Deux Ex Remastered announced (Aspyr), out Feb 5

Great pickup. Really does look like they've stripped out the reflections from that scene - which means it, along with every other scene that uses it (like UNATCO lobby), will actually look even worse than the original game. I shudder to think they'll stuff SSR in it's place...

the planar reflections in the original were insane. they could go 3 layers deep iirc. like theres a 1 way mirror in one room, that you can get behind, and see a bathroom sink mirror on the other wall, and It'd go multiple layers.
or in the disco, there's a room with fully reflective mirror walls that could double mirror you and shit.

oh god... if they add SSR I'll puke...

For their TR remastered, Aspyr actually used the original source code and updated the engine for modern machines. They brought in fans from the Open Lara project to assist, and let them assemble a crack team of preservationists, to ensure they represented the games as faithful as possible. That showed that Aspyr was at least trying to produce good remasters, even if they fall well short of Night Dive's heroic outputs.
Here for Deus Ex, it's clearly fucked from the first frame of the remaster in the trailer, so I'm guessing there's issues somewhere in the pipeline that's limiting what they can do. The original Deus Ex used a slightly modified UE1 - I wonder if they ran into license bullshit that maybe limited them here? Or maybe I'm just trying to rationalise someone butchering my favourite game.

it really just looks off... just not right... I'll wait for more gameplay but this is a bad first impression

Can't see it on Steam
Well, considering the official website from the trailer is currently available to purchase because it doesn't exist, I imagine Aspyr isn't running a tight ship on this project. The odds of Embracer giving them Deus Ex to remaster as a PS5 exclusive is 0%, so it'll at least come to PC. But like their Tomb Raider remasters, I fully expect this to be multiplatform across the board.

Perhaps the greatest game of all time.....handed off to goddamn fucking Aspyr.

How?

How in the name of all that is unholy do you not give this to NightDive?

Fucking how?!

Can we just have the interns at NightDive do it as a mod? The pets maybe? How about the janitors? Hell, just have the third shift employee at their local gas station do the remaster, it's sure to go better than fuckin Aspyr.

Goddammit. I was all pumped up when I read Deus Remaster announced, told my wife about it and she was pumped too, watched that trailer and now I feel like someone shot my dog.

Fuck.

wait wait wait... at 0:10

I am pretty sure that floor in that big red room with the hand has realtime planar reflections in the original. in their remaster it looks like they removed the reflections and just have some specular sheen

don't tell me they did that across the board... because the planar reflections were one of the key visual showpieces of the original. it was even used as a game mechanic in select moments (let you look around corners)

given how most modern games seems to be allergic to planar reflections, I am worried.

I coincidentally had a save state close to that room on my PC, so I loaded it up (killed every enemy in that damn place with my rocket launcher) and made a short video to show the planar reflections I mean: (note this is vanilla, fully unmodded)

and here the screenshot from the remaster trailer:

I mean... that is clearly partially a technical downgrade. this looks just wrong.

I think mods have done better. The world looks the same, including textures. Character models were "upgraded". I mean, maybe now it has controller support. Apparently that is worth $30...

Maybe gen Z can get in on some classic Deus Ex without quest markers. The horror.

No Thank You Reaction GIF

Everything shown is pretty bad. Really, just playing the original in high fps and high resolution is all it needs.

I think one is the one that highlights the issues the best.

The level geometery is simple, possibly identical to the original game, but they've massively increased the polygon count of the UNATCO trooper, so now he doesn't fit with the rest of the scene. They've swapped out the level textures for AI slop and slathered them in lighting they were never intended for, so now the artistic design is completely gone. The lighting is all over the place; the building is overexposed with blow outs and the shadows are total darkness, with zero of the Deus Ex's trademark mood in either. It's closer to Invisible War's pitch black shadows than Deus Ex's dimly lit world. The trooper's shadow doesn't even align to his model, and the direction isn't based on the bright lighting behind him, possibly indicating "sun based" dynamic character shadows... in a game that takes place exclusively at night. The light leak on the upper ridge of the building is embarrassing, and the lack of shadows cast from stone wall to the right of the door indicates they've dropped Deus Ex's lightmaps entirely with no equivalent, meaning the game actually has less accurate lighting and shadows than the 25 year old original.

And rewatching the trailer, when they swap to the modern JD, his lip syncing doesn't match the dialogue - meaning they've just used the original's faux-sync stand in.

This gets worse the more I look at it. I need to step away.

jesus christ that looks like shit.

like a bad fan texture replacement mod that went buck wild with sharpening and bump mapping.

OH MY FUCKING GOD... I have a theory on what happened here!

I just installed the community update, which includes Direct X8, 9 and 10 renderes. all of them are missing the reflections in this room!

all the direct X variants, and the software renderer miss the reflections! the only way to have the planar reflections is if you use the original Glide renderer (which is emulated on modern GPUs of course) or the OpenGL renderer. software and DX 8/9/10 all miss the reflections.

so my theory is that these idiots used the freaking Direct X community update as a reference here! instead of using the Glide renderer, which is the most accurate one when it comes to how the devs intended it to look like.
I think the GOG version I have just automatically uses the Glide emulation as the "hardware" render option, hence why it looks so accurate and why it looks the same as when I select Glide in the modded version. openGL seems very accurate too, but not fully. the texture here is not transparent enough when using the OpenGL renderer, and looks off. so Glide is the way to go for accuracy for sure (and again, I suspect the GOG version uses Glide emulation by default)

EDIT: and I have now confirmed, using any renderer that isn't Glide or OpenGL removes planar reflections FROM (almost) THE ENTIRE GAME!
the only working mirror when using Direct X that I have found is one of the most gameplay critical ones, which is this one here, where you can spot enemies around the corner:
VBvK0zb5QgDqaUk7.png

other save files I knew had mirrors nearby look like this (left = Direct X 8/9/10 ... right = Glide)
CXUGfUOwK5oRWx9A.png

what you see here is 2 walls that are full mirrors, one of them at an angle. in the original renderer you can see a 2 layer deep planar reflection, reflecting a reflection in a reflection, in real time.
completely gone in Direct X.

now I shudder at the thought of what ASSpyr did to this room! 😨

If they've gone with using the DX version as their base, then their handling of transparencies will be slightly borked, too. It's why I stuck with the Open GL renderer for so long. Water, grates, smoke, fog, gas grenades, etc.
Reading across the internet, they're getting raked over the coals by literally everyone for this crap. Fingers cross they delay it to actually, you know, do their jobs.

Literally the only game that excited me in the whole show.
I've never played it but if the remaster updates the controls to modern standards I'm all in.

I don't understand why the remaster looks like this - why didn't they do what oblivion did with ue5?
Because that would require a decent budget, and a team good enough to re-create everything up to modern standards. This is obviously a small-scale project and can't do that. And, that's totally fine - Night Dive has a made a name for themselves by making simple, high quality remasters for years, and I buy basically anything they make because it's always - always - high quality. WHat you're look at is the result of taking the lowest bidder.

Aspyr fucked up the Never Winter Nights 2 remaster so bad that it was outright rejected. Just straight up "no thank you". Fans still play the original and direct everyone to play that version instead. The original runs better, looks better, sounds better, plays better, has less bugs, and is cheaper.

I don't understand why it wasn't Night Dive then. Deus Ex is one of the greatest games ever made

The running theory I've seen: Embracer owns Aspyr and used them to make money quickly.
Now, I thought Square Enix owned Deus Ex, but it appears it was actually sold to Embracer and I forgot. Embracer cancelled it's own full Deus Ex project last year, and it appears this was what they decided to do with the IP. Given Embacer's financial troubles, it would seem they used Aspyr because it was in-house and cheaper, with Embracer hoping to make some quick bucks off of Deus Ex's name.
