Digital Foundry Retro: Xbox 360 20th Anniversary - Unboxing An Untouched Launch Console!

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

November 22nd marks the 20th anniversary of Xbox 360 - the console that enjoyed unprecedented success for Microsoft, and is closely associated with the origins of Digital Foundry itself. To celebrate the occasion, Rich sourced an untouched Xbox 360 Core System, left in storage for 20 years. John is on unboxing duty, discovering the wonders that lie within that signature Xbox-green box, then hooking up the console to a CRT to re-live the 2005 launch "Blades" dashboard experience.

A video for nostalgic fans and proof that no matter how carefully and securely you store a console... the packaging will eventually deteriorate.

My experience as a collector who keeps the boxes and sadly sees how I'm irretrievably losing some (though I can't expect much more from boxes that are 36 years old, like those for the Master System II, Mega Drive, or Super Nintendo).

I got my x360 when Tales of Vesperia came out and it was a fantastic console. The last xbox they made before MS lost their way imho.

I remember getting my 360 and going back to my dorm room, and downloading the geometry wars retro evolved demo. Pure particle bliss. I fired it up on Steam yesterday for the first time in forever and was able to get a score north of 770,000. I think 1.1 million was the highest I ever got, but that was back in 2006. I didn't realize that switching over to that LCD is why I could never replicate my high score. I was completely ignorant to the concept of input or display lag.

X360 was solid hardware except its major 2 flaws- no mandated baseline hdd and that nasty crucial af rrod, in terms of exclusives(including moneyhated/timed)/overall games it was top notch, ez to develop for and being 1year earlier to the market vs super expensive(for back then) super hard to develop for ps3 that was a bullseye hit from MS, peter moore(back then xbox ceo) was really a true visionary.

Now imagine giggly girl dei sarah or pinocchio nose "good guy" phil doing something like that- they would never, reasons are many, but just to name a few: 0 vision, 0 charisma, 0 devotion.

That lead-free solder broke many gamers hearts.

Still the best console ever, in my opinion.
Truly impressive how many series got their start on that machine.
And how explosive the online play was during those years.
Really felt like the last major leap forward in gaming.

Sad its been 20 years since we had something like that.
