Do You Consider Messenger Bags on Men a Purse?

Yes. Pockets are for your phone, wallet, keys, smokes etc.

Anything bigger, get a backpack.

A guy at work gets a lot of shit for rocking one of those messenger murse bags, more so by the girls at work.

That's what I've been using for like 2 years :

Don't know if I could use a "regular" bag again.

I use one because a backpack would make me look like a high school kid, and i'm already the youngest guy at the office by far. It's just a bag, there is absolutely nothing inherently feminine about it.

It really depends on how it looks. Any ornamentation and it begins to stray into purse territory. It needs to look 100% utilitarian.

Case in point.

Eh. I think there's an argument that its less manly because its sacrificing practicality for looks, which typically isn't a manly thing to do. Wouldn't say its feminine necessarily, but certainly closer to that side than a backpack.

As with anything, societal norms change, though. The more people that wear it, the less criticized it'll be. Its pretty standard nowadays I think. I dont think twice seeing somebody wearing one, although I do prefer a backpack still for practical purposes.

With a messenger bag, you can reach into the bag without having to take it off first. With a backpack, you have to take it off to retrieve items.

I find a backpack just tends to keep everything fairly still, whereas sometimes a hand is required on a messenger bag/satchel to keep is still/stop it rubbing on your legs. Especially with my laptop bag, that thing swings, rubs and generally pisses me off.

Though I am a Uni student so most of us are using backpacks anyway, I see fairly few messenger bags.

If its not a back pack it's gay guys.

I have something similar to this. It's a hip pack but you only ever wear it over your shoulder. Can be worn on the front or the back. Tons of Japanese guys do it, never once thought it looked gay. I think it looks cool.

Wait, why would people think this kind of bag look gay?

If you're doing something that requires you to take things out of a bag while still moving around a lot, sure. Not sure how many situations that encompasses, though.

I've seen a larger version of a similar looking bag at Uniqlo - was a navy nylon though. Also, my uncle's friend from Japan uses a hip pack in a similar manner.

A messenger bag is way more practical than a backpack. A backpack is easier to steal from and takes longer for the actual user to get things out of. Completely illogical how when worn it's easier for someone other than the user to take things out of it.

Are you twelve?

I use my chrome messenger bag everyday (not my pictures or design):

It is great to sling it over quick to grab my lock and get my bike locked up without having to take the bag off.

Plus it is waterproof as all hell.

Yes, they're just man purses.

I still kinda want one though, but I have absolutely no need for one.

Edit:
On the other hand, I still don't understand why fanny packs get a lot of hate. They're like fashionable utility belts. So maybe my opinion is suspect.

I own a messenger bag myself:

Is your bag wearing a cape?

That's just looks like a fanny pack.. Good for tourists!

It was a cold, brisk Saturday when I was to meet a woman for drinks. She directed me to meet her at a restaurant near her house, known to be quaint, unassuming, and friendly to eyes. Having never been there before, I looked forward to the adventure. After parking my car, I got out and began walking toward the restaurant. Approaching the venue, I produced my smart phone from my pocket to text her that I was arriving so she could direct me towards her table. It was then that I had remembered that I had cautiously saved her number on my dating phone, and put away my smartphone to reach into my genuine calf leather messenger bag, 13 by 14 inches with a single compartment, secured with an oversized flap, 18 inches long, decorated in genuine calf hair.

A backpack isn't always more practical. I have a habit of bringing a sketchpad with me a lot when I go out. A backpack would be excessive in such situations.

I don't really care much for others reactions or thoughts about this though. It's really not worth it.

I do agree, however I don't know about the possible theft issues -- I'd rather point out the difficulty of getting your things, the disorganization, and the lack of build quality compared to a full leather Messenger; which mentioned before, is like an actual briefcase, but not.

I don't give a shit if you consider it a purse, it lets me keep a bunch of things on me and I know where my stuff is. DealWithIt.gif, other men.

Seriously: I don't get the whole "is manly/feminine" looks thing most insecure men have going on. So a man is carrying a messenger bag around that looks a little "girly," who gives a shit? It's not his problem, it's yours. :/

I saw someone with one of these and it looked pretty cool irl

I don't call it a purse except to make fun of people when I can tell they're sensitive about it. Also, the first pic in OP... that thing is bigger than the kid is

The only possible answer is to not give a fuck what people think. Besides, some messengers look pretty snazzy.
