Did EA or Disney make Roblox remove everything related to Star Wars?

Roblox probably isn't very popular here, but my 10 year old son told me this morning that everything related to Star Wars now is gone from Roblox due to copyright , and he was pretty devastated because of it.

Such an asshole move by these companies, as he has literally watched every movie and TV show, and probably spent tusands of dollars in Star Wars Lego and toys because of the Roblox game.

Your 10 year old spent thousands of dollars on Star Wars LEGO sets and toys? Yikes, thats not just a parenting oversight, that's a full blown galactic budget crisis

Literally birthdays and Christmas since he was 5 years old, yes. Some of the biggest Lego ships are 500 dollars alone. But that wasn't my point with this thread.

Probably because the competitor Fortnite is currently having a Star Wars event and Disney has bought shares in Epic.

Assuming this happened over the course of a few years of Christmases and birthdays, that doesn't sound completely insane?

I don't have kids, but I imagine holidays don't come cheap thanks to inflation. Like, if you wanted to get your kid a console and a game for Christmas, that's going to be $500+ right there. So a few hundred bucks on Star Wars shit is probably not that different.

Anyway, OP, I suspect you have Disney to blame. EA doesn't have exclusive game development rights to Star Wars anymore, and, even if they did, I don't think they could enforce SW copyrights.

It's not though. Creators often make money from infringing on IPs in Roblox.

Huch, i had as a kid 2 Lego Toy sets.

Fortnite currently has a huge Star Wars themed season going on, and Epic and Disney are working on a new Disney Universe inside Fortnite (similar to the Lego Fortnite stuff) so it stands to reason that Disney would clamp down on Star Wars content in Fortnite's biggest competitor.

More likely Epic wanted to get Robloxers to Fortnite

On a sidenote - i blocked Roblox in the house. That shit is just one pure scam. Only game I block

Im not sure if anyone here knows. If someone knows, then this place needs to get burned with everything in it.

Real talk, I just googled quick for ya. I found this so looks like it got copyrighted

I know, but it doesn't replace the Roblox gameplay at all for him. Not even close.

So, Roblox generates Billions of dollars annually and can't afford to properly license the Star Wars IP to make even more money? Having a hard time feeling outraged here. You can't be that popular and generate that kind of revenue and expect to infringe on one of the most popular IPs out there…user generated or not.

I have never played it. What makes it a scam?
everything in roblox is free - but it is always based on some number going up. That you can accelerate by buying some shit that usually makes you better, faster, stronger.

also there are myriad of copies of games that are basically clickers or similar that steal copywrighted music or settings freely. Frankly i am shocked star wars or other properties not removed earlier

it is like a big ubi soft made playground for mobile users - but worse. Oh and it looks and plays like SHIT. i mean like the worst game you ever played shit

this is roblox:

Now your kid can spend even more money on IP holder-sanctioned Roblox clone where the IP holder makes 100% of the profits, and not whatever cut they negotiated with Roblox (if any).

I would really question whether the kid needs this type of present, knowing very well this will make them spend hours in front of the TV. In France you can probably sign the kid up for sports classes for a whole year for 500€.

Because it is.

They're making money off an IP without licencing it, surprised it's taken Disney lawyers even this long honestly.

its probably less about them being assholes and more about the recent Story of all the pedos running around on there and Disney doesn't wan't their things being associated.

It's been known about for a decent while now, but I'm sure I just saw a big NBC, Sky or CNN piece or some organisation on all the goings on within Roblox

Copyrights exist to make sure that the one who profits from an IP is its owner and whoever licensed them that IP, and to make sure they can sue those who earn millions with that expensive IP without license.

Normally before getting sued they get a 'friendly' notification asking to take down the unlicensed stuff. Specially when it's a very rich potential partner who could pay to get the license, like many other games do.

There is a Star Wars thing going on in Fortnite now. Epic and Disney would need to reach some kind of agreement for that to happen. Roblox and Fortnite have some overlap in the audience they serve. I would go so far as to say it's Disney's duty to police their IP to ensure the people paying for it aren't doing it for fucking nothing.

almost same with me actually, but that's me, not on the kid... I spent 6 thousand dollars on lego star wars (maybe more), and ended felt angry with star wars and left it years ago...

I'm honestly surprised Roblox hasn't been completely blown the fuck out by copyright infringement stuff at this point.
Many other companies have been stopped, sued, or shuttered for less.

You have probably spent thousands of dollars on games. A lot of people would thank that's insane.
Fair point - tens of thousands. But they're all right over there - on the shelf. I can still play all of them. I get where you're going with this, but I can't fathom doing the same for digital items / microtransactions, especially for my child (wrong lesson IMO). But I can agree that it's all the eye of the beholder in terms of value/correct choice, so we agree there.

Your son is learning a valuable lesson in how powerful copyright holders are

But seriously, every piece of Star Wars anything in Roblox wasn't authorized use of the IP or Star Wars trademark, this is just Disney exercising their rights.

Legos are expensive and they went up 20% or so in 2022. I have a nearly 9 year old and there are several thousands of dollars of Legos he has built, but for him there has only been up to 1k on Star Wars ones. Probably 2k on Nintendo themed Legos. Maybe 3k. Hard to tell because some went to my 6 year old.

I can't see what's wrong with Disney doing that unless its a digital China. Anyway, won't let my son play it. Its basically a chat system with a game attached.
