Digital Foundry: Grand Theft Auto The Trilogy: Definitive Edition Improved - Is It Actually Definitive Now?

GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition has received a wealth of changes and upgrades courtesy of developers old and new. Classic Lighting from the mobile versions is now available on consoles, so we had to take another look at the game. Has performance improved? What's the score with the myriad bugs? What about the AI upscaled artwork? Are we actually any closer to a properly 'definitive' edition?

I platinumed GTA:SA a few weeks ago and had a great experience with the performance. Looked like a touched-up PS2 game but it was a worthwhile walk down memory lane.

Seems like a huge improvement overall, and has reached the point of being good enough to earn the "Definitive" moniker.

3* years since this release of the 'definitive' editions of PS2 games.

I’m probably sticking with my modded PC version.

I didn’t realize a different developer took over for Grove Street games (5:10 in the video). That whole “dev comments” in the code situation really pissed off Rockstar lol.

They still look like an Unity asset flip, the lightning and fire effects look very out of place. The Netflix/Android versions are an improvement if you don't mind playing on a mobile, but the cut soundtracks means the original Xbox/PC versions will be better.

Gameplay-wise, you do have a minimap and mission checkpoints which are good QOL features.

I saw this trend on youtube and twitter where people are saying that the game is fixed now and this is not true at all. The game still has plenty of bug and issues that only god knows if they will fix it in the future or not.

This is not a definitive version, the games are still looking bad, specially the character models

The only definitive version of SA for me is the original on PS2
I'm of two minds on this.

I honestly want to like the PS2 originals over anything new, but from a gameplay standpoint the Definitive Editions are much easier to play and I would say more enjoyable to play due to modern controls.

However from a graphical standpoint, character models, etc the old versions are 100% better. They just look "off".

Originals on a CRT > Definitive Edition = PS4 ports > Originals on modern display

I bought this because it was $22 on Xbox during Black Friday sale and the patch just had come out. So far I have only played gta3 and really been enjoying my time with it. The 60 fps performance mode is a big game changer for me personally.

Just hooked my extra PS5 up to a 1980's CRT. I may try the definitive editions on there. Could be really cool.

Will it take you 3 years to do the write up?
Dont get lazy

Not much to write up. They just band-aided a disappointing 'remaster'.

No changes in specs, the only difference is the 'new' lighting which tries to emulate the original PS2 lighting, but still isn't exactly 1 : 1.

They fixed the frame pacing issue in the 30FPS mode.

60FPS mode is 99.9% locked with only a few minor single digit drops when using the tank, Series consoles do single digit drops a bit more than PS5. PS5 Pro runs without any drops even with a tank.

Well that’s what the DF video said. The game today is probably in a “minimally viable” state, the absolute lowest level it could possibly be to be somewhat acceptable. If it launched in this state it would probably have been considered okay. But that’s hardly definitive and it’s also unacceptable for three years post release. But it’s also why rockstar hyped this up and got their simps online to shill it. I wouldn’t expect a lot more work.

Moded PC version (project reborn mod pack) is the best version. This mod pack adds missing effects from PS2 and higher quality assets from the xbox (gta 3 and VC were basically remasters with higher quality assets and lighting even compared to PC version) for all three GTA games and packs a lot of improvements on top of that (for example it adds perfect gamepad support).

Moded original vs definitive edition

100%. Modded PC is the truly definitive way to go on PC if you have access to them. Graphics aside, you also get full soundtracks - something hugely important to VC in particular.
