DmC Review Thread (Release Date - 1/15/13) Embargo is over!

My friend got this today and went on about how it was the dog's bollocks. Wouldn't shut up about it -- till he went off to watch X-factor. Target market confirmed? :P

Bottom of the 1UP review, I don't know what they mean by "here" cause there is no link.

edit - seems like they are working on a link, still broken

PS3 vs. 360

This review was based solely off the Xbox 360 version of DmC. My colleague, Ryan Clements of IGN, tells me the PS3 version suffers from additional technical hiccups. Read his review here to learn more.

Interesting...

Repetitive Mobs said:
One aspect of the mobs that doesn't sit so well is the colour-coding. After a while, blue and red demons will begin appearing, which can only be killed by the same colour of weapon. Hit them with anything else and Dante bounces off, exposed. It's baffling that the game builds such a free-flowing combat system and then at certain points funnels you down it. This proscriptive tendency also shows up in some of the larger 'standard' enemies, who have obvious weak points in their patterns and have to be dealt with in more or less the same manner every time. They can still deal you some serious damage, of course, but fighting them always feels like the same fight.

Bad Boss Fights said:
The bigger disappointment is the rogues' gallery of bosses - particularly so given Devil May Cry's past form. Several are great visual ideas - especially the Raptor News host and the foul-mouthed Succubus - but the fights themselves are uniformly disappointing, perhaps because they all feature obvious signposting. Every single boss is beaten through a gimmicky weakness, whether it's yanking a glowy red bit with your chain or pounding a glowy red bit on the ground. There's the odd great moment, but that's the best you can say about them.

Shitty Climax said:
For a Devil May Cry game, that's a huge disappointment, but what's worse is DmC's closing act. This is a cataclysm and, sadly, I'm not being literal. A boss rush near the end is a Devil May Cry tradition, but DmC foregoes this in favour of a mundane extended platform stage before a few minor fights tied into a rudimentary puzzle. The final boss fights are an even bigger let-down. The first re-hashes an earlier fight, except it's much easier. The second then squanders a perfect set-up, interrupting its flow four times for unnecessary cut-scene dialogue before yet another gimmick climax. This is no Devil Hand, no Jeanne. DmC's ending should have been a stage for Dante's glorious combat skills in all their free-flowing majesty - but it's a squib.

But Great Game? said:
Don't think too much about the lows, because the highs here are so very high, and show without question that Capcom has faith in the right developer. Ninja Theory has absolutely nailed the leading man and the combat system - by far the most important things - and DmC is clearly a labour of love, a tribute as well as a new beginning.

8 / 10

RIP DMC?

I wonder if RPS is gonna review it.

No score for fanboy-fuel but it's going to he interesting to see PC reviewers I respect tackle a console game.

Edit: I'm also glad that NT has finally escaped the dark void of shitty games. Let's just hope they hire a decent writer for DmC2.

The Eurogamer review echo my sentiments. Boss fights were really mediocre, climax was very underwhelming and color coded enemies are asstacular.

Reviews seem around the range that both Heavenly Sword and Enslaved got. I liked those games so i'm not arguing that DmC is going to be bad, but if I were someone who wasn't excited before based on the dev I don't see how this changes that.

I say they did that with Enslaved. It had a lot of faults, but was a solid product overall. Good not great, hardly shitty.

DmC seems to be reviewing as another level up, and I can believe it; I really enjoyed the demo.

I get the feeling that this game will be one of those games that highlights the ridiculousness of the game review industry. So many of the complaints seem to be similar to what they lumped on Best Rider. And while the latter is no 8/10, it seems like the 5-6 point difference is "because Capcom".

Unless reviewers didn't actually play Beast Rider to the end, which knowing my ex-peers isn't unlikely.

Reviews combined with the demo, much better performance and impressions by people who know what to look for in action games give me enough confidence that it'll be much better than both games.

We gave it 9/10. For what it's worth, I completely adored it. The second I finished it, I started again on higher difficulties.

The one thing veterans might not like is that the first play isn't very challenging (aside from a few spots), but that's not necessarily a horrible thing, as it gives you chance to enjoy Ninja Theory's storytelling, then play the harder difficulties.

Beast Rider is definitely a much lower quality game. No doubt. Funny you mention it, I was trying to play it again a few days ago cause I found it in a bargin bin. Made it three chapters in and couldn't stand it anymore.
