I need to get back into DDS. I wound up buying it along with a lot of other games, and I played the first 10 or so hours and got "stuck".

Mind you, i did the same with Nocturne, and it turned out to be one of my favorite games of the generation in the end.

I finally picked up this game and am also really enjoying it for all of the reasons you pointed out. It's really well done.

Is there a nice guide for the game available, like Nocturne?

Not really. Double jump passed on the guide because the game was being released in two parts.

I know I always ask this, but here goes: if I don't like traditional RPGs, will I enjoy this one? The few that I've tried just bored me to tears with its pacing, story, and overly complicated battle system (coug * cough * Xenosaga). But this one just looks really cool and I want to give it a shot. Should I?

Yeah that's where a bit of a difficulty slope happens. I believe that's before you fall into a pit where you fight a miniboss in every room you look in. *THAT* gets annoying:P

What's this about DDS having the most difficult optional boss in an rpg?

I haven't gotten around to fighting the optional boss you're referring to because I have yet to play through the game a second time. The boss people are calling "most difficult optional boss ever" is none other than
the protaganist from Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.

PROTIP: Learn the "resist" skills for your characters' weaknesses. If you don't, you can and will be raped later in the game.

Oh man, am I ever loving this game to death. Any advice on how I should power my guys up? Will I be able to use 4 people in a party at once, at some point?

Only leveling up Serph's magic and getting to at least the second last element of all the magic made the back end of the game really easy, if that's any advice to go on...

Great Truth™. And, to clarify for others, not the actively cast ones, but the passive skill itself. After about where Himuro is, that becomes near useless.

That end boss is a BEAST.
Off to hunt the Red key down in that puzzle and run around there to land a few key Mantras to beat it.

I recently bought Nocturne, DDS, and Shadow Hearts 2. I was going to start one of these games soon. But, which one? Argh...

They're all really good, just start them all and keep playing whichever one you like best i guess...although personally I'd go with nocturne.

Yeah, they're all good. I'd say Shadow Hearts 2 as well, because the other two are alike and it's easy to go from one to the other. Unless you think that'd be boring.

Restarted my game, and it just dawned on me how good some of the VAs are. Argilla's voice actress does a great job capturing the fear and doubt that you imagine would be there and Heat's actor is just flat out MEAN:)

Love this game still, I'll make it all the way through this time!

Bump!

Just beat
what's-his-face, leader of the brutes. just barely though, thank god his lower half has so little HP! Pretty damn cool cutscenes before and after.

It's funny, I recognized some voice actors, namely the same guy that does Zhang Fei in DW5 (and Goemon in SW), and i'm pretty sure I can match Heat's to someone in DW5 as well (Pretty sure it's Guan Yu)

Heat is Crispin Freeman, a veteran of the videogame/anime dubbing industry in America.

I beat the game last night. It's a solid title but far from amazing which everyone makes it out to be. Of course, DDS is part one of a two part game so it's to be expected.

I have to find that stupid prince in that theme park house thing. Sometimes the enounter rate gets on my nerves. The story is nice though.

When you fall down the pits in that maze(I'm pretty sure it's 136) there are skeletons in each room that you can talk to, they tell bad Skeleton jokes :D

I'm not a fan of dungeon crawling and what not. I heard that this game had it in spades. Is this true?

Yup it's a SMT game, so it's got some dungeoning to be sure!:) I personally enjoyed the dungeons, thought the save points weren't spread too thin and I never got that feeling of "I'll never be able to make it to the exit" But if you don't like crawling, you will not like this game!

Haven't gotten that far yet, but I imagine it's time to power level?

Either that, or you need to beef up your weakness defenses or something...

Just got killed, keep getting fucking ambushed by Mothmen. WTF? It happens almost every time

It's Lightning that serves them; but Cielo has weakness to status ailments that aren't Death-flagged, so be careful what with their spamming of all-Panic attacks.

Yeah, I slotted in Void Panic and Void Elec to deal with them, they are pretty irritating in numbers though. But they keep ambushing me, meaning I have a to waste all my press turns transforming before I can exploit their weaknesses. Gale is currently in my main party and he's weak to elec in transformed state :/

Just tag him out to Cielo then, (tagging out while ambushed human tags in a demifiend buddy), also, check to see if they're weak to Gunfire. I've noticed alot of aerial-type enemies jump you that are, and I'm not quite sure if they are or not; I keep thinking they are.

i just got the game and i have to say so far it's awesome. i have only played for about 2 hours, but i like everything about the game. nice graphics, above average voice acting, interesting storyline and a combat system i'm enjoying.

i have a quick question: i just got the "devour" ability, does it do anything special? i have used it on people but it seems like it is just a sword slash of sorts that takes away damage as a regular move would. should i use it when the opponents health is low, and then i can eat him?

not a big deal, just wondering

Use the 'hunt' type attacks(devour et al.) when enemies are in fear mode(little bubbles over their heads) and you get huge post-battle bonuses. Usually enemies go into fear when you use a skill or spell that they are weak to. But yea, hunting is a big part of the combat and you should get into the habit of doing it often. Only the person that devours the enemy reaps the experience awards.

At first it's wise to have everyone learn at least the basic devour skill for that reason, but once you get some of the crazier upgardes and an AP share equipped later in the game, you only need one party member assigned to hunt duties. Again, only really use it when an enemy is feared.

You can also inflict fear if you void up an attack they then use on you (void, repel, drain).

The hunt skills can work on enemies that aren't frightened, but it's a much lower success rate.

Alright, I'm in the Citadel and I'm getting my ass handed to me by enemies that are inflicting nasty status ailments such as poison, stun, and mute... CONSTANTLY. Is there a trick to curing or, even better, voiding these that I'm missing? Help. Please. :(

Mick was pretty tough. I almost didn't beat him the first time. Luckily his lower half has low HP and his upper half is cake once it's alone.

fellas i came across a peculiar enemy at the maribels base. i was heading towards that crab boss, and i got caught in a random battle. then it was this fish thing (i think) and he said at the beginning of the match "did you think i'd let you steal my treasure?" or something like that. then i tried to fight him and i could only do 1 HP damage. who the F was this and what would i have gotten for beating him? and how could i have beaten him?

also, why does the "analyze" magic spell suck so much balls from this chick? i try to analyze people and it just shows a bunch of "?" on every section. what good is this then? can i upgrade it?

The weird fish is Omoikane, and you really have no hope of killing it until way later, essentially the "cactuar" of DDS. He appears now and again throughout the game, but anything outside of guns do meager damage to him, and he likes to run away. To take it down you will need some seriously powerful bullet types and some serious luck. You are rewarded quite well for killing one, but pretty much don't stress dealing with him until much much later.

Analyze should work ok, I used it constantly to figure out enemy weaknesses. Sometimes the game is kinda weird and won't let you properly analyze until you kill an enemy once, othertimes it doesn't. Bosses can never be analyzed. Eventually you can buy an item to analyze(freeing up the skill slot), but there is no upgrade.

damn how do i beat
jihana
? she is a real bitch and keeps summoning buddies to help her. i beat the F out of her for about 5 turns, and then all my time is spent curing status ailments or healing my guys. i seem to take hundreds and hundreds of HP away from her but she won't die. my guys are on level 18, 19 and 20. is there something she is weak against or something i should have in my arsenal?

Void Expel, that's it.

The big attacks she does, and especially the STUPIDLY POWERFUL combo attack are all Expel, so if you just have one character Void every turn, you can just pound her face in. Concentrate on her, ignore the Unicorns because they mainly cast Expel attacks. Before I started using Voids, I was totally demolished quite a few times by her.

OK, I just finished the Destiny Land themepark. Used the yellow key to access the Nigi Mitama Field Hunt there, and now all FIVE of my guys have mastered their most recent Mantras. Aside from the newly joined Cielo, who only costs 1000 Macca to learn all those dinky Mantras he's missing, I cannot afford ANY new Mantras for my guys. So... how do I get cash?

I have no more Cells, and I know to sell them when the Solar Noise is at Max ('cept for the Jack Cell, which needs to go when the SN is at Min.) I've got nothing to sell and no Macca. Where can I earn some... quickly.

I know that ending fights early by exploiting weakness is a great way to earn bonus Macca when fighting... and yet...?

Edit - Also, how do I open the chest in the middle of Coordinate 136's lobby? The one guarded by those Pyro Jacks?

Alright. Figured it out. Top levels of Destiny Land, you can get a good 1000-3500k per fight if you exploit weaknesses, even with a crew at level 40+. Also, some of the tougher guys (like that Deity-type bitch who berserks everyone if you aren't careful) can fairly commonly drop Quantum Cells, which sell for 18000 on max Solar Noise, IIRC. Someone also dropped me a Code Cell, which goes for 9600 on max, I think.

Not bad.

You should be able to make tidy money just cleaning monsters as efficiently as possible as you go throughout. Then again, I didn't do my mantra leveling until late.

The bonus dungeons are by far the best source for Macca and AP. One particularly is in a sewer(forget the name unfortunately) where you occasionally fight two giant floating idols that look straight out of an Indiana Jones adventure. They are weak to ice and pretty easy to kill once frozen. Easy 50-100k Macca per fight.
