Digital Foundry: Final Fantasy 15 PS4 vs PS4 Pro Gameplay Frame-Rate Test

I really hope the future patches fix the framepacing on HQ pro.. because i do not expect a consistent 60 fps throughout in lite mode and if HQ still has this issue ill be left without a solid performing option.

I don't wanna watch the video because I've been avoiding all I can about the game until I can play it at it's best, but waiting is hard.

Can someone who has the Pro version give me an impression of how bad the frame pacing issues actually are? Are they better or worse than Bloodborne?

I can't even see the issue, I mean I see it in the graphs and stats but with my eyes I just don't see it.

I'm not saying it doesnt exist or bother people, I'm just amazed that I don't see it at all. This is the first one of these frame pacing comparison videos I've seen and had always wondered about what people were on about when complaining about bloodborne.

I really hope Square doesn't give up now, not when they've come so close and fix it with a patch.

I don't understand why developers go to great lengths to achieve a stable framerate but undo all of it up with improper framepacing. I mean we know how choppy the framerate used to be in this game and yet they've somehow managed to get it up to stable 30 in even the high node but there is no point in that if the end result still ends up being choppy due to improper framepacing.

god damn it, Square Enix. Really disappointing to hear this.

While I don't really notice to much in Blood borne, it's really noticeable on the video here. I wonder what's causing it. Possibly released just a tad early?

Judgement demo has no issue in Light mode, nor the final game, so... maybe?
No..it did.
Much in the same way it exists in Lite mode right now.

The thing to note is that Xbox version of Judgement demo had zero frame pacing issues and while we are mentioning platinum demo as an example to show that it won't improve, it's worth noting that platinum demo dropped framerate everywhere on top of improper framepacing while Judgement and final game doesn't.

So there's hope

Looking at the "high" settings side of the ps4pro footage is like watching a hand cranked film from the 1910s. God damn.

Please fix this Square.

Pretty close on Pro HQ mode IMO.

Is it possible to see the issue in that video, or is there something inherent in recording/encoding that makes it impossible to see?

Because I don't see it. I hope that means I'm just not sensitive to the issue!

Edit: just seen the gamersyde link. Going to check that.

Edit 2: Nope. Don't see it. Guess I'm lucky.

Seems to be inherent to the engine. It's been an issue from the start of development. I don't think it will ever be patched.

While I notice frame pacing, it's so prevalent in consoles, and very noticeable in certain PC titles. It just doesn't bother me anymore.

It is evident in both videos. If you can't see it, well, congratulations! You're not sensitive to it! :P

Maybe it's just me but this seems like one of the most hyperbolic comments I have ever seen on gaf.

I just watched the first few minutes of the footage and couldn't really notice any difference between the two with regards to framepacing. Maybe some people are more susceptible to it than others but to say what you said seems ridiculous.

Maybe the xbox version is the one to get?
I know it runs at 900p but i think thats better than 1080p with bad frame pacing.

I think the first time frame pacing really messed up a game for me was metro on the PC using an R9 290. I couldn't understand why the frame rate was stable around 29-30 fps yet the image kept stuttering and aiming was difficult until I did some research and found out it was due to terrible frame pacing. It is really bad in FF XV though that's clear

Framerate or framepacing issues in a FPS directly make the game unplayable.

I consider myself lucky reading the thread. Looked at the comparison video (on my phone) and could see nothing wrong.

Looking forward to playing tonight

the frame pacing is not a dealbreaker for me like it is for a lot of people, but yeah it's disappointing and I hope they patch it. Thankfully people are being rather loud about it (at least on GAF) so maybe it will help to bring more awareness to frame pacing since it's only in recent years where I've heard people actually bring these sorts of issues up. Publishers need to know people care about these things to take it more seriously.

That said I just want to say, I grew up playing games from NES, all through N64, PS1, PS2, etc... bad framerates and pacing issues are by no means new to my eyes... i've dealt with it so often and for so long that I can be forgiving. I still want it to be taken seriously, but by no means is it going to stop me from enjoying an otherwise good game. I don't play FPS or ultra fast-paced games often so it doesn't impact the gameplay much in my uses.

The frame pacing is quite unfortunate, but the image quality boost is going to be incredible!
I can't wait to get my PS4 Pro to play this game!

I kept switching between high and lite mode last night and the frame pacing was bothering me enough to decide to stick with lite mode.

I didn't actually realise it was a pacing issue and assumed it was dropping frames.

Reading the previous posts in this thread makes me wonder if it's spacial awareness related. For example if I focus on a single point then the frame pacing "appears" less pronounced. But when my focus is wider (e.g. the car driving in relation to both the road and the mountains in the background) then the stuttering is very pronounced. In the cutscene (where Noctis is on the phone) it is very pronounced even without a wide focus as his arm stutters as it is shown moving across his coat.

I just watched all the linked videos in this thread about frame pacing and couldn't see anything wrong. At all. I also managed to play Bloodborne just fine. Poor frame rates I can see clearly.

Try to look at the overall scene, follow the mountains with your gaze while the character is moving about, then look over to the other side and it will be consistently smoothly updated rather than juddery.

Yep. The demo was gorgeous. Can't wait to see more in the full game.
And hopefully they patch it with the further Pro update, though I'm not sure yet if I'll notice it.
