginning. Sure, it was a very flawed game (and still is) and it had its ups and downs, but at the end of the day, I've had a blast playing it. I've spent a lot of time (and money...two collectors editions later) playing Destiny and it still surprises me.

^ what he said, playing since alpha (took a break from late june? i think until last week), if you realize it's an mmo-style game with a non-mmo-standard billing system, it's totally worth it for the amount of fun i have with it. i'm the first to agree with legit complaints too, i just think the fun outweighs the complaints, especially because they are actually improving it a LOT since the beginning.

I really dislike this common gaming narrative. "Early adopters" always get "screwed" because most things only get cheaper over time. No one is getting screwed though because this is a misguided way of looking at it.

New players are getting a fantastic value but I don't feel "screwed over" for paying $60 + $35 for content that I played for a full year straight, which is unheard of for me. Also as a direct result I hardly bought any other games this year.

I have a PSN (EU) code for TTK for sale for PS4 if anyone in here hasn't purchased the expansion yet! Selling for cheaper than it is on the EU PSN store.

Like 90% of my gear needs Relic Iron to upgrade. Is it like that for everyone else? Only one piece of gear required wormspore, but I got a better roll of it that required relic iron again .

$40 was a steal for this... seriously. Heck, $60 for the full package for new players is an unbelievably fantastic value.

If only from day 1 it had the story presentation that the TTK content does... this game would have been so much more special right out of the gate... I'm glad they had a chance to bring it up to form. At some point, their initial vision must have been something closer to this...

Those people who got to try Destiny long before release and said "The game sucks", "They're Fucked", etc... I'd love their impressions of how TTK compares to what they first played.

Court of Oryx is super fun. Just burning bosses one after another with a 6 people feels great. Can't wait to try the tier 3 version.

I jumped into this last night with apparently a random fireteam of three other guardians. It was a lot of fun and I got a ton of engrams out of it despite not ever being the initiator. I love that you can just run up there and join in a fight in progress.

If only I had known there was a quest related to Court completions...

So I beat the Crota raid for the first time and got a rocket launcher that is garbage compared to new greens and blues.

They really need to change the rewards for the VOG and Crota raids. Some of the hardest contact in the game should not be rewarding garbage.

Were you having issues where after killing some bosses, you wouldn't get rewards? I had a few runs where we killed like 5-6 bosses and only got like 3 engrams.

That is NOT some of the "hardest" content in the game.

Once upon a time, sure, but not anymore.

Plus, you're doing level 32 content. So expect level 32 rewards.

Thinking of buying the digital copy of this game, is it account locked? Or can I buy it on my master account and play it on multiple accounts on my ps4?

Probably. It's random after all. My engrams mostly came from random adds though I swear one popped out of the chest once when I didn't use the rune or open it. It could have been from an enemy that was on the platform I suppose.

Thanks. I could always just get them again from the kiosks, right? (Not that I can see why I would want to. (Well, except for the Crucible.))

I don't believe you can get legendary weapons from kiosks, but as far as exotics, yes you can just pick up the year 1 versions for pretty cheap if I remember right from that kiosk. You can also get the year 2 attack version for 125 legendary marks.

It took probably 3 hours with six people, and nothing I've played in TTK is any harder. Crota was fucking glitching all around and kept enraging. So I disagree, still some of the hardest content in the game. And the rewards are level 20, a level 32 rare is seriously better than a level 20 legendary. So no, you're wrong. They need to fix the raid rewards.

Yeah, sorry, I was referring specifically to exotics. All right, thanks for taking the time to answer my questions! Really appreciate it.

The won't though.

They already said old content like VOG and CROTA are for novelty now, for nostalgia, NOT for progression. Unless you count the motes you get I guess.

Early Story spoiler (in a Destiny Thread no less!) question.
Is the Queen dead? Asshole Brother too? If so how does the Reef function, is there a new Awoken Monarch?

Well, that's fucking dumb, considering the expansions are pretty much bundled with most versions of TKK, so I would imagine a lot of people will be playing Crota and HOW and being like wtf is with these drops.

In a grimoire card, asshole brother is confirmed alive and trying to find out if his sister is still alive.

The rewards are level 20 because of how the old light system worked. The item quality is very much level 32.

Did you play Crota with a group of people new to the encounter? That might explain some of the time discrepancies. Crota's end can be done in about 20-25 minutes with a good group. Less time for some crazy people. In fact, most of Crota's lair can be solo'd.

Either way, Crota's End is no longer recognized by Bungie as end game content. They do not want players to go back through old raids in an effort to gain max level gear. They are just left there as mementos.

If you want something more challenging with better rewards right now, try to higher level difficulty Court of Oryx stuff, or tomorrow the new Raid opens up "King's Fall".

I'm unable to even enter the game. I can get as far the lobby but whenever I select a region to land on it disconnects the game. And kicks me back to the lobby. And that's if I'm lucky, most of the time it doesn't allow me to go past the title screen. Any solution? Or am I forced to wait. I've had this problem since yesterday.

Don't really want to install everything again.

Um, right, that's why they should change the drops to reflect the new light level system across the whole game. It's pretty fucking weird to have parts of the game running under year 1, and parts under year 2, when they're selling this as primarily destiny + expansions + tkk.

Didn't see it in the OP, but which of the original strikes were retouched, and am I able to play the updated strikes by selecting them from the director?

I am so back into this damn game again. I've been having an absolute blast. Just got light level 267 last night before bed. I should start getting maxed (well 280 light) legendaries as drops soon.

One thing I just am not used to in Destiny is having "too much" to do. I have 3 pages of quests I'm working on, a whole new set of strikes, leveling up my subclass, ranking up reputations. I mean damn. This is a good feeling to have. Hope it doesn't dry up all at once.

I'm really hoping I get light level 280 tonight, I want to be ready for the raid when it releases. Going through VoG was a magical experience the first time, I hope I can get that feeling again with this new raid (hope to god it's not like Crota's End).

I also need to look up a guide on Reddit for all these keys/keycards/chests on the Dreadnought. I love that there's little mini quests for that kind of stuff. There were a lot of great ideas brought into this expansion.

I want to share the spoils I got. Bare in mind I haven't done any Court of Oryx

Light Level: 286

I bought the new Dry Rot 32 type shotty from New Monarchy for 150 marks... It's insane.

V2 Alpha Lupi for both Hunter and Titan.

The Exotic Scout from Petra and Exotic Handcannon (that has firefly) from Gunsmith Rank 3.

The new Matador variant with Rangefinder.

Steel Oracle like Rocket Launcher in Arc (max radius) at 290 ATK...

Firefly sniper that has the stats of an LDR, one in void and one in arc.

We did Nightfall with 2 wipes with a 240 light dude lol.

So tonight I only have the Exotic Shotty bounty to finish (one more quest) and 5 heroic strikes for my New Monarchy cape.

After which I will be Dead Orbit on my Hunter.

A few max legendaries like a Sidearm and HC with Third Eye and Firefly at like 288 ATK.

All of the Mars strikes were updated.

Anytime you queue them up, parts of the strikes will either have Vanilla, retouched, or Taken enemies in them. Bosses being the same for the most part.

Also the new Heroic strike playlist includes all of the TTK strikes, and the Mars strikes since they have Taken enemies in them. So there are 7 total you can experience.

So, if someone with a US PSN account has TTK and the expansions installed on a PS4, apparently you can log in with an EU PSN account and access the features.

My main PSN account is the latter but, after having moved to the US, I bought a complete edition of Destiny that came with download codes. These couldn't be redeemed on my main so I created a US account and, lo and behold, I could accept quests for House of Wolves.

Weird thing but thought I'd share. Shame I only found this out after having played with my new Titan on the US account. Guess I'll keep gong there as I really don't want to replay those first few missions again.

On the plus side, the new quest log and way the missions are given out by the NPCs in the tower make a vast improvement over the weird disconnected jumping directly from mission area to mission area in vanilla destiny. I stopped playing soon after launch and it feels quite different, for the better.

So I did the court of oryx last night. Pretty awesome.

But, does only the person who presented the rune get rewards from that chest? And do you not have to actually open the chest?

The person who presented the rune gets guaranteed rewards. Everyone else just has a chance. Finishing the event automatically opens the chest and loot shoots out so make sure to look around and maybe under the ledge to make sure you didn't miss anything.

If you presented a rune, when the event is over, you will have a cooldown that prevents you from instantly summoning again so other players can have a chance to activate it.

I said I wasn't going to do it but I went ahead and got TTK last night. I was pretty disappointed in the opening sequence as most of it comprised of shots from the trailer. I was thinking, "Here we go again. A couple cinematics and that's all the story we get" but I must admit I have been pleasantly surprised so far. We have some backstory, some NPC interactions, new enemies, new armor, guns, ghosts, speeders, locations, etc etc etc. I haven't really gotten I delve into the new territories and missions much but from the looks of it, Destiny players are going to get their monies worth this time.
