Devil Summoner (PS2): Don't know when the party is

Dunno about TGS but there have been little famitsu tidbits with new screens and characters here and there. There also was a short trailer that looked hot but we still don't really know how the battle system works (seems like a 2 man party).

I think the game is scheduled for winter but there's no date yet and they're not gonna be dumb enough to release it in the december rpg competition of stuff like KH2, Rogue Galaxy, and Tales of the Abyss so I'd guess it's probably a Jan/Feb release (Before the march FFXII month)

check the search function for Devil Summoner and you should find some threads with pics.

Thanks maskrider for the scans!

Devil Summoner looks hot as hell. Though I'm a little disappointed about the new real-time battle system. I mean, I'm not a huge fan of real-time battles (especially in JP-RPGs) and the battle systems in Nocturne, and DDS 1+2 were nearly perfect. An upgraded version of the press turn system would have been better, in my opinion.

By the way, the official homepage was updated today as well:

wow, PS2.5. seriously, this looks great

Love how the/one of the main playable characters is a general butler/limo driver/personal servant type.

Ive never played Nocturne but I have played DDS and the battle system in that is great. Im sure Atlus will do a great job with this game even though it could be a real time battle system. If the game is anything like DDS then there is nothing to worry about:D

I'm no expert, but that looks to be the uniform of an Imperial Navy officer circa WWII. Can anyone verify who the character is supposed to be? Meanwhile, the character design reminds me of Suehiro Maruo's Taisho era artstyle. (Note: Maruo's artwork is both amazing and disturbing; much of it is extrordinarily not safe for work, so be careful when firing up Google.)

Screens looks great.

I don't mind the real-time battle system at all. While I like turn-based too, what I'm really a fan of is variety. I don't want to play the same game over and over, so I'm glad Atlus is switching things up :)

Looks amazing.

I like the new-ish art style too, mind you, I love Kaneko, but it's a nice change of pace.

Does anyone know how well the DDS games did in the US? How likely is a localization?

I was under the impression that it's still Kaneko's art. Unless you just meant the semi-new direction his style has taken for this game (which I admittedly have not noticed...)?

Admittedly, I may just be seeing the new demons (ie, not from Nocturne or DDS)

I'm just glad he's not another angsty/radical teenager and is more down to earth(ish). :p

And I think they are new demons (since the elephant there doesn't look like Ganesha, Purski, and the two evil elephants). Of course, I am most likly wrong.

Four amazing Megaten Rpgs could be released here in North America in one generation? The fabric of space and time could not handle having its junk punched with such awesomenicity and would surely collapse in on itself if this came to pass.

PARTY COMES TO JAPAN ON JAN 26TH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Website is really packed with info at this point. Battles are indeed real-time with only a single demon helping you out.

Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner Kuzuha Raidou

or

Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner 3

or something else.

If they're going to bring over the PSP game (Dec 22nd Jpn release) as Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner they can't call the PS2 title that.

Here's a summary from the official site of how the real-time battle system works. This is from 1up .

Attacking an enemy weak point can either be done with magic attacks from your current summoned demon or with Raidou's gun that can be loaded with different elemental bullets. Hitting enemies causes them to freeze for a bit, allowing you to get some normal attacks in or attempt to seal the demon and recruit it for your own. It should be noted that hitting an enemy with an element the demon is strong against causes no damage.

image_b014.jpg

image_b015.jpg

Recruiting a demon consists of running up to a stunned enemy and quickly tapping circle as a 'seal gauge' in the upper right corner depletes. If you successfully deplete the meter within the set period of time you'll seal the demon and it will become a new member of your party. But you can't just seal demons all the time. Doing so requires items known as "MAG" and sealing must be done on a non-full moon night with enemies that are of the same level or lower than Raidou.

image_b027.jpg

Otherwise you can do a variety of normal sword slices and gun shots at any time in battle while controlling Raidou. Meanwhile you summon a demon and give it commands to do various magic spells. But there's a catch! Demons won't listen to what you're saying unless they like you. So you'll have to keep summoning them and try to build a strong bond between yourself and them so that they'll start doing what you them too and so that they will participate in team spells that are extremely powerful and can be done on stunned enemies.

image_b024.jpg

Defeating enemies gives both Raidou and your current demon exp. Similar to the other Shin Megami Tensei games, you get to choose how to distribute stat points when you level, and similar to Nocturne, demons gain pre-set stat points and learn new spells as they grow. In addition if your friendship with a particular demon is high they might give you presents when they gain a level.

Thanks for the link.

Real-time battles with just a single demon helping you out? Sounds odd. That's an odd departure from the usual megaten battle system. I also don't much care for the idea of "sealing" demons. Still, the game looks rather interesting. I'm psyched. I'll be picking it up, whenever it gets localized.

Well, you don't have to seal them. You can just kill them like you would in a normal rpg battle. Sealing them is basically just the way of getting new demons here, instead of talking to them in SMT3.

Yes, that is what I was referring to. I would much rather talk to them than mash the O button until they're sealed and join me.

I agree that talking is smarter and more interesting. But the idea here is to take SMT battles and make them into real-time action. So talking becomes mashing ^^;

:lol
Indeed. When streamlining the battle system, talking would just be far too slow. Still, the sealing does sound pretty intricate. Especially since you can only do it during a full-moon and you need the MAG item.

i played this at TGS and was not terribly impressed. i have to admit, as much as i love atlus SMT games, i am getting a bit bored of the whole thing with so many on PS2. it's like tony hawk or something -- getting one every six months is really starting to kill the buzz for me.

anyone saying this game looks graphically amazing has not actually seen it in person. for one, it's rendered backdrops (gag) and the battles are no more graphically intense than any of the existing SMT games, which rely much more on panache than technical achievement to look good.

as for the gameplay, i didn't play it for that long because i knew i wouldn't have time to write about it. jury's out, but i'm not sure what the point of having action-based encounters instead of an actual entire action game is. just makes life easier for the developers, i guess.

i'll repeat again: rendered backgrounds. BARF.

still, i don't doubt it will be a decent game (have these guys really ever made a bad one?) and it's got cool characters &c. i expect atlus to bring this out here -- not that i've heard anything one way or another besides the fact that they are fully committed to SMT from here on out.

Will this definately be brought over to the USA? If itr doesnt I'll go crazy, I love Atlus RPG's :D

It probably will considering that they're trying to make the SMT name more popular here. You can count on "Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner".

Is that really a fair comparison? There's a pretty good difference between Nocturne, DDS and Devil Summoner. But its really no different from last gen. You had Devil Summoner, Persona, Soul Hackers ect. It's just now we're actually getting them all over here, which is good.

Exactly, it is just like most other RPG franchises. Square enix have released FFX and are going to release FFXII. They did release three mian ones last generation. Naco have done it with the tales of franchise too. This generation we have had Tales of Symphonia, whilst tales of Legendia and Tales of the abyss wwill be released.

WOW that looks great. PS2.5 indeed.

I like the SMT fast combat systems but its nice to get a change once in a while and the premise sounds interesting.

Seeing as how Nocturne and DDS series became sleeper hits and sold well enough I don't see why Atlus wouldn't release this gem here...

Edit: I hope they release the SMT PSP game here too! :D

Im not too sure if change is good. the battle systme in DDS was very quick and done very well. Ive heard that Nocturne's battle system is even better, unfortuantely I have not had the chance of eperiencing it. Both of those battle systems were turn based and both worked very well. Changing a successful and popular battle system could be a bad thing, but i have enough faith in Atlus to produce a new real time batttle system thats as good as the last two games :)

Since we are talking about SMT games here. have atlus announced any plans to develop one for a next generation console? Just imagining SMT with on PS3 with the same syle of graphics is getting me too exited :D

Wait until next gen systems are actually released before asking that. SMT isn't the FF series now. Though look forward to the Soul Hackers Saturn port to the PSP and hope that gets over here.

As far as I know, yes. According to Famitsu release list, Atlus is already working on a SMT game for PlayStation 3. Just check the seach function, there should be a thread about that somewhere.
