Holy shit the story and lore is so confusing for someone new to the series.
I'll tag Knife of Dunwall spoilers, but be aware Daud's campaign is as excellent as Corvo's. Even with the plot figured out, it's quite a ride to take.
First game was the same story told by the point of view of Corvo and Daud, with the first being the bodyguard of the empress and the latter the actual assassin who murdered her.
Both had their powers bestowed on them by a mysterious figure called the Outsider, who many people assume is tied to whales in some fashion.
The Outsider says he gives his powers to people he finds interesting, but many clues in the first game sort of give away the fact that what he's doing is choosing people who create chaos and shake things up. The first game had another gifted called Granny Rags, who was a witch and was trying to find a formula (or to re-discover it, since she lost her memory after killing her own husband) to make bonecharms and runes out of human bones instead of whale bones.
Corvo is freed by the Outsider and set on a path to vengeance, while Daud his put on the tracks of Delilah by the Outsider himself indicating that the Outsider and Delilah may be enemies of some sort.
While the ones responsible for the coup are looking for Emily to use her as a pawn and a front, Delilah has her own plans for Emily: she wants to exchange Emily's soul with hers, by trapping her in a magical painting Delilah herself has created. Daud invades her home and subsequently her realm, kills Delilah and stops the ritual to bind Emily.
In the end of Knife of Dunwall Daud reveals to Corvo what happened with Delilah. Depending on the amount of chaos during the run, Corvo will spare him or kill him.

Huh something feels off about how this game controls. I turned sensitivity up to 60 and that's helped a bit but it still feels a bit heavy. I read about input lag but it also seems like there might be performance issues?
Have you tried to completely disable friction? Controls should feel less sluggish after that.
