You will have to start over if you start playing in (closed) Battle.Net. Your situation is the exact reason Blizz gave for making D3 online only.
My character is only level 18, just at the start of Act 2, so it's by no means a show-stopper - but I'm curious if there's actually a benefit to playing it online in SP mode?

There's no specific SP mode online. What you'd do if you wanted to play online but by yourself would be to make a game and password it so that no one else could join. The benefit is that you'd then have the ability to take that character into regular MP games and play in groups or trade, etc., whereas your SP character is forever stuck in SP.

Good to know, thanks. Not sure I'll take this online at all, but I might start over online just in case.

There's a ladder reset (ladder has some unique high level stuff in it) coming next wednesday. So keep that in mind while deciding. Of course if you don't care about the ladder unique stuff, you don't have to make a ladder character.

I assume ladder characters are MP only?

Yeah. For MP there's Open B.Net (where you can take your offline characters online so this is basically hacked to hell and back with hero-editors) and closed B.Net. Closed B.Net is further divided to ladder and non-ladder.

Sort your priorities out. If you keep playing a video games through any of these and not portal back to town, you're an idiot.

Unless you're playing hardcore - where you should know and understand the risks, and have time budgeted out for it - the worst that could happen is that you die, lose 10% durability and a bit of progress in the dungeon. That shouldn't be a big deal if whatever real life situation is in dire need of attendance.

Otherwise you can just take 15-20 seconds to get out of combat and port back to town. No harm done.

And yes, I was reading through the DRM thread, but it's just not worth responding to. Some people won't be swayed no matter what you say, at least with just text over the internet. I empathize with the detractors, and they have some valid points, but the game is different. It's not just Diablo 2 with a fresh coat of paint. Times change, and what may have worked in 2000 doesn't necessarily work now. The economy was completely broken from early on with Diablo 2 - that cannot be allowed to happen in Diablo 3 with the inclusion of the RMAH for obvious reasons.

And that's all I have to say on the topic for now - I don't want to waste my time writing arguments if they will just be ignored.

Very few if anyone at all. There are less than 100 players playing D3 online as of a few hours ago.

I did some math based on some D3 and SC2 numbers and at AT MOST, the number of people in the beta right now is ~11,000. That's a small number.

Reality is likely much less than that - probably less than half that. Maybe even just in the hundreds still, but probably a bit more.

WTF? Come on Blizzard - when you release this game there are going to be MILLIONS of people trying to access Battle.net. You can release a few more keys if you want to test the stability of the server.

If they haven't sent the public emails out (just press ones) why bother with the announcement so early then. Why not at least state when they are planning to send emails out?

They're not yet in the stress testing phase of the beta. That'll be maybe a month before launch. For now they're squashing bugs and want good information from their testers.

with that mace the barb turns into Barry Bonds and knocks it outta the park.

So have some of you seen that certain downloading protocol websites have attained ways to SOMEWHAT emulate the beta to a playable yet still not even close to perfect point.

I'm actually surprised it happened so soon.

The impact physics is why I like Barb. I have a 25.2dps 2 handed mace I use and everything goes flying. I kill an enemy with bash and he goes flying across the room with a huge splatter of blood. Very satisfying.

One thing bothers me about barb, though: the leap animation. The animation seems to skip 1-2 frames right before he lands. It's like he teleports for the last step of his animation. It's off putting.

Barb and Wizard will be my first two classes. The Monk looks cool but I just can't step away from a dedicated melee or caster type.

Vault can act very similar. Sometimes your character snaps to his final location before actually completing the full vault. Seems to be more prominent when your trying to cast an ability right before the end of the vault.

I'm not, I could see before the beta ends that there will be a client that lets you run around the world with no monsters or so.

The game interface looks so much like WoW I wouldn't be surprised if it was running on a modified Cataclysm engine.

Seriously...?

Amazing, I really need this game before school :(

Cool, thanks again. Have some spare time tonight, I'll check it out.
Well, that went well. I can't login to battle.net with my current account information in Diablo 2 - looks as though the account name (if I try using my email address, my old account name is fine) and password are too long for the fields provided.

I assume this is because of the account merge that happened with WoW some time back, but I've logged a ticket anyway.

I thought D2 still used the original b.net. This should mean that you can just create as many accounts as you like?

Played through the beta and had fun. Currently there's only the first campaign up until the first real boss to play. After that I got a "congratulations, you beat the beta" message. No more quests now, so I've started over on a wizard.

Barbarian was lots of fun. Feels very much like a Fury Warrior on steroids. I'm not completely sure I like the limited choice of skills at any time though.

You need to make diablo 2 specific accounts. It doesn't use your Battle.net info that is used for WoW/SC2.

Oh, I assumed it was all tied to the account that I bought it on. Thanks, both of you. :)

Random properties on set/legenderies? HOLY SHIT.

God damnit. Getting the best gear is going to be friggin' impossible. That bodes well for the AH.

There are tiers of crafting materials - one for every difficulty. So even if they didn't fix Griswold's Edge droprate (though they probably will) - it wouldn't really matter because it wouldn't affect endgame at all, which is the most important part of the game.

So that's neat.

And there is a ton of other stuff to look through - haven't seen it all yet.

Seriously. Randomized sets and legendaries. More space.... Give us more space now, there is no way I wont find a way to fill all my storage slots now.
