Diablo 3 Beta [Beta withdrawal underway!]

I really don't like how the map tells you where to go either, but I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and say that's a beta specific addition. Hopefully the full length game won't hold your hand like that.

Of course it's easy though, its just the beta. I highly doubt the real game is going to be this easy... or at least I hope not.

And I'm soooo in!
EU. Fuck yes!

Thanks stranger for the flag in First week of Jan heh.
Now to complain about the lag once the game downloads.
Finally part of the club!

No invite. Sadness.

What's this about account flagging I keep seeing?

Not a 100% clued in on this, but basically your account gets flagged (not sure if it's by players, or GMs etc). Now there is no visual indication that your account has been flagged btw, you gots to work on faith if someone told you it's been flagged.

Your account is 'Flagged' for the next beta invites that are sent out (or atleast a coming wave).

15GB to download ... guess I'll play on Friday :<

Invisible Walls GameTrailers live show is giving away 500 keys now over the course of the show via at least Twitter, and maybe some other means.

I finally got one. :D

Got into Starcraft 2 in a similar fashion, although I did get an opt-in invite to that one just a week or so later as well...

Just giving the heads up.

And now I can give some non-theoretical feedback.

They're down for maintenance until around 8:30PST. Would be nice to see this fix the current set of bugs the beta is having.

Good to see so many keys from fan/news sites and a wave of keys go out to EU opt-ins. That release date announce should be around the corner.

My Battletag is CarbonFalcon#1838

Was debating whether to do that (which is my XBL name as well) or go with something else. My SC2 handle is different. But I figured for ease of use with GAF people, who I'll probably be playing with most often besides close friends, it's better to keep it straightforward.

Downloading the client took awhile, but I finally got it going and messed around with options and the like. It's late though - I'll play through the beta tomorrow.

What the hell?
nice, europeans had no chance getting one of these, unless your un-employed and sit on the computer all night.

Wowa .. that lag completely destroys the game :<
Can only hope they allow some form of content servers to be hosted by local ISPs or something.

They can probably fix those issues in like a month tops.

I've been in the beta longer than a month now and the problems which were there when I first started playing have not been fixed. I'm not talking about random esoteric features either, the Friends list is fundamental to playing D3 with your friends because of the way creating and joining games is implemented. There aren't small issues which can be fixed in a day, many functions of Battle.net in D3 simply aren't working. At all. Literally. The Friends list doesn't work. At all. The public chat channels do not work. At all. The only way to play D3 with friends right now is to use Steam chat or any other external chat/IM/messaging client to coordinate accidentally landing in the same public chat channel and being able to see each other, which is almost never. Otherwise you can create or join public games and play with random people. That is literally the only way to play multiplayer D3 right now. This game is nowhere near ready to ship, it's barely beta-quality at this point. Blizzard isn't stupid, D3 is their biggest game in years, they won't rush it out. I don't understand the mentality of wanting it RIGHT NOW, because right now it's simply not ready.

"We'll have exciting news to share in the coming weeks regarding Diablo III's release date..."

Fourth paragraph, third sentence in. I'm not speculating. Of course in Blizzard-land "weeks" can mean the sum of months, so we'll see.

So in some unknown number of weeks between 1 and infinity, Blizzard might be telling us when they might be ready for launch? You'll have to excuse me if I don't hold my breath waiting for this announcement, I require oxygen to remain alive.

I love Diablo, but that's also the reason why I'm being so hard on it. I want it to be better than it is.
That's fair. The beta is probably also not the best demo of the game as a whole. Blizzard has also shown that their games evolve heavily over time with patches and expansions, so we'll see plenty of stuff changing over the next couple of years.

Right now I think most people just want to play it.

I have been in the beta in the EU for a few months now, few things:

1. The beta servers are currently all in the US, hence the high ping (I get between 300-900 on avg) but it was better when I first got in than it is now. When the game hits retail they will (I assume) use the many data centres they have for WoW, so France in our case, giving us ping of about 30 like WoW.

2. The lag is currently worse than it's been since I got in, never used to get DC'd but I do now at least once per hour.

3. There is still a chance that the beta will be rolled onto the local servers giving us chance to test them.

As it is, it's primarily a US beta and the game should run as buttery smooth as WoW does by the time retail hits, but then Blizzard have been known to let server / lag issues run for ages as long as it's not hurting their US customers too much so who knows...

The friends list has worked in the past though so has the party system and jumping into new games with friends etc. Obviously there's something wrong with the current patch but those systems have worked perfectly in the past so i see no reason as to why they won't work whenever patch 14 hits. As far as chat channels they were just recently added so i wouldn't say the game isn't close to release as it's quite clear they seem confident in announcing the release date in the coming weeks.

Well it is the first 1/3 of Act 1 on normal. It's not just the beta, Blizzard had said that the beginning will be really really easy.

Ah thanks for some clarification. Assumed the server was hosted in EU. Then again I'm from South Africa and the closest server would be the UK servers heh, so I can't imagine my latency being less than 300 tbh, which completely sucks for me heh.

I really hope we get a chance to test it on a EU server before the game comes out. I really need to see how bad the latency will effect me.

Well the EU severs are in France somewhere for WoW. When I lived in Australia I played WoW on the EU servers and got about 500ms best case, I hear Aussies who play on the US ones get around 300.

Maybe try the WoW free trial on the EU servers and see what you get? I can't see it being massively different. I think it would do Blizzard some good to clarify how they are handling data centres abroad since they chose the terribad route of online only.

In the one day I've had the Diablo 3 Beta, I've played it for more than I've ever played Torchlight, and I've had that game for well over a year. Albeit, I didn't play Torchlight all that much.

King of the genre.

Yeah Torchlight was cool, but just felt like "Dungeon Loot Lite". I would be scared to know how many hours exactly that I've played the beta.

and here's an hour of streamed playing. Monk and DH together, then some alone Monk time.
21 DPS Diabo + Trident Kicks are so good. 38:38 for that.
Well then you obviously haven't played the path of exile beta ;)
While interesting a lot blurs together color wise and the gameplay does not feel as crisp and polished. I find DIII to be a lot more enjoyable to play.

These Path of Exile beta testers just got their D3 beta keys.

I haven't played the d3 beta yet, haha. I figured it would be better, just figured I'd give PoE an honorable mention. For only a dozen young developers, I've found it to be an amazing beta and an improvement over d2 in many ways (most notably the currency system).

I didn't find it amazing, but for a small group of young developers it's very well done and kudos to them. I personally don't find the art comparable nor the gameplay itself. In fact I find the production values in general to be leagues apart. That being said, I can definitely see it filling a void for those D2 players who just aren't happy with D3.

Definitely not art, but gameplay with my speed based melee build, I don't know. I'm using flicker strike matched with cleave and I'm simply having a blast.

Progression in PoE is very well done; from the immense passive skill tree to support gems to altering item mods with rare orbs...its all very well put together. Sure they need to change things (rarity based on the market once its released and a trading system is actually in place for example), but I feel like there are a ton of options.

If the uniques end up being awesome, if they had more monster variability and a couple other things, I think it has serious potential. To beat D3? Probably not.

Edit: sorry to get off topic...Diablo 3 beta and stuff.

vox games just had their last facebook giveaway for keys. They posted a ton and they were all gone within seconds. I tried my best to get one but failed :(

Hazaro, when we were playing earlier and I had massive lag:

Turns out it may not have been my internet connection, but an issue with the Mac client. It seems there's some caching issue which makes everything stutter. There are times when the game is smooth, but it's really pretty bad when it's happening. Even with everything turned to low. It still happened even after I connected via ethernet, and while I don't have a great internet connection at the moment, it's more than passable (5Mb/s Down, ~1Mb/s Up).

I'll probably download the client to my Bootcamp partition and see how it plays there. If it is indeed this caching issue, they've got a pretty major problem to fix (however complicated the solution actually is) before release for Mac players. It's nigh unplayable as is.

What do You mean by production values? Story, characters, lore etc? Most of that stuff still isnt in beta :)

BTW no one cant disagree that PoE beta > D3 beta, full games though is more personal tastes.

Can't tell if serious!

If someone's talking about videogame production values, they're talking about graphics/audio quality. In other words, it looks and sounds like a lot of money was spent producing the game. Lots and lots of polish. For example: Every Blizzard game ever.
