Black Ops 2 basically curbstomped Halo 4's concurrents as soon as it came out. This time Halo 5 has to contend with Black Ops 3 AND Battlefront, mere weeks after launch.
Honestly though, it depends on what expectations you're talking about.
HaloGAF's (and by extension, the 1%er hardcore Halo faithful) expectations? No chance. The biggest Halo fans can't even really come to a consensus on which Halo game they like the most. There's large contingents of fans who think CE was the pinnacle and everything else that came after was trash. Likewise with 2, 3, ODST, etc. It's a no-win scenario with this group because too much deviation from the "Halo magic formula" (which, again, nobody can really agree with) causes the old faithful to riot, not enough deviation causes another large group to complain that the franchise is stagnant and that there's no new ideas, etc.
Sales expectations? Will probably continue the downward trend that started with Halo: Reach. With the current install base of the xbone, attach would have to be something like Halo CE (50%+) to get even match Reach or 4, which launched with install bases on the 360 that were something like 3-4x the current xbone install base.
Critical expectations? I think they'll do well. Mid-80s metacritic. It really depends on whether the press decide to go with a redemption-for-Halo-4-and-MCC-343-is-figuring-it-out-finally narrative (ie Destiny: The Taken King), or if there's a hangover from MCC.
Ten million, so you expect an attach rate of around 50%?.
So first question, what's your prediction on units moved in the first 24 hours? First month?
Next, what are your expectations for the community? Will it thrive for a month? Six months? several years? We've all seen the Halo 4 chart (and it hurts me to look at it to this day) indicating that Halo is on the decline with COD taking the throne as the go to multiplayer shooter.
No, it won't unfortunately.
There are some talented guys over at 343 but they are carrying someone else's torch and that torch is a heavy one with a lot of pressure from fans, from microsoft, and from a slowly evolving shooter genre.
From what I have seen I have already been somewhat disappointed. The game lost a lot of credibility with me when it ditched local multiplayer - a series staple. The rest of the game seems to lack identity - the enemies uninspired, the weapons too familiar to those in other recent space shooters, the mechanics chasing other popular fps franchises.
The game will sell a shit ton no doubt, but sadly, Halo will never be what it once was.

What are the expectations exactly?
Killzone has free MP maps.
There are some questions going around:
- Does it feel like Halo?
- Do the gunplay feel like Halo?
- Do the mp feel like Halo?
- Do it look like Halo?
After Halo 4 and the whole MCC fuck up, people are questioning if Halo is Halo and if 343 has captured the essence of what makes Halo, Halo. At the same time ALOT of people are superhyped for Halo 5, just by looking at the numbers of threads here on gaf. From what i´ve seen and read, this game will do excellent and 343 will redeem itself as a good game developer.
Expectations among gamers seem to be pretty low, so I think it will probably live up to, and maybe even exceed, expectations.
Goty 2015 and I kinda agree. Everything I've seen scream Goty 2015 and I am not even an Halo fan.
Plus, I've played the beta, and I think this it is the strongest MP I've seen in my life, except for the auto server choice. Gameplay wise, it's THAT far from everything else I've played, and that's coming from a CS:GO player.
Definitely agree.To me?
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
Leaps and bounds better than 4 from what I've played/seen so far.
Is star wars gonna steal cods crowd? is this all one big vicious circle?
Definitely agree.
Although, what makes me laugh is 4 is the most populated on MCC and always gets voted for the most in mixed game playlists, SWAT/Slayer etc. I also think it's the best MP on MCC, seriously. Actually, not as good as H2:A.
How's this for an unpopular opinion, I hate 3. The BR kills the entire game.
