Digital Foundry : Grand Theft Auto 6 Trailer 2 Tech Breakdown - Incredible Realism, Impressive RT, Astonishing Detail

tbh there were so many people who said that 30fps is unplayable and that 60fps is the new standard for consoles, but now they are turning a blind eye to GTA VI at 30fps
It's not unplayable, just not preferable. It's also that most games don't have visuals or tech that would justify a 30 FPS lock. This is one of the few games that does as it looks almost a generation ahead of many other modern games.

I guess it depends on what the game offers in return. If a lot, people will get used to it, as they always did.

It is a shit resolution even for DLSS. Combine that with 30fps shit show...

Looks like DF agree with me that the mirrors in that in car view scene are most likely RT reflections because the other car shows up in the reflection so quickly, it being out of frame and it being a dynamic object points towards RT.

Maybe a super fast render to texture, but im still betting on it being RT.

The game is almost certainly going to be 30fps on console.

Doesnt really matter to me cuz im going to be waiting for the PC version.

Yeah noticed that. Still not convinced though. With RT, even with a simplified BVH, object distance would be accurate. A single wheel taking up the whole mirror in the shot I pointed out, or even the momentary flash of the lady's dress look way too zoomed in, so I'm still going to guess it's render to texture, until there's more footage. There are other clear examples of RT reflections though, so it's certainly there throughout the game. I think they are being smart and selective about what is done on which surface, including SSR fallbacks. It's the only way all this is going to be feasible on base console hardware, given its relatively weak RT performance. They've already blown away all my expectations for this generation, so I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

Are we going to be pedantic?

Once again, never paid full price for any PS4 game, ever. When the PS4 launched, Best Buy had GCU, which you could got 2+ years for free when you purchased a $5 prepaid phone card. That was 20%+ off all new games. Thus, games were only $44-$48 instead of $60. You also got rewards points for BB for purchases which converted into rewards coupons $5, $10, $20, etc..

Then you buy the game with the Sony credit card, which gives 5X the points for Sony Electronics or PlayStation purchases. Those points convert very well into PSN currency or physical games in their catalog.

They also had a rewards program tied to it where you get tons of points for unlocking achievements/trophies in games you play. Those were repeatable. Like quests. All those points added up to even more money off for just playing games and doing this you would normally do anyhow. No stress.

They stopped that program because it was insanely easy money and they had to be losing a ton. But now they have their Stars program, which again, gives you points for things you buy, on top of the Sony card points you are using, on top of getting points for just playing games.

All this adds up to where I never payed full price for a game in over 10 years. I've always paid 50% of less for new games (on average), etc.. They have the same sales on games as Steam and the like does, then there's the physical market for consoles that have even deeper sales or second hand.

Once again, the "PC is always cheaper" is an old and tired argument for the past decade. Even the humble bundles and Steam sales are not what they used to be 10+ years ago.
God what horrible bullshit....
"Yeah, I get %off of certain items if I invest half my lifetime and a small fortune beforehand, do programs that don't exist anymore and dance naked under the moonlight at a specific time"

Meanwhile on pc: navigate to shop, click... You just saved 20-30 bucks and you get free online.

Yea Right GIF

Since GTA6 is not coming out on consoles and pc at the same time, some are trying to push the narrative that the console version will be pointless due to hardware limitations. I guess that's a way to cope, but

... I'm not planning on picking this up until circa 2030, probably on CDKeys for a tenner. Not really a fan of GTA.

What's oof about 1152p, a resolution that will likely be upscaled in any case? The image shown thus far looks pin sharp. You won't be counting the individual pixels onscreen come this game's release, and I also doubt a 60 fps mode will be included; Rockstar never do so for console, as they're trying to maximize fidelity.
They should have been more clear to prevent erroneous takes. It's 1152p at the ultrawide trailer, but considering the full 16x9 image, it's a standard 1440p.

They could be clever about it.
In car view turn on RT reflections for player car.
In third person use fallback.

Cutscenes they can mix and match however they want.

Why are you the way that you are in every thread?
It's just his opinion, I don't know why you guys are so upset.

It's not unplayable, just not preferable. It's also that most games don't have visuals or tech that would justify a 30 FPS lock. This is one of the few games that does as it looks almost a generation ahead of many other modern games.

30 fps may be justifiable, for those who can't stand 30fps or have an OLED TV it's horrible, so it's a legitimate complaint from some here.

You can even justify it by the visuals, but take a look at the comments about this game being released at 30fps, despite being one of the most visually impressive of the generation... most are criticizing the 30fps:

It's at least very funny how many who criticized 30fps are now defending it and tasting their own medicine lol

Oliver says '20:9' for the aspect ratio in the trailer (2560*1152), but this is basically 2.21:1 save for a few pixels; which interestingly is the standard for 5-Perf 65mm.

Not a common choice for presenting things like this, where they'd usually go for 2.35-2.40:1. Always preferred 2.20/2.21:1, gives a little more headroom and a greater sense of scale while still maintaining a wide, cinematic look.

Why is a 60fps mode even being talked about still?
It's not even the GPU, it's the CPU. Even Rockstar's magic engineering can't make that miracle happen.
Dozens of npcs, vehicles and animals on screen, all the dynamic AI scripting + euphoria physics + all the ray-tracing goodies and such.
Even 30fps would be hard to believe if it wasn't a Rockstar game.

If they manage to squeeze more than 30fps from those consoles then perhaps some kind of investigation should be opened because I'm sure they're making blood sacrifices to the tech gods.

They are ruling out a 60fps due to open world, even if we have open worlds at 60, and RTGI, even if we have a console with 3X the RT power of a PS5.

Which open worlds feature the amount of npcs cars and insanely detailed world with interactivity?

You said it is "a little blurry"

this is a high-end game with the highest production values ever. It's running on a fixed piece of hardware. It's annoying to see people whine about numbers without a finished game and with no context. Just yesterday everyone was raving about how good it looked and Rockstar said it's captured off a Ps5. But today because DF came down from the mountain with a proclamation of the pixel counts the whining starts. I really don't understand what people want and expect and why the DF pixel count matters so much.
Exhibit #4080 on why DF sucks and has contributed to making gaming discourse worse.

It all depends on the CPU and memory.
If the CPU and RAM are already operating at full capacity then you could have a GPU with 50x the RT power and you still wouldn't get anywhere near 60fps.

Has anyone been able to go through and figure out which segments were "Gameplay"?
First entering the home, Bench pressing, Driving, Heist, Lucia jumping from the window, Jason's drive by, jason throws goon against car, Lucia's fightscene, car explosion, jetski riding, motorcycle driving, driving over the bridge at the end.

Beginning of the end when IGN bought out DF. Do we need a DF video for everything now? I know I don't need a DF video to tell me the graphics in the GTA VI trailer looked good. (I still don't believe it will look that good on consoles, though. I'm calling PC bullshots.)

30fps disappointing but at least Rockstar does 30fps right, at least from what I remember (proper motion blur).

30fps is totally expected, because they are pushing consoles to their absolute limits. The game looks absolutely insane, even with the IQ issues they pointed out. This level of fidelity, the sheer density of detail is something we only dreamed of at the start of this generation. R* are fucking BEASTS

Hold the fuck up. Saying it's all in-game is one thing, but Rockstar straight up said the trailer is comprised of EQUAL parts cinematics and gameplay. EQUAL.

There's 80 seconds of gameplay in Trailer 2? Holy shit.

The part where DF talk about some shadows probably not showing up when Jason robs that store. Bruh, nobody is going to even notice that while playing it. Or do people truly sit in front of their TV with a magnifying glass or something? This truly is the kind of stuff I can't care about at all.

Yea digital foundry isn't for you then, I find that stuff interesting.

I agree it's shit criticism, and most gamers don't notice that stuff - but some do, which is why DF is still somehow relevant I suppose.

That sounded way more shady than I intended (see what I did there).
