Do You Consider Messenger Bags on Men a Purse?

I dont think I've ever tried a messenger bag on across my back like the biker-style ones. Is it pretty comfortable like that?

Very comfortable, as the shoulder strap is much wider and more cushioned than a probably your old backpack's straps. There's also a cross-strap for the chest for added stability.

Personally, if I see a grown man walking around wearing a backpack like he's still in school, I strongly question his character. Any professional I've ever worked with in the real world carries a Messenger. What the hell else is there for your laptop? I'm not putting my MBP in some thin backpack sideways.

Man, I want this. Looks good.

No, I don't. Wow. Ignore list pronto.

No, not everyone is like you two.

No, it's a fact that everyone makes snap judgments throughout the day. To make it sound like you've never judged a person is just flat out untrue. Our minds are made to make snapshot decisions, whether you want to admit it or not, everyone makes judgments of everyone.

The diagonal-across-the-back ones (like Chrome makes) are very comfortable. And when you want to get something, you just swing the bag around until the actual bag is under your arm (instead of on your back) and reach in. It's useful for when you are biking and need to get something. You just pull over to the side, stop the bike, and swing the bag over to reach into it.
Does it ever slide down?

I see Auron mentions a cross-strap. That probably prevents it, but do you need it?

Just from a random Google search, $389. I'm not familiar with the website though so be aware if you consider buying (to be honest they just look like SB copies but I just grabbed an image for reference.)

The Saddleback above is similar but not the same, although Saddlebacks probably have the best quality you can buy, indicated by the price.

Yes, 'wow', for an accurate statement that another human being is capable of judgement just as I am. I also will assume that announcing your ignore is supposed to make the impact of your decision more devastating to me?

If you don't judge people at all on their appearance, in any way, shape or form, on any level of consciousness...then you might have a neurological disorder, because that's not normal.

I would never consider this as a man purse. I prefer satchels over backpacks as they are cooler and trendy - some would say. I use mine for work and travel plus I would feel like a dick having a backpack to be honest.

I wonder if Satchel-GAF and Fedora-GAF are one in the same?

I have an afro, so no?

Oh wow I didn't even notice that wasn't a saddleback.

Aw hell naw. Too rich for my blood.

I wear one and I don't care what people think of it. I hate things being in my pockets and seeing a grown man wearing a backpack makes him look like's he's going to school.

And dont get me wrong, I'm not ragging on messenger bags. I think they're alright. But I would defend that they are ultimately less practical in most situations and wearing them is a fashion choice rather than a utilitarian one. Not saying thats wrong either, though.

My messenger bag allows me easy access to my camera, tablet, memory cards, business cards, and whatever incidental things I have with me for the day. That makes it functionally more useful than a backpack, which I'd have to take off to get to any of those things. And forget carrying everything in my pockets in a big city, where you have to carry everything you might conceivably need on a given day on your person.

The best is the suit with a backpack look I see pretty often. It's always brightly colored northface backpacks too. Looks cheesy as hell.

I use one of these everyday. Easy on the eye, unpretentious, roomy, quality made. Inexpensive as well.

One flaw though, it doesn't have a handle.

Thanks. skewing. I intended to convey the sense that the more stuff one requires to have on hand the more they would possible require externally to be ready, comfortable, and prepared - perhaps maintaining a degree which others would find tedious.

Edit: On further reflection on your comment I think I see what you mean. While skew may encode a sudden change, say quickly transitioning from a purse to a purse-less state, the high-maintenance-ness of a person would perhaps remain a relatively fixed quality.

I've been using a jack bauer bag for a year and a half -- it's great, but the nice olive colour quickly faded into a pale army green. Ridiculously durable though. I imagine the black ones would fade just as badly.

I looked at some nice made in Canada leather messenger bags while vacationing in Banff but couldn't justify >$200 for a relatively simple bag. Would undoubtedly last a long time though.

What's some good manufactures for leather bags? I'm looking at Saddleback Leather satchel to carry my laptop and clothes and stuff.

Waterfield Designs are great. Attention to details, 100% natural leather. Minimalistic design. Perfection.

I have this Muzetto (in a different color) and I couldn't be happier, my Vaio Z fits just fine, like a glove...

They come in sizes that go from 10" to 15".

If you use your camera, tablet, memory cards and business cards on a regular basis while on your feet and moving around a lot, then like I said, yes, it certainly might be more practical. I just dont think thats why most people do it.

This thread is tempting me to get a leather satchel. Need one of those for when I don't want to carry around my timbuk2 messenger. (btw, looks like a bunch of them are on sale at their site).

Here's my bag. It's Fossil, and while I like it, I would have felt ripped off if I had paid full price. They try to charge almost $300 for some of these, and the build quality isn't there. I had to get the bottom corners patched at a shoe repair place because they wore out and started tearing after 3 years. I got mine for $98 on clearance, and for that price I'm happy with it. Take it to work every day, and it's great for my books, mp3 player, lunch, snacks, and mini pharmacy (excedrin, benadryl, cough drops, etc). It's got tons of pockets and compartments, and overall it's pretty great, except for the parts that wore out.

Messenger bags aren't really purses if you're using them to transport bulky items like computers and books. If you're carrying your wallet, cellphone and such in there instead of your clothes, and you carry it 24/7 then yeah it's a purse.

Not good to carry those, fucks up your shoulders if there is any significant weight at all.

And who the fuck cares what style of bag you have?
Oh shit he has a backpack; he must be a total unprofessional douche because all my cool friends have messengers.
Do you judge people on their car and shoes too.

That's why you should carry it diagonally, I don't understand people who carry them vertically. And a backpack is horrible if you are using public transport, messenger bags win easily in that case.

Edit: But yes, for anything over a few kilos, you should use a backpack.

It's less efficient weight-wise so I don't have one but I actually like the fact that they're feminine. If they were more common, you could use it as a talking point with girls who have the same one.

Why not start wearing panties and leggings, too? What good topic starters they'll be.
