Diablo 3 Beta [Beta withdrawal underway!]

I do not care personally. My main time with the game will be with other GAFfers (hopefully EU gaf will be ACTIVE on this one, unlike with SCII - though I admit, I was part of the problem with that for becoming inactive), and if there will be two+ paralell groups farming stuff, then that is that.

I am too used to WoW's 5 player as a marker now, 4 players is actually way more manageable in terms of being able to instantly recognize whether you need to do something in a situation or something is already on the way from the party. The potential for REAL synergy is really high - and I do not mean stacking auras synergy, but gameplay synergy.

Uhm..they are? O_o EU will be on EU servers, US on US, etc. Or are you somewhere else, planning to play on EU servers?

South Africa :S

Why is it worse? More players aren't always better.

After playing with 4 in the beta, I'm not sure I could tell what was going on on screen if there were more than 4.

I'm more disappointed because of a community and friends aspect. In the game sure we weren't always 8 doing the same shit. Some would do their own thing but we'd still be in the same game and able to talk and have fun.

I can't judge from a gameplay aspect cause I only played the beta alone.

Same here, I only had time to play alone as well before the patch broke the servers. I can't see why that would take away from what I expect from the game. With Diablo I want a focused multiplayer experience - I don't want to hang around while 7 other people run around like headless chickens before they get to where they are supposed to be. If I want to fool around in a big world with friends I play an MMO.

Well the more players, the stronger the mobs. So I doubt you would get far in the harder difficulties without everyone together fighting at the same time. Sounds like a better experience in my opinion. If you wanna be in a group with multiple friends while playing just get together on ventrillo or something while you play.

It sure sounds like there is a lot of teamwork involved to survive in inferno with a full game. It could turn out to be very compelling.

Sounds like something we'll see in 4s Arena

I love the idea, BRING IT ON! (I assume monk auras does not stack - or to be more precise, does not multiply the effect, only strongets stay there. ;)

In the content beyond the gate in a 4-player game, you could easily die if you got ahead of yourself and didn't have backup. I died multiple times due to this. Sort of unknowingly started an event that spawned a bunch of monsters and I got mobbed. What was worse is that they mobbed the waypoint, so you'd die close to instantly if you teleported back there alone.

Again, mobs with no particular special abilities, 4-player, Act 1, Normal. You probably won't be able to go two steps alone in a 4-player Inferno game.

I really shouldn't be playing the beta anymore...

Playing just about fine for me right now.

Not sure if this is a new development (didn't get to play Patch 14 much) but the Cathedral is fucking PACKED with zombies... like zombie rave parties under every chandelier.

Diablodoods, how um... likely is it i can play this on a Macbook pro from 2010?

Yes/No/Fucksake dood?

and for extra loools, a DM1Z ?

I've been dabbling in the beta a bit and I'm finding that most of the complaints that have been leveled against the game are overstated at best. It feels like they streamlined it in all the right ways (no TP scrolls, no identify at all!) and it may not be providing the same sort of experience as Diablo 2 but I think that's just fine. It's offering a different kind of game, a more modern one.

I don't know where it will fall in terms of the other games (Diablo 2 is hard to top) but I'm looking forward to May 15.

Performance has gone to shit for me...I'll see if there's a difference later tonight.
Okay, not just me, then. Severe dip, very choppy framerate, compared to the last patch. They did say there were still some server issues to work through, though. The folks on the beta forum are using this as an example of why we need an offline mode.

how much vram?

2009 15" MBP here with 256MB of VRAM. Game runs fine...on Windows. But it hasn't worked properly at all on OS X yet with this current stuttering bug.

At 1440x900 with textures on high, everything else pretty much low or off, it's 40+ FPS easily.

1920x1080 on an external monitor, same settings, it's more in the 30-40 FPS range with dips.

Interesting, it runs like dogshit on my 13" 2009 MBP. Could give it a shot on windows. Not that it really matters, my PC runs the game alright. Though the 4870 is showing its age.

Just been notified that i've been invited to join the beta.

First time playing a game of this type; any tips? Will i be overwhelmed?

Am i able to play with other people?

What is the chances of it running on a Sandy Bridge onboard graphics? I know I have to update to a real card and I probably will for launch. :D

If you're planning to be upgraded before May 15th, I wouldn't worry about it.

Out of curiosity I turned off Vsync and the engine frame-limiters in the D3 beta. GTX 470 SLI cheerfully gave me 190-200 fps. Sigh. Blizzard really needs to give us higher-res textures and more AA options so I can give my videocards something to do. It would be nice if they implemented DX11 and gave us tessellation to smooth out the low-poly character models too while they're at it.

Not sure what to get just yet but my WoW Playing Machine (PC) will now become a Diablo 3 Playing Machine, so I am not overly bothered about getting cutting edge. Will price up near to the launch.

Nothing to worry about, just install and play. You will probably love it. People seem to have performance issues as of this patch though, so it might not be as enjoyable as it should be.

You can play with other people, could probably check the list for neogaf battletags if interested to get some to play with, not sure how much people play now, I'm on a hiatus until release myself :)

Has anyone tried the beta on a late 2009 iMac 27-inch? Here's the specs:

Core 2 Duo (E7600) 3.06 GHz
Radeon HD 4670 256 MB VRAM
4 GB RAM

This video card is what Blizzard has under their Recommended System Requirements for the Mac, so I was just wondering if the game will play at max with stable fps.

It won't. The game doesn't seem to be very well optimized. It only starts to run fairly well when you turn of AA, shadows and the like. At least, for me it does.

And it's not like there's some kind of super high tech stuff going on that warrants the mediocre performance.

Thought so... might have to set it to medium and deactivate AA or whatever :(

Been running this on my Mac now for quite some time. This patch is the best since 3 patches ago. The stuttering issue in OSX still exists... but it's not as prevalent.

For me, the game has been smoothest in both OSX and Bootcamp (Win7) when I turn shadows off. I think that's the first step I would take when trying to find the settings best for you. Work your way down from there.

It is hard, though, to discern what is actually a performance issue and an issue due to the instability of these servers.

2 patches ago... I was ONLY able to play the game in Bootcamp and in Windowed mode and on lowest settings. I can play full screen on both Bootcamp and OSX with shadow's off, now.

For reference... here are my specs:

OSX 10.7.2
i7 Quad-core - 2.4
8GB RAM
1GB AMD Radeon HD 6770M

Thanks for the replies they do calm my eagerness to QQ out of desperation. I'll be sure to turn shadows off and just play at 720p instead of my native res of 2560x1440.

But damn... if with such amazing specs (for me at least) you still can't play the game at max settings why would Blizzard release such deceiving "recommended" settings? It appears that my specs would make the "minimum" system reqs...

1) You have a huge resolution.
2) You're running it on a mac, which brings performance issues
3) Your GPU is made for laptops, ie weaker than the model number indicates.
