Do non-upgraded BC Switch 1 games run in portable mode or docked mode on Switch 2?

Not talking about upgraded games obviously just games that are running in BC mode. Presumably even handheld mode on Switch 2 has the grunt to run Switch 1 docked mode. Have not heard anything about this...

Switch 1 games running in it's portable mode could look extra ugly given the resolution.

We don't know what the default behavior will be at the moment, but the Switch 2 is definitely much more powerful than the Switch 1 in docked mode so I'd expect the games to take advantage of the extra power.

I hope we'll see plenty of patches, though even then we haven't heard anything from Nintendo

Presumably it would just default to Switch 1 docked mode for games. I mean if it has the grunt to do Switch 1 docked mode...why even bother with Switch 1 portable mode....

Either way I feel like this is a huge question that isn't clearly answered yet. Imagine if for some reason Switch 1 BC just runs in portable mode on Switch 2 and the only exception is for explicit upgrades. That would be a dealbreaker for me.

Knowing Nintendo, it will use the same mode as on NS1, but for only 9.99/month you can unlock special mode in which these games will be running in docked mode while in handheld on NS2 even without the patch

I really don't think it will. Docked mode is more than just a performance boost. The games assume you're not playing handheld.

For example, Switch 1 games in docked mode disable the touchscreen which would be problematic when running on Switch 2 handheld.

I'd love Switch 2 to do it, but I just don't think Nintendo will support it.

Just using the docked preset should be the preferred behaviour with perhaps some games using touch screen which you might want to whitelist to use the handheld preset.

It would suck if it's still using Switch 1 portable mode at all imo. I feel like playing Switch 1 games docked mode on Switch 2 portable mode would be one of the major selling points of this thing....

Switch 1 games in their portable profile running at their shitty resolution on a 7.9inch 1080p display is not gonna look so good....

I think the default behavior should be handheld mode, because some games may have handheld-specific functions like touch screen, and Nintendo should always err on the side of "it just works". But it would be catastrophic if they didn't have a docked mode option a la PS boost mode.

That´s actually a really clever question, OP.
Assumingly it should be the docked version, due to the new power.

Ohh, I TOTALLY AGREE. This would be a big selling point (for me too), especially given the bigger screen and upped resolution. Would definitely see myself purchasing NS2 for this solely

I mean the example that I'm talking is more comparable to using the full blown PS4 Pro version in BC mode than just boosting the PS4 base versions framerate.

You want the resolution of Switch 1 docked mode...not just improved framerates of Switch 1 portable mode..otherwise it's still going to look terrible....

That's actually not true, at least from emulating Switch games. Only a few games like Rayman Legends disable modes when you play in docked. The benefits outweight the potential downsides so I hope Nintendo at least offers an option.

I agree, my example was meant more on giving the user an option to toggle than to decide for them what mode it will run in undocked.

Ah yes a man of taste!

What about

I got Blacksad on the switch for some reason. Runs in the 18-20 fps range and is hell to play even with it being a Telltale like. Loading takes forever. Textures missing. Such trash.

Will be my first game I boot up on Switch 2 whenever I get one.

Nintendo has said little about BC beyond being transparent that some games may have issues and documenting which games those currently are.

I think changing to docked mode might break how some Switch games work when handheld. If that's the case, I would expect Nintendo would take the conservative approach even if docked mode would make the experience for most games better.

I'm sure it will run at Handheld-BC on handheld mode and Docked-BC on docked mode.
And Handheld-BC will upscale like shit. It will be the 3DS backcompat shitty image quality all over again...

If it's doing BC that is not emulation...I don't see what the concern is.....

It kills some of the value of Switch 2 for me. Like yes I'm sure a lot of the core Nintendo games will get upgrades but having all games default to Switch 1 docked mode in Switch 2 handheld mode would be a significant selling point for me....

Not sure what you mean by BC vs emulation in relation to the comment.

What I'm referring to is games like Super Mario 3D All-Stars where motion controls change to touch controls when playing handheld. This sort of thing likely only applies to a handful of games, but I could see this as a reason why Nintendo would be cautious and default to the original handheld parameters instead of what was used for docked.

Yeah I actually want to see how the shittest switch 1 games performance wise run on the switch 2.
I'm interested in seeing if we can finally get a stable version of Deadly Premonition 1 at 60 fps. PC can go up to 60, but that port is beyond broken. Other console versions are also capped at 30 and crash constantly.

The Switch version could technically go up to 60, but the hardware wasn't strong enough in the open world to go higher than 20-30.

This has been achieved in CFW on Switch 1 with ReverseNX years ago, so pretty embarrassing if Nintendo can't manage it.
