Digital Foundry: Oblivion Remaster - Xbox Series X|S Review - New Patch Boosts Perf But Doesn't Fix Stutter

I am playing it on a Series S and it seems to run really well. Is it because my TV has vrr? I always wonder if that makes a difference as it is new to me.

No, game is 30fps with improper frame pacing and stuttering, vrr will help a little bit if your console is set to 120hz output. But you must just be immune to this because game runs like shit.

I don't know, something about this remaster just doesn't sit right with me. You have these hyper realistic world visuals then the characters have this mix of Oblivion goofiness with that same hyper realism and it doesn't mesh well to me.

I still dont get this generations of consoles. With 10x the Power, we get worse IQ.
This isn't a like-for-like comparison with the original Oblivion; that's your answer. You're getting significantly higher fidelity, assets, detail, advanced techniques like lumen, completely revamped character models, all on a different engine, in the remaster/remake on current gen hardware. As a result, those features naturally require far more resources than the original game, and thus certain aspects had to be sacrificed/paired down. Ultimately, you're dealing with machines that simply can't give you everything at once, nor should you expect them to. That's never been the case. It doesn't matter if they feature 10x the performance of previous generation consoles.

Plus, Oblivion Remastered is just… A heavy game to run, even on higher end PC hardware.

The original game, by the way, offers you significantly higher resolution, and considerably higher frame rate, for free, via backwards compatibility.

The longer the game runs in a single session, the worse the frame rate gets. A software reboot fixes it for stretches, before running into the same issue after another session of play.

Performance: Series X | PS5 Pro matching around the same. > Base PS5

So glad I didn't buy this mess.

Honeymoon period is wearing off. Struggling to see the urgency in shitting this out unfinished if it was going to be a shadow drop anyway.

Unless of course, the whole "shadow drop" thing was just a carefully orchestrated drip feed PR campaign!

Why are they revisiting this? We haven't had a single patch

It's literally ps3 Skyrim all over again. lol

It's been 2 weeks and still no PS5 patch, so he decided to push the video out.
And it also has to do with the fact that during this time he has discovered situations that should be known. For example, that the performance degrades as you spend time playing and requires a restart to recover lost fps.
Clearly, the game needs a major patch. Personally, I would prefer them to start by fixing the 30fps mode because fixing everything at once would take much more time. That said, something inside me tells me that the combination of the original game engine + UE5 makes things much more difficult.

I'll risk sounding like an apologist and say that I've been having a blast with the game still, but I'm not too sensitive to hitching like that. The game needs some patches though, for sure.

wut?

That's on Bethesda

Want to look at the track records of Microsoft's PC ports quality versus Sony's?
lol cute that you try to switch the topic to pc ports specifically, to be able to prove a point

but even then go on, you can start with checking pc port launch states of halo , redfall, starfield ,forza motorsport, flight sim and oblivion
not to mention console ports of these games, half of which added 60fps 6 months after release.
also not to mention these scammers are selling "early access" for all these beta-releases, pt-less indy and doom included

I'm very grateful for this game providing me with 75 hours of entertainment for £44, otherwise I would've been rocking back and forth in my chair for two months waiting for the Switch 2. But the performance and bugs are terrible.

They could've at least implemented the unofficial patch. CDPR had no problem with asking modders if they would like their projects included in the complete edition of The Witcher 3.

shut up and get receipts launch states of halo, redfall, starfield ,forza motorsport, flight sim and oblivion, rat.
you are sounding desperate.

Sound desperate? You see how aggressive you are with rat claims? Fucking funny. To me they're all 3rd parties on PC.

I don't even need to go with PC ports, native on console

But TLoU part 1 takes the cake as the worst PC port of the last decade 🤷‍♂️. Not Halo Infinite, not Redfall, not Forza Motorsport, nor even flight sim with cloud saturated and certainly not Oblivion PC

But GAF told me that this engine was the end of all things known and knowledgeable, the anti-life equation, this engine is!

You have nothing but green rat really? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Here's a bonus for you

In the meantime, Indiana Jones, Avowed, Hi-Fi Rush, Forza Horizon 5, Hellblade II, Pentiment, Grounded, Psychonauts 2, Sea of Thieves ghostwire Tokyo, etc heavily counter your claims, Doom dark ages coming in polished too, even the PS5 ports of Indiana jones and FH5 are playing well. 🤷‍♂️

While we have winjer winjer 's thread pretty much telling how it is when a sony game gets on PC

You're getting way too angry over this.

I cant believe the engine still has the same flaws since the Skyrim PS3 days floating around.....just put the Gamebryo engine down, Bethesda.

the fact that the graphics settings fuck up when loading saves points more towards a UE5 issue in this case.

Gamebryo has more issues with too many object states being saved and just bloating everything. this is why the PS3 version of Skyrim was crawling to a halt the bigger your save file was.
the fact that the issues get fixed by rebooting the game and get worse with graphics glitches when loading different saves, seems to be UE5 related, or maybe how UE5 interacts with gamebryo.
