Developers that should just stick with their best genres.

Now just about every dev has a certain genre that they excel at, but what devs have tried to branch out to another genre that ultimately failed? I think Square is a good one *cough* The Bouncer, Final Fantasy: Spirits Within *cough*.

square's ps1 genre experiments were awesome! einhander, tobal 2, bushido blade 1+2. i'd say those are the best games they've ever done.

and hey mewthree: re4 and dmc3 say hi.

Team Ninja should make nothing but action games.

Yeah, I'd say the opposite-of-Square, their non-RPG PSone titles were some of their best ever.

now there's one i can agree with, though i guess it's more a case of a developer branching out so successfully that the rest of their catalog pales. team ninja needs to drop titty fighter and its various spinoffs and go all ninja gaiden all the time.

Yeah, I'm not saying that their other work is bad, just that it's not the best use of their talent.
And, it doesn't have to be Ninja Gaiden as long as it's third-person, multi-opponent fighting.

I've never understood why the premiere fighting game developers did not go out and produce action-RPGs that made the encounters play out just like a one-on-one fight. Shenmue could've been 100x better if they had just allowed you to fight anywhere in the environments, VF control and all. Sure, they might have to scale back the environments a bit to suit the more fight-happy design, but it would've done wonders. No safe zones, per se...just encounters that could happen anywhere. If it's a matter of having too many characters on-screen for the engine to handle, well...that shouldn't be a real issue anymore on next-gen hardware. Someone needs to make this fucking happen. If done well, I would buy 100 copies of this game.

Well, their 2D series should stay 2D at least.

SF alpha, X7, etc.

Volition should have stuck to space sims, red faction 1/2 and the punisher paled in comparison to the Freespace games.

Haha this makes me think of that terrible Mortal Kombat sidescroller.

Unfortunely Volition doesn't own the rights for Freespace, thats Interplay, and the last thing i know is that Derek Smart is trying to buy those from Interplay, i hope he doesn't because he'll probably sue the FS mod community...

Lucasarts - Point 'n Click Adventure games. Come on, George!

[edit]Actually I remembered that a lot of the people behind those games left Lucasarts, so nevermind.

Capcom - 2D

This thread is going to explode due to this quote. You didn't happen to see the DMC3 thread on your trip thru GAF did you?

Oh and that 5300 post Resident Evil 4 thread comes to mind too.

BTW My avatar says hi.

Polyphony Digital. I don't know what the hell people saw in Omega Boost, you could just hold down two buttons and make it through most of the game. Stick to GT, guys.

Sega AM2. Just change the name to The Virtua Fighter Company Ltd.

From Software. More Armored Core and King's Field, and less of this dumb experimental Xbox crap.

Capcom. Wait, are they good at anything anymore?

SCEE Studio Camden. (assuming they haven't been reshuffled) MAKE MORE DROPSHIP

I was enjoying your posts, but now I think you suffer from a crippling brain disease.

Looks like I touched a few nerves. XD

Gamerankings can eat me. I know what I like, and hardly any of it comes from Capcom anymore. Let me know when they make another Megaman Legends/Tron Bonne game, a new fighting game worth a shit, or something that isn't ZOMG ACTION.

Speaking of which, I don't need another fuckin' third person action adventure from the company that should get back in the kitchen AND MAKE ME MAH ONLINE ARMORED CORE GOD DAMMIT!

Well, how about...

-Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
-Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
-Maximo series
-MegaMan Battle Network series
-MegaMan Zero series
-Mobile Suit Gundam Vs series
-Monster Hunter
-Ookami
-Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
-PN03
-Steel Batallion series
-Viewtiful Joe series

...Capcom's one of the most diverse Japanese developers out there really, and one of the few who has really moved forward this generation. I wouldn't mind MML3/Tron Bonne 2 myself though.

Well, I'd take top notch action games over C grade mech sims or D grade dungeon crawls anyday. Sounds like someone's just longing for the PS1 glory days, when crudeness like AC or KF were considered halfway playable. :P

Nintendo should drop the cheap lendouts to crap developers. Mairo pinball, metroid pinball etc. They should also stop sticking mario, DK or Zelda in every single spinoff title. Mario and Zelda are best when they are in their own "real"games.

jarrod, which part of, "I know what I like, and hardly any of it comes from Capcom anymore." are you not getting? I know what they make, but I refuse to bloat my hyperbole to cover every concievable list rebuttal. :P

However, I had indeed forgotten about Okami, I am very interested in that. So Capcom is making one game I care about, woo. I revise my "Capcom. Wait, are they good at anything anymore?" to read, "Capcom. PRETTY DOGGY GAMEZ ONLY PLZ"

...but not really. Goodness knows I would LOVE a new MML game or a new fighter that doesn't suck from them. :(

Well, when openly asking if Capcom makes anything good these days, you can't honestly be shocked when presented with a list of good Capcom games can you? Taste is one thing but I wouldn't be so quick as stake a developer's ability or worth on something so subjective. Personally, I think Polyphony Digital make pretty unengaging games (or "game" really) but I can still respect their ability as a developer and admire certain qualities in their releases. Their games aren't "bad" per se, just not my sort of thing.
