Digital Foundry: Cronos: The New Dawn PC - DF Review - Plus: 113% Perf Boosts Via Optimised Settings

it's a good looking game if you look at it in screenshots. when you actually play it it doesn't... which is true for most UE5 games.

Lumen is simply so unstable and low fidelity that you are constantly seeing artifacts the moment anything moves, sometimes even when standing completely still.
the first time I got to the first save spot, I literally Alt F4ed the game, and looked for ini tweaks that fix the shitty lumen GI.
it legit looked broken. not even low fidelity, just broken. and that's with settings higher than the console... it's with hardware lumen

Can Ray Reconstruction be forced? This game reminds me of fort solis when it comes to unstable lumen.

I don't think so.
but there are tweaks that increase how much it accumulates, which results in less shimmering and boiling, but does somewhat make it look less responsive to sudden changes.

Yeah, they probably had to find balance between accuracy and "lumen ghosting".

Looks like they should have go with RTGI different than HS/SW lumen like the finals or bake the lighting (probably didn't have time for that).

the RTX branch of UE5 seems to be the only way to get decent real time GI on UE5 currently. RTX GI is faster and stable looking.

Most of SH2's budget went to graphics and animations since it's a remake of an existing game. This is a new game from the ground up with a mid-tier budget that also went to level design, writing, pre-production, and more. SH2 was backed by Konami, a multi-billion dollar company. This is produced and published by Bloober.

Not exactly a fair comparison.
The problem is expectations are now much higher after SH2R and Cronos did not deliver. Hopefully SH1R would get them back on track but it does seem that without some backing and with original material they just aint got what it takes just like with their previous mediocre games

Holy hyperbole, Batman!

I noticed 1 or 2 stutters that I assumed it was traversal. It's not like Gotham Knights on launch...
yeah yeah, but 99% of UE5 games has some issues with stutter and bad performance. also Lumen isn't that great either, thats why i think Decima is the best game engine in the market right now, if they update the engine to support ray tracing it ll became a beast.

But 77MC is not mediocre, it's "good".

Outside of overhyped games from Sony/MS/Nintendo and few franchises (FS games, Monster Hunter etc.) reviews tend to use full scale like they should be.

Bad games:

Decima did nothing with RT and "nanite" so far.

I know how MC works. I however don't like it at all and agree with the 40 score at the bottom there. Played it for like almost 2 hours and its just bad. Worse than S2R on every metric. This made me just reinstall Dead Space Remake.
Average graphics, static environments, boring monster design (the merging is the only gimmick and if you are careful it will never come to that), mediocre story, a protagonist that may as well be a prop, repetitive objectives, mind-numbingly uninteresting COVID story and I can go on and on

Mafia had a lower score yet I enjoyed it far more. Its amazing how some scores are just so out of whack for me. Like I fully agree on KCD, LSA, Clair Obscure, Death Stranding 2 maybe not so much but still ok. I also think Hell is Us is a far better game.

How can you know story after 2 hours? Same is true for objectives.

Story reminds me of 12 monkeys movie... Not some fucking covid story.
