Disappointing next-gen reveals

I'm comparing both consoles reveals to consoles last gen.

So back in 2013 we had unbelievable demos like this:

and games like these:

Killzone Shadow Fall

Ryze son of Rome

Forza 5

All of them clearly impossible on previous generation hardware, so far the most impressive we had was Senua's sacrifice 2... Honestly it's not that far above the magicial demo (or the Uncharted 4 / God of War, etc. reveals)... Now at best we are shown raytracing (maybe) or some gameplay of games that could clearly be run on the base PS4 if you cut down the frame rate and resolution (and a couple more graphical effects).. Every single games we have seen to far is "cross gen" as far as I know and it's pretty obvious.

So I am disappointed, this is as if all we would have been shown in the early days of the PS4/XB1 were the new CoD, Assasins Creed with the pirates, and some indie titles.

None of those 2013 reveals were impressive.

At least... not nearly to the degree of the E3 PS3 reveals. That's been my standard.

Yeah we got lack luster reveals so far.

MS has done a better job then Sony so far, but nothing compared to previous gens.

Can we consider the next gen was revealed though? The only thing we had was spec numbers with crossgen titles.

Haha, watching a few of those trailers and they were really pushing 2nd screen game enhancements. Like checking stats on your games live from your tablets etc. I never bought into it, it wasn't my thing but I also feel like the fascination from developers dropped off a cliff sometime between then and now. It makes 2013 feel like the 90s or something!

I'm not judging reveals too much right now. Both major companies are doing things different this time around and I'm sure lots of plans have been scuppered due to the pandemic. I am living in a world where I can't even go buy a Mocha and blueberry muffin. I'll judge once I've seen more. But I would say that more traditional reveals are on their way, for sure.

As someone above here said... the only time 'next gen' truly impressed me was when we went from SNES/Megadrive to PSX/N64.

With every new generation since then it felt like the changes get more and more minor to the point where I can now still play late Xbox 360/PS3 games and think they're great looking.

We haven't see many games yet and only MS has shown some trailers so far.

As for HW I like how MS has presented the SEX whereas whatever Sony is doing with the PS5 communication is yuck, need to get their act together.

Yeah, it's disappointing from both companies. Instead of big bang reveals we get information bit by bit and next to nothing about games.

We still have yet to even see the launch lineups for PS5 or XBSX.
That's the problem, by this time in 2013 we had seen two PS4 games and 1 or 2 xb1 game... We had actual gameplay.

Now, barely anything that's truly impressive (I really liked the senua 2 demo, but it's not more impressive that the uncharted 4, ff VII re, TLoU2 etc. Reveals are... These games will work on the PS5 as well).

Yup, Sony is worse this time around, but the last time they were not that different, except for the fact that the initial reveal had some intro to the OS and some footage to show we were in a new area... They also showed any sign of life between February and E3 in 2013, so this is their style, I admit that MS is better at presentation, but this is hardly something to brag about...

I could not care less about the hardware reveal of any console... Last time around I preferred how the XB1 looked (even more so with the S and X models), but it never made me think of them as well balanced consoles, despite the PS4's loud sound level and stupid slant.

So hopefully around E3 we will have something meaningful to chew in and keep on console warring.

Also note that I will not consider MS as a serious publisher in the console market again until they have actually delivered a couple of really amazing games - they have proven their ability to show amazing trailers time and time again, without their games being that good (you can like them, but people don't buy consoles to play MS games as often as they buy them to play Sony or even less Nintendo games).

Both console "reveals" so far have been incredibly cheap and underwhelming in terms of marketing. I don't care for the E3 spectacle but some proper video conference from both Sony and MS where they will show their games and properly explain the features of their new systems would have been greatly appreciated.

Instead all we got so far are a bunch of tweets,Youtubers talking about the systems and boring GDC conferences. Lame AF.

Such a weird off topic response..

We haven't had a reveal/E3 event equivalent to that in 2013 for both Sony and Microsoft. Just be patient, I don't think many are comprehending on how significant the jump actually is, in 6 months time you'll look back at this OP and laugh at it.

The only true next-gen teaser we've seen in form of HellBlade 2 is mighty impressive.

I'll admit I miss the more traditional reveals, and at this point last gen I was way more hyped about the Ps4 than I am about the Ps5/Series X right now.
With that said, there's still plenty of time before they launch. I imagine Microsoft will have a lot to show during their digital E3 conference and I imagine Sony does have some form of reveal event/stream/video planned where they'll show the console, price, games, etc.

What I care about is these machines having a solid games lineup, good features and reasonable price. If they do then I don't care if it's shown only 3 or 4 months before release.

I guess it's also because the way info/reveals etc is shared has changed since 2013. I feel even companies like Apple feed you the info in a more continuous way rather than one big splash.

Where either of the these next gen consoles really revealed? I feel like we've had little nuggets, especially from Sony (little mini nugs), but not large blow out just yet. I'll wait till i get the bombastic reveal to pass judgement on how the reveals went.

Why is this even a thread? There has been practically 0 reveals. We have yet too see gameplay for Halo Infinite lol or even Hellblade 2.

Sony still won't come out of the fucking shadows. We don't even know launch titles other than Halo Infinite, Godfall and the Quantum Error game. And those are all crossgen games with Halo Infinite being the only exciting one.

Please shut down this nonsense thread until we actually see games running real time. Thanks.

This is the reason why this is a thread, I want to know if I am the only one who noticed.

Halo and hellblade are cross gen games, like the first CoD and assassin's Creed released on the PS4 and Xbox one... They may look better on the new console, but nothing is next gen inthese games... Sorry.

Nothing comes even close to the shock that was watching that E3 2000 real time trailer of Metal Gear Solid 2, I didnt even had Internet back then so I watch it a couple of weeks later in my father's job.

Coming from PS1 that was surreal.

edit: fuck that was 20 years ago, what the fuck I wasted my life lol

I had a Dreamcast before then, so while I was impressed... not as much as if I had not had a taste of "next-gen" already... but that was a reveal!

These are videos from E3 or reveal conference.
We still don't have neither right now, so what's your point, OP?
Just wait and then judge. You have so few info about these console and their line up that it makes no sense moaning about them being "disappointing".

This is exactly what the topic it like... pre-release hardware showcase.

some are from the reveal conference... this is the point... but you are right, I should probably not have included E3 videos.
Exactly, the reveal conference. We didn't see any official reveal of both console with their line up, so why be disappointed in advance?
They aren't obliged to showcase their line up in a specific moment, we should just wait and see.
We're also in a very serious moment for a lot of countries, due to the virus, so it's very likely that things will be a lot different this time. Live conferences seems to be impossible right now and probably we won't see any "standard" reveal.
However, we should still judge when we will see the games in action, don't you think?

I keep saying the problem is the 16gb and everybody doesnt seem to get the point, everybody is talking about teraflops and hertz and other stuff all the while not understanding its the memory thats responsible for visuals, they got caught up and drunk on the resolutions and high fps too blind to see the that their being cheated.

Yup, well probably... it's sure that 32GB would have looked better, but given how a game like Doom Eternal looks, I'm not overly worried about the memory... unless Ray Tracing requires exponentially more, then again they are probably not fast enough to handle big textures + Ray Tracing.

However, we should still judge when we will see the games in action, don't you think?
Obviously, but I still think they should have shown at least a few seconds for 1 or 2 next-gen only games, or Cerny could have demonstrated the PS5's potential with a few clips... etc. and I am really underwhelmed with MS's decision to not release true "next-gen" games along their new shiny toy, they don't have to drop the cross gen projects (Sony is apparently not) but they should do both for a little while... 120fps Gears 5 is nothing new if you have a powerful PC.

The 16gb will be the problem, i dont want to see the same graphics for another 7 years in high resolutions and fps or raytraced its the same shit. Games will look good no doubt but wont look good enough or expected and they are playing everybody knowing all people care is high res and fps not polygons and physics.

I highly doubt Hellblade 2 is a cross gen game. Was it specified anywhere it's a cross gen game? That game is at least 2 years out.

Halo Infinite is cross gen yes but looked pretty next gen to me via the in engine trailer they showed. I am pretty positive the xbox one version will look like complete trash.

You should already know and expect too see cross gen games for first 2 years or so every start of the generations. It's always been like that.

That fish game for the xsx easily takes the cake for disappointing reveal lol

I wouldn't even consider it as anything. It's simply a 1 man show who is clearly not an expert in all things of game development.

It's more like "Look at me! I am learning how to code!" Rather than "This is what XSX can really do!"

I mean its all we got right now. Not much else to really compete yet lol.

I am pretty positive that in June we will see everyone blow their load. Starting with Halo Infinite.

The only game we've seen actual gameplay of is Godfall and I am not impressed. Granted it is a 3rd party indie game so I am okay with it, it looks just as you'd expect it too look like out of a non 1st party launch title.

What are you even talking about..

Here's a list of 1st party PS4 launch titles. Explain to me what about them was next-gen and couldn't be done on the PS3? Just curious.

Flower
Killzone Shadow Fall
Knack
Resogun
Sound Shapes
Escape Plan
Flow

To be fair, Killzone Shadow Fall really was impressive graphically.
