Just keeps erroring while downloading and then I lose communication, I figure its just a matter of the severs being hammered.

Yeah, if it's anything like the errors I sometimes get on the WoW-clients, it's definitely the servers being hammered.

are there beta codes being given away or are random people just being given beta access directly in battle.net from blizz?

also, has the mac beta started? are they simultaneous? i remember for starcraft 2 the mac beta came a month later but my friend told me the pc/mac beta clients for diablo 3 were supposed to be closer together.
