Digital Foundry: Performance Analysis: Destiny on Xbox One

This will never ever ever happen. Ever. Sub-1080p and 30fps with heavy drops is what you should expect going forward.

With all the voices that recently have been screaming out for 60fps/1080p I expect developers to target it. Not everyone of course, but some.

PS4 owners were totally happy with their version when the Xbox beta appeared at 900p, it is only since the news that Microsoft stepped in and helped Bungie get to 1080p on Xbox One that some have become dissatisfied. Their version has not changed, not been gimped or anything else, it is what Bungie said it would be and during the Alpha and Beta people were happy.

Yeah and I think it's completely understandable. Obviously the game did not suddenly look worse, but when you see it running equally on a less powerful system you start to wonder if it couldn't look even better. Given the difference of both consoles pure spec wise I don't think it's far fetched to assume that the ps4 version could be improved without too much crazy optimization required. So people start to wonder why it did not happen. That seems like a normal reaction to me.

Game budgets are not my problem as a gamer. They either deliver something at a price I will pay for they don't.
(I bought destiny)

Higher budgets means higher and longer lengths for companies to go through to recoup the costs. Which means more DLC, Higher Initial priced games, and longer times before price cuts. It absolutely is something you should atleast have a general understanding of as a consumer for any industry.

Every game ever made could look a bit better with more time, like I said earlier no games released so far are maximising either of these systems so by following your logic people should have this reaction to every game made for these systems so far.

Yes, but not every game can obviously be made to look better with a reasonable amount of effort. Just read what I wrote. In case both versions look the same its quite a fair guess that the version on the faster platform can be further optimized without too much hassle. Thats all.

You are then disregarding that the game has to be released and the release date was set well in advance, we know that the Xbox One version must have been 900p pretty late in the day as the beta was 900p. So Microsoft have stepped in late and helped get that version to 1080p close to the end game. Do people then seriously expect Bungie to revisit the finished PS4 version? Or delay the game so they can add a bit more AA to it? I don't think people who want that really understand how deadlines and budgets work.

I was expecting both next gen versions to be close ever since the 1080 on XBO announcement but I do wish there had been improvements in AA, AF, and pop in since the beta.

Engine work and optimization should continue until and after release. It seems the PS4 version has not progressed past the alpha. This tells me Bungie had a very low bar and did not put any effort into the PS4 version. Its great that they put effort into the gimped XB1 and limped it over the finish line, but a little effort on the largest selling SKU with the most horse power would have been nice. Some better AA or unlocked refresh would have been nice. KZ was a launch game and it looks much better, its kind of embarrassing for Bungie.

The hell? Killzone was created by a Sony first party, specifically for that console. A first party who's entire legacy is pretty much "great graphics". Killzone looks better than just about every other PS4 game, so it's kinda embarrassing for EVERY third party?

Is it also embarrassing that no multiplatform games are looking better than Ryse on Xbox One as well? This is a stupid metric to use, especially on a game that needs to run on 360/PS3 as well.

You have so much salt. I feel embarrassed for you after reading this.

Only indie devs. Triple-A developers will drop image quality and framerate in order to present a more visually appealing game.

Naughty Dog and 343i have both made a commitment to 1080p 60fps. Those are two of the most well known developers in gaming.

What?

The PS4 beta looked much better than the alpha, and unless my eyes are deceiving me the full version looks better still.

There's still a Xbox One vs. Playstation 4 face-off coming from Digital Foundry I would wait on that before making premature conclusions.

Your eyes have seen them separated by months each, I'm not sure how you would come to that opinion.

There were definitely lighting effects that were present in the beta that weren't in the alpha. I could be mistaken about the full version, but I do know that it impressed me, visually.

Again, I really want to see the Digital Foundry Face-off, maybe that will clear things up.

Well done, sir. This got a chuckle out of me.

Let's slow our collective roll on that one...ND has gone on record with the 1080/60 goal...343 has clearly only mentioned 60fps...

I absolutely 100% expect H5 to be 900/60 and be comprable to Ryse in visual fidelity...and considering the frame rate increase...I'd be VERY happy with that if I was 343...

I'm still wondering why the Xbox One analysis was made on it's own & not just a face off like they usually do? The game was made on 4 systems & released on the same day.

Because clicks!

They know everyone and their mother would want to know how the Xbox One version performs and would click on it. Then later they'll do the PS4/XBO face-off and enjoy even more clicks because of all the hype from the XO analysis.

Probably more hits. I understand the reason but hope they don't milk it like this too often.

A well reasoned and mature response. Have anything of substance to add?

Honestly, I thought your post was a joke post. My apologies if it wasn't.

It just seems odd to me that someone would expect preferential treatment from video game devs, going so far as to refer to them as lazy for not adhering to their wishes, in order to validate their own console purchase.

People should wait for the face off. Who knows if the PS4 has better AA solution or something to make up for the excess power it has. Otherwise just be happy that there aren't any actual problems on both console versions.

If the game was not shackled by last gen and both versions were equal then I would have a problem. I would indeed feel as if Bungie was being lazy. This is not the case. Therefore I have no problem.

And damn, They haven't even done the head to head yet. Yikes.

Edit; Please tell me somebody posted the El Torro GIF already...

My guess is that person thinks it's unreasonable how you're assessing the game in relation to something else rather than its own merits and existing expectations.

The potential improvements you mentioned weren't brought up as big issues during the beta gameplay on PS4. Everyone can relate to wanting their outlook reaffirmed, but when you're disappointed that something else is better than expected, it feels like sour grapes if there's the impression someone's unhappy with what was already there for them in response.

Potential improvements were brought up again and again throughout the alpha and beta. Many people wanted a 60fps game or non FXAA. Anything. What it loos like is MS bullied Bungie into parity and Bungie left the PS4 version 'good nuff' for at least the last 6+ months. Squeaky wheel gets the oil.

Some might find what you're saying either unrealistic in terms of technical goals or simply silly in terms of the machinations you think must be at play. Hence the gif.

No offense to you, but it doesn't look that way at all.

You are letting your emotions on this subject cloud any sort of logic you may have in your thought process.

What you're basically saying is you feel there's some conspiracy theory afoot, with Microsoft at the helm, to make the PS4 appear like a lesser console than it actually is. All because you feel you deserve special treatment from Bungie for buying one video game console over another.

Do you ever read what you type before hitting the submit button? Yeah MS "bullied" Bungie by offering to send their own fucking technicians to help get the XBO version up to par.

Or maybe we were (and still are) also busting our asses on every other platform, too, going as far as to deploy patches and updates for graphical issues (and a myriad of others) mid stride during beta to make sure everyone has a great experience, and that we deliver something we're a proud of anywhere we ship Destiny.

That's not the drama you're looking for, but it is the truth. Every platform is different. Each has strengths and we aim to take advantage of ALL THE THINGS.

The aim was completely off target I guess.

Just let people unlock the framerate on PS4 like so many other games do. It requires practically no effort, and it will max out the machine like everyone wants it.

It's true that while playing the beta I remember PS4 fan being pretty quiet, which is certainly not the case with the games that you can tell are really pushing the hardware like KZ, Infamous, or TLOU in 60FPS mode.

Again... 1080p/30fps on both consoles does not automatically equal full parity. The PS4 version could very well have improved effects and graphical tweaks that aren't immediately noticeable.

Digital Foundry is very good at picking up on these differences, so let's wait and see what they have to say.

Awwwww man... But that means the torches can't be fired up and the witch hunt can't start in time for the weekend!
