Digital Foundry Hands On: Hogwarts Legacy on Switch 2 Lacks the Current Gen Wow Factor.

Digital Foundry recently got hands on with the Switch 2 version of Hogwarts Legacy during a Nintendo preview event, and they weren't impressed. Performance is locked to 30fps with some drops in intensive areas, and the game seems to be lacking the additional visual elements found on Series X, PS5, PC, and even Series S/Steam Deck. The game runs at 720p supposedly with DLSS enabled in docked mode, with a "rather soft image overall".

Some of the compromises made in the PS4, Xbox One, and original Switch versions are still intact for the Switch 2 version, including the stained glass walkways that block the wide views to the open world. This was spotted in a screenshot from the recent Nintendo Creator's Voice video.

How do we feel about the Switch 2's capabilities now vs other current consoles, given this new information?

LOL they really need to drive those clicks, I think they're really desperate about their income these days... They should move their asses and focus on other games analysis instead, like Clair Obscure that they haven't made yet, maybe they could make some "Gaming on Linux" series as well IDK, so they don't have to excite the stupid toys wars to scratch some pennies

Warner gave it for " free" on Plus recently, don't think they invested on SW2 port , they just delivered what they had avaliable for it...After their recently fail don't think they have budget to improve SW2 port.

Just looking at the screen shots of Switch 2 vs Series S a few weeks ago in some thread was enough for me. Overall Series S just looked better..I mean, if one just dismissed where the Series S looked better I guess some ppl were satisfied.

In time things will get better, but some ppl....really.....really......really....need to keep their expectations in check.

I will probably still pick it up someday when it's on sale. Nothing mentioned here seems like a major deal-breaker to me, and I've been vaguely interested in this game for a while now, even though I have zero investment in the Harry Potter IP.

I even thought about grabbing the Switch version at one point, but the compromises were just too severe. It seemed like I wouldn't be getting anything resembling the full intended experience. That doesn't seem to be the case with the Switch 2 version, even if it's a pretty mid port.

Honestly why anyone is surprised by this is baffling, its a handheld with mediocre specs, it will play Nintendo games well (the reason I will get one eventually) and third party will be fine for the audience (young kids). It is not however going to compete with PS5 or series X yet alone PS5 Pro and PC.

Exactly as expected, the Switch 2 is basically a PS4 with faster storage.

More like between base PS4 and PS4pro with AI inbuild.

The only folks that take this surprise as negative or conspirancy are the Nintendo fanboys. They even attack Digital Foundry now. Normally DF are attacked by Playstation and Xbox fanboys, but now they got another challenger.

I think NS2 is a great machine for the price. And Nintendo exclusive games can finally shine. I'll get one sonner or latter.

If you listen to the clip without bias, they don't attack the Switch 2 or the game. They just present the facts of how it runs, which obviously has some compromises compared to current gen, but still seems solid.

Does Digital Foundry get paid for trash talking about Switch 2 or something?

I mean, they get ad revenue on their website articles and on Youtube, so kinda but not intentionally, yes?

You're gonna see a lot of df content on switch 2 throughout this upcoming gen, mostly getting criticized for the downgrades, especially in current gen only games, and some occasional praises for the impossible ports here and there, just like the first switch.

Anyone else think it is funny that this is the point when DF rank and file start talking about Hogwarts?

They didn't touch it when it came out and forced Richard to do the initial analysis.

see, your problem is that you aren't looking at the clip while suffering from DF Derangement Syndrom. 🤣

No shit, lol, it's a handheld

Yes, it'll be a lot more powerful than the existing Switch and even apparently a bit more powerful than the Deck, but it can't match plugged in consoles that have TDP that is literally multiple times more lol. This is a battery powered device

Also, this is ultimately not the most impressive Switch 2 port either, let's be honest, something like Cyberpunk is so much more impressive

It's not, was confirmed by the devs…

From the OP

Some of the compromises made in the PS4, Xbox One, and original Switch versions are still intact for the Switch 2 version

Both can be correct. The Switch 2 version probably uses a mix of current gen and last gen tech.

HL devs: We are using next gen assets…. DF: No, you are wrong… 😂😂😂 WTH is happening in DF offices? Just take the L.

Hogwarts devs said they used the "next gen" version for this

DF literally dropped proof of the last gen compromises like the stained glass stuff. Hard data.
