not seeing that in my country, yet the hysteria from basic bitches crying about people not being forced to wear masks is palpable
Yeah, that's the thing.. people who actually locked down / required masks early avoided huge breakouts.

This whole "well gee it didn't happen here why we wearing masks?" thing is just mind numbing. It's a preventative measure, and it works.

People thought the same thing in Arizona here in the US. Now it's a huge hotspot.. because all it takes is one big "super spreader" event and even a not that dense population can be ravaged.

So you're telling me Canada avoided ICU overloads because of strict mask usage? This has only started in earnest in the past few weeks

Canada incredibly quickly closed schools and otherwise implemented lockdown procedures (and social distancing, which in the major urban areas yeah included mask wearing.)

Far more strictly than the US.

It's not just masks; it was quick action.. and then once you start re-opening after lockdown that's when masks start to become more important.

Also, as I mentioned..it's incredibly simple and effective.

Well, we also had these huge protests across the entire country, where pictures show iffy mask discipline at best.

These states were doing fine until, oh, 2 weeks after the protests kicked off. Im sure it is just a coincidence though.

My ICU was nearly all COVID patients in early April. We don't admit very many octaganerians to our ICU. They're generally palliated on the ward if they get that sick. Goals of care are generally pretty reasonable here. The average patient in our ICU was in their 50s. We had several in their 30s. We locked down mid march. and thankfully early April was the worst of it. If we hadn't, we would have become the next Italy or NYC.

I don't know what your wifes exprience with COVID was, but it sounds like she had none.
You wouldnt have that over here and we never had.

My wifes whole building the mccaig tower in foothills medical the largest hospital in western canada and the 3rd largest hospital in whole canada had barely any patients.
You can look at the stats.
Her and everyone was trained to treat covid patients . They had in april several call meetings with hospital from new york sharing ways to deal with the situation but it never kicked in here.

I would like to add to this that the alberta goverment gave alberta health over 500million dollars to help out . We got soo many ventilators we had to ship it to the east coast and the us cuz we had no use for it.
And on top many were sent on vacation cuz the whole building was designated for covid only and since they had very few my wife and others had to stay home.

But here is the kicker.

What happened to the 500 mill? Cuz half the staff was sitting home and we didnt need more mo ey for equipment.
Also know alberta gov cut funding prior to all this so hospitals were already short staffed due to hiring freeze.
I tell you where it went. Into the unions pocket and some bullshit contractors who charged thousands of dollars for a fucking toilet for example.

It's actually pretty hard to transmit outdoors. There's a pretty big study show that didn't have a big effect. Especially since it caused a lot of people to avoid work/businesses/etc. Certainly SOME got Covid at protests, but not a significant portion of new cases. Look at Seattle, epicentre of protesting..massive testing effort.. relatively low infection rate since the protests.

Those same places opened bars and restaurants though.

You have an incredibly low population density in Calgary. Like 1/15th of a city like Seattle not too far away.

And also implemented strict lockdown procedures.

2 + 2 = the problem wasn't as bad there.

It's true that COVID was never going to effect places with really low population density quite as much. You live essentially in a big spread out middle of nowhere city.

But coming to the conclusion that because a hospital in Calgary wasn't overflowing that they must be lying about them overflowing in places like NYC.. or Houston.. or Florida... is.. something else.

No one is saying there was or isnt a threat.
I was amongst the first ones here who was talking about this all the way back in december and oh the hate i got for it.
You can go back in my history.
I already prepped in january and was ready.
I still have about 40 liters of hand san in my house.
Again you are not dealing with a denier here.
Hell my sister who is also a nurse in germany told me all about it.

But the fact is here we never had and never will have anything even remotly to what other places went through.
So from my point of view in my area its all bullshit.

Wearing mask here means nothing other then make you feel safer a bit.
But without it its all the same.

Exactly.

As mentiined in other thread here or in general in canada the distances are just too big and even calgary that is larger then new york in has 1.5 mill population.

But this is exactly my point that here they over reacted and ruined many peoples lives .

There was no need for it.

And now they still try to fuck with us.

No noone said that.
Through my wife i had always first hand information from doctors in new york stuff news wouldn even dare to show or mention.

But my current take on all this is that its over.

The worst is over.

Yet i many places they over do it with their strickt measures mandated masks etc.

We here are shilded from all exposure of the virus.
And if other countries would do the same and not let people cross travel and essentialy create backflow of cases this virus could be managed much better and without the need of lockdowns etc.

But i cant tell you how many of my friends in europe already travel to croatia italy etc for vacation.

Ah I see the “masks work for sure” guy is from Canada.

yeah no shit it’s gonna be easier to stop a disease in a country with 1/10th the population of the US

also Canada has a ton of land meaning there are 4 people per Square km. America has 35 people in the same amount of space.

but it must be the amazing magical masks alone suuuuure

Canadians don’t live in Igloos in the arctic.
Canadian cities are denser than American ones.
And honestly, Canada’s response to
Covid has been pretty mediocre. Just not as bad as the USAs.

Oh yeah scientists hahahahahah i ca go hahahahah for days.

Fun fact when i went to my doctor prior lockdown he and many others even on the news were telling my how i should worry about the flu but not covid.

And now its the other way.

What ever prints them money i guess.

So because your doctor and cable news changed their tune, then the actual scientists that have been warning Us from the start must be all wrong and corrupt. Ok.

Monday - Friday 5 AM - 3 PM Mask on

Whenever I'm in stores, drive-thru, anything dealing with other people I'm wearing it.

It’s not mandated where I live and I have yet to wear a mask.

I’m not against wearing a mask but there’s been no need to given how low the population density is coupled with the fact that I work from home now.

I may need to once I’m back in the office in a couple weeks but I could walk around with a hockey stick fully extended and still not run into people closer than that downtown much less the suburbs.

There is no mandatory mask wearing in canada.
And people are fine.
In a city with 1.5 million we are fine. We had what 4000 cases here? In the city? Moat resolved in a week or two.
Only 120 active cases that are sitting home on their asses.

No nurses and doctors dont wear full time mask for years what a stupid statement. Ask my wife.

I can't tell if you seriously think I'm implying doctors and nurses literally walked around with masks 24/7 before all this. If so, I mean when doing their job, and even then not constantly, but on and off during the day as needed.

And i don't need to ask your wife, I have a doctor in the family that deals with this daily.

yes, I wear them whenever I leave the house, surprised that some countries don't mandate them at all.
where I work, it is mandatory to wear masks and to change your clothes when you arrive and when you leave.

also, you won't be able to get to a supermarket, malls or public places if you don't wear a mask and if you have a high temp.
we've got some malls that have their customers' faces and temp automatically taken and the lift would have pedals instead of lift buttons.

but it's really hard to maintain social distance though. once, I got a kid running around and bumped at me, her mom scolded the shit out of her lmao

What backwards country you live in.
My wife is a nurse for 13 years.

I had heart surgery was in hospital for 2 weeks.
Other then in the op no one wears a mask.
If you have patients that are contagious then yes you wear a mask.

Really where the fuck you live where nurses and doctora run around all day with a mask before all this?

Its fucking scary over here.

28 new cases in whole of calgary area. Thats not the city it counts for outside the city and probably some meat factory or nursing home again.
94 new cases in whole of alberta.
Most of them asymptomatic and sitting home for 2 weeks.

Its really fuckin scary it will get me tomorrow if i dont look out.

Leave me alone with this nonesence.

No shit dude.
I was the one telling people in real life including my family and here on gaf all the way in december. I am probably way ahead of you in this.
I was already prepping while you were asleep.
And news fucking flash. I am prepping for wave 2 and not for the virus reason but for the reason people will empty the stores like idiots once again.

if i'm going indoors in a public place, yes, but really outside of trips to the grocery store/hardware store we're mostly staying home

if i'm walking the dogs, driving around in my car, going for a job, etc... then no
