Digital Foundry Sniper Elite: Resistance - DF Tech Review - PlayStation 5/PS5 Pro/Xbox Series X|S

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

A rarity for 2025 in that it's a cross-gen game with Xbox One and PS4 versions, Sniper Elite: Resistance offers much to fans of the series and is seriously enjoyable to play. However, the technology powering the game does feel a little long in the tooth. Oliver Mackenzie reviews this one.

- Cross gen. No real technical hiccups to speak-of at launch.
- Long Draw distances praised with reasonably good outdoor lighting. Interior lighting often suffers. The GI solution is not that high quality and can fall apart on closer inspection.
- Some flat areas aside, materials are good quality
- Reflections are done via a mixture of SSR and cube maps
- Compared to 2022's Sniper Elite 5, the visual makeup is very similar
- DF would love to see a true current-gen only game from Rbellion

- Image quality suffers from aliasing. The solution is ineffective, no TAA or FSR2, seems to be using a basic post-process solution. PC version doesn't have any AA or up-scaling options
- PS5 Pro enhancement is just the PS5 version with higher DRS bounds
- Otherwise PS5, Pro and Series X have the same visual settings

- All 3 (PS5/Pro/SX) offer a very good 60fps performance profile with minor one-off drops.
- Series S drops to 1080p, against DRS 4K on SX.
- Series S also targets 30fps, it's locked but DF are surprised it doesn't target 60fps
- Rebellion launched Sniper Elite 5 on Series S with unlocked and patched it to a 30fps lock later, too.

Loving the anti anti aliasing solution here.

It's 2025 and FXAA is still alive and kicking 🤭

But, yes, playing this right now and it's a damn fun game. The image quality and aliasing is incredibly obvious. Everything in the mid to far field is shimmering and jittering like bad old bad post process AA.

No anti aliasing in 2025 is a joke. I have been years asking to Rebellion to add TAA but they ignore it. A shame because I love this franchise

I have a beefy NVIDIA card but I honestly prefer SSR and cube maps for reflections on the usual surfaces when they're well done and make sense. The effects are more diffuse and convincing, and they obviously keep performance nice and fast. All that crap about how looking down at the floor can make SSR vanish from the viewport is true only as the result of lazy implementation. There are quite a few good games out there that use SSR and avoid this happening completely - reflections don't disappear from view with big camera movements. I can't be the only cynical person to have noticed this. The games that don't implement SSR and cube maps properly have them as a secondary afterthought; Nvidia told the devs to push the RTX reflections instead.

Considering how game budgets are ballooning out of control, a relatively small-ish dev like Rebellion choosing to stick with their existing tech instead of trying to compete with the AAA giants and push technological boundaries honestly seems like a smart move to me.

I love the series and I'll pick this up for sure, looks fine to me.

Look forward to the switch 2 version. Rebellion have made some amazing switch ports of their other games for switch. Wonder what the new ports will bring.

Amen, Sniper Elite 3 and 4 on Switch were phenomenal, I'd buy 5 and Resistance on Switch 2 in a heartbeat.

I picked up zombie army trilogy and 4 each one was priced ridiculously low at under £10 I think. Some crazy sale and I picked up sniper elite 4 deluxe and strange brigade for cheap as well (think it was the deluxe edition again really cheap too) apart from the DLC and MTX heavy add ons of zombie army 4 the other games are welcome bargains. I really think rebellion have stumbled upon a good formula for a mid tier/budget game. Who doesn’t love killing Nazi’s ?add the zombie nazi’s and well you have some great action titles there. The fact all games on switch run and look well is amazing. Sure it might not be 60fps but at 30 and looking as good as they do. that’s good enough for me. The games themselves are great b tier games and I mean that in the best possible way.

Yeah I also really enjoyed Zombie Army 4 and Strange Brigade, nothing like a bit of nice solid AA fun.
They looked and ran nicely on Switch and the gyro controls were excellent and made aiming a snap.

Honestly, I would rather have a game with no TAA, than with a bad implementation of TAA.
There has been many times when I wish games had an option to turn it off, because it caused so much blurring and temporal artifacts.
Anyway, for anyone on PC, it's probably possible to enable MSAA in the GPU control panel. Or at least, inject SMAA into the game.
I would not recommend using FXAA. That thing is as blurry as the worst implementations of TAA, but without any of the advantages.

You still have strange brigade on switch ? Wanna play Multiplayer?

I strongly support this type of a development format, where a new game is made in 2-3 years with a limited budget, but still offers a great experience.

Lack of AA in 2025 is, however, inexcusable.

Haven't really got the time these days as what little game time I have is tied up with all the games I haven't played yet, (currently racing through Turbo Overkill) sorry about that, but thanks for the offer. :)

1080p30? Wow the Series S sucks... a terrible investment compared to the launch PS5 Digital...

I mean .. a decent TAA with some sharpening is always great.

That being said, you get used to the shimmering after a bit of playing, but the initial shock of how jittery everything looks is a bit off-putting.
