Digital Devil Saga is amazing

i've run into a major problem.


i'm on that ship in the desert (where you're supposed to plant 8 or 9 bombs or whatever to blowup the enemies). the problem is i'm already to the "end" of the level, and apparently i missed 1 bomb placement. wtf! how do i know which floor it was on? surely i don't have to go floor by floor and see where i missed do i? damn that's going to piss me off
 
is there a way i can look at the entire map? i can't find that option (if it's there). i can only see where i have/haven't gone within a small vicinity... which is worthless because i would still have to run around everywhere looking for where i didn't go
 
If you press a direction, the map will scroll in that direction. L1 and R1 will allow you to go up or down a floor.
 
if i press in a direction on what screen? pressing a direction moves my character, pressing L1 or R1 rotates the camera left or right. is there a map screen i'm not aware of? i tried pushing start, select, looking at the menus... i see nothing mentioned of a map. the only map i have is in the lower right hand corner, but like i said it will only show a small area of where i'm currently at
 
Anyone have any idea how many HP Beelzebub (behind red gate in Vanguard Base) has? Seems to be immune to most of my magic...
 
does anyone know a good strategy to beat this bat guy a 3rd time? it's after you place all the bombs on the ship, and he is a BITCH now. he always turns me into a small bat (what spell will help me resist that magic??) and then just rapes my whole crew. how can i beat him? i know to have earth magic for when he blocks, but other than that i'm getting killed
 
I think I killed him in 5 or 6 turns, he only turned 2 of folks into bats, and one had worn off before the fight ended. Actually, I think it was a batted Serph, casting Terazi, that ended the fight.

My brother said that anti-Expel spells might help you with the third bat fight, but I beat him without, so I cannot verify his claim. (He beat Bat without either, just a suggestion he gave me since he got there a day before me.)

Uhhh, just have 2 or 3 of your guys with Terazi, and you should be able to nail him quite easily. My Argilla was doing roughly 250 with an Earth Boosted Terazi, and by having all of your crew with that spell, you can get like 6 attacks per turn if you time it right. Once he starts flying, I think I just used regular physical attacks, but I'm sure there is a better option.
 
thanks for your help, that is exactly what i had to do is level up the 3 members with earth skills cause i had none. but i also used the anti-force skill and that helped a lot. if he turns you into a bat and uses winds of hell, you die. i finally beat him... how much further until i beat the game? (if you've beaten it)

can't wait for part 2
 
I haven't beaten it yet, so I'm not sure.

I've got about 40 hours clocked, IIRC, and just entered the Solids' base. My guys are in the process of breaking the level 60 mark (Serph already has, IIRC.)

I'd say you've still got a bit to go, however, I did spend quite some time leveling up my Mantras vigorously.

Gratz on killing Bat. Was waiting the whole game for him to finally die. What a tool, he was. Hahahah.
 
Alright, so in Embryon Base 1, deep down, there are 3 yellow "chests" that I cannot reach, and 1 door that can't be opened from this side. I just beat Varin in Ajna Base, and walking out, noticed that right above the door (on the hill) that leads to the main base dungeon, there is another door, and a yellow chest, one level up. I am pretty sure I have fully explored all 4 forms of the base itself, except for the area where I fought Varin, in the white version of the base, where there is another door that cannot be opened from this side.

Any ideas? I'm annoyed. I must be getting near the end of the game at this point, and I have all 3 color keys. While it is possible that I missed an area in the confusing Anja base, I'm pretty sure that I have not missed anything in my own base.
 
Yea, you gain access to those chests in your base after killing one of the optional bosses. I can't recall which one.
 
Beezlebub is a bitch, particularly his second form. A general strategy against him and many of the optional bosses is to suit up someone like Heat with Min/Max critical skills, and whatever physical defense and offensive skills that make him a hard-hitting sumvabitch. The other members pretty much focus on healing/buffing, that is unless there is a gimmick strategy/weakness you know about. Most of the crazier secret bosses are all about going physical though, or at least it was a strategy that worked well for me.

I'll keep that in mind, thanks. Right now, Heat is my uber-hunter, but he has been focusing on almost pure physical now that I've taught him all of the hunting skills. I would like to teach everyone all Mantras before finishing the game, however...
 
No need, I mean that's really unnecessary to beat all the optional bosses, shouldn't you be playing DQ4? :)

If you must, I would recommend leveling up in one of the secret dungeons(sewers). There is an enemy that looks like some MASSIVE floating idol from an Indiana Jones movie. They come in pairs, are weak to ice and give crazy rewards for killing them.
 
I'm stuck at a boss...no matter how much I prepare I just can't pull it off.
It's the fucker with the long neck that casts stone gaze then immdiately attacks, for instant kill. I've got fire magic (which he's weak to) and void earth for all my guys, but I just can't beat him, eventually he gets lucky and does that stupid thing that gives him 5 turns then kills my guys one by one. Why the fuck isn't there a Void Stone??
 
How do I access these secret dungeons? I'm in the Karma Temple now... uh... in a place that looks like a big sewer, fighting this crazy 6-armed serpent bitch boss thing. Heh.

DQ4 is more when I'm commuting, but I'll probably play that when I go to bed too.

Catoblepas? He's the first boss of Afna base, I think. I didn't have a hard time with him at all. He only killed one of my guys with that (not my healer, so I rezzed him ASAP), and his Stone Gaze mostly failed. I went all out offensive, and didn't bother with any defensive or counter buffs at all. What levels are your guys?
 
Close to 50, I think. His stone gaze works on my guys about 85-90% of the time, hence why i'm having trouble. What can I do to reduce the chance if it working?
 
DDS is KIND of like a traditional RPG. you can roam around, there are different "towns". there is no overworld map or anything, you just transfer from town to town pretty much. it is a turn-based RPG, but of course there are a few twists thrown into the combat to keep it fresh.

it is, to me, the best rpg i've played in the past 3 years.









and by best RPG i mean only (but seriously it's awesome)
 
Ahh Mox. My guys were between 59-61 when I wiped out Catoblepas.

Ahhh, no towns, but there are vendors. Mostly dungeons. Lots and lots of dungeons and character building. One of the best turn based combat engines ever, too. Highly addicting game, interesting story, and awesome dungeons.
 
What do red numbers in combat mean? I know they don't have to do with critical attacks or weaknesses. Does it mean an enemy is about to die, when the damage number flashes red?

so its more like a lord of the rings-ish style RPG? or like baldurs gate-settings ish?
 
Neither. There are safe areas (which may or may not contain save spots and vendors) where you can talk to npcs, but there are no real towns. You do choose the locations you visit from an overworld map. That that many locations to choose from, though it's by no means a short game. DDS is mostly dungeon treking and combat. Those are what the game focuses on, and those are the categories the game excels in.

And never mentioned LotR again, if you mean the Third Age. What a piece of shit, broken game that was. :)
 
sounds like i wouldnt like it :lol oh well. i was so close to buying it from all the praise too...i just hate dungeoun crawling and whatnot

To clarify, it isn't dungeon crawling in the roguelike or random dungeon bullshit sense. They're actually very well designed, with some really neat concepts in place. But true, if you don't like exploring dungeons, the this game is not for you, IMHO.
 
Just finished it the other night.
The Karma Temple was a bitch and a half to get through (tough random encoutners; frustrating floor/wall puzzles), but man was it worth my while. The final boss was simply awesome! The anti-climatic ending was a bit of a bummer, as I thought the story was just hitting it's straps, but thankfully DDS 2 is only some 2 months away. Can't wait!

Along with Nocturne, SMT has easily been my favourite RPG series this gen. :)

Stone gaze is a death spell and Void death will counteract it. Also the higher your luck is the less chance of it hitting you.

Yeah, red numbers mean they're low on hp (which is a good time to use a hunt skill to finish them off). I forget if it's 10% or 25% or what..
 
Man, that would have been good to know 2 dozen hours ago, or so. Thanks for the confirmation.

I imagine I'm about halfway through the Karma Temple so far. Not too tough, and OODLES of Atma and Macca. Next time I hit a Greater Terminal, I'm so ditching out to sell all these cells enemies have been dropping, I need to save up for some of the uber Mantras.

My guys are approaching level 65 now, perhaps a bit overpowered, but it's all good. :)

Now, what's this about hidden dungeons?

Oh, and if the last boss music is the song I think it is from the OST, it'll be fucking amazing.
 
Good lord.

Well, I'm really anal about my exploration. I won't leave an area until I'm convinced I got everything. Also, at select points in the game, I grinded areas for Mantras...
 
does anyone know of a good website with detailed strategies/pictures of the monsters and stuff? i'm am having a hell of a time after beating lupa because new creatures keep popping up that just rape my party. im all for finding out on my own but man it sucks getting like an hour through the dungeon and being killed by a bum random encounter cause i dont know whats weak against the enemy
 
I have a question: What makes this game so uhh... mature? I've been waiting for an adult RPG for quite some time but I don't usually like games with cheap nudity or buckets of blood and guts for the shake of it.
 
well this game isn't over the top with it's "maturity". it touches on delicate issues such as the existence of god, many religious issues and murder. there is also cussing here and there as well as some bloody scenes. it's no GTA or anything, but it is a nice "mature" rpg
 
The last boss is cake. There strategy to beat him takes a turn or two to start up but you basically bitchslap his ass for the rest of the time if you setup in the prior battle.
 
I got kinda pwned the first time I tried to take out the last boss too. Obviously, I wasn't prepared. But man, did I go down to some of the best last boss music ever...
 
As a shin megami tensei veteran. Right now i feel the game is good. I don't think the theme is as good as any of the PSX personas yet. The dungeons still need work.. and the story needs to progress in a more efficient way.
 
Is there ANY decent way to make a shit-ton of cash in this game? The Titanias x3, even wiped out in one round, only give me like 33k... and that's NOTHING compared to what I need in order to max out everyone's Mantras. Lame... I never imagined that Macca would be the hardest thing to find... not APs.
 
Is there a way to nullify being turned into stone? Or atleast CURING it?

If you look over the thread, I was stuck at this exact same spot, asked for help here, and someone helped me. Void Death stops Stone Gaze.
 
Hmmm... that's not a bad idea... I think you can find lots of High Pixies in the lowest levels of the final dungeon. I'll give that a try. Thanks.
 
High levels also help. I think I was in my low to mid 60s when I fought the boss version of Catoblepas, and despite MANY attempts, he only managed to stone one of my guys.
 
Just get to the last dungeon. If you kill mobs towards the end of the tower in one or two rounds, they'll be plopping 50k a piece if not a little more.
