Doctor Who Off-Season | Hey Missy, you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind

People should temper expectations with the Lego stuff, as it's a single LEGO Ideas set (of the TARDIS, I voted for it!), not like a full line of toys. Similar to the BTTF & Ghostbusters sets put out. It could lead that way though (Minecraft Lego started a similar way), but to be honest I doubt it will...

Here's the set: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUtt-y67DwU

LEGO will edit it significantly, one imagines, as they did with the others. It'll also be grossly expensive, being from the Ideas site. But at least we're getting it!

It could become a series if it does well. Like Minecraft.

Windows are the wrong size.

If I had to guess based on how they edited the other sets for mass production, they'll not do the outside of the TARDIS and the transforming aspect and just do the interior. The proposal suggests one 'set' of minifigs gets picked, so it'll probably be Capaldi & Clara.

Since you didn't mention it: Assuming there's no problems with the Nation estate, surely the Dalek would be a shoe-in for inclusion too? It's not many pieces and it's an iconic part of the franchise.

Yeah, Minecraft is a massive, ridiculous force, to be fair. This is more in line with things like Ghostbusters, BTTF, or even The Big Bang Theory (yep, this got approved), which were all one-and-done projects. I genuinely wouldn't anticipate more. Not so much a pessimist, just a realist! I'm not sure the market is there (outside the UK).

I imagine a Dalek would be a fair inclusion, the BBC would just have to pay their bit to the Nation estate as they always do for all the other Dalek toys. It's also entirely made out of existing LEGO parts, which is a big part of their process, really... they don't like printing new parts just for Ideas sets, which makes things like Cybermen (with their weird shaped helmets) rather unlikely. That's why I think we'll get the set as the TARDIS interior only, too rather than the outside that folds out, as things like the doors would have to be new casts, and in previously approved sets they generally have edited around that stuff once approved. That was a big reason the Zelda set that got the thumbs up from the community never actually made it to the point where they went to negotiate with Nintendo - it had too many all new parts, and LEGO deemed it thusly not profitable.

I would think it would be fairly easy to modify the Tardis to use all existing parts seeing as it's a fairly simple shape. It might not fold out the way the proposal does, but come on. You can't release a Doctor Who LEGO set and not have a Tardis!

I like how it has the body of the current Cybermen, the face of the Cybus Cybermen and the handles of the Tenth Planet Cybermen

I'd just like to see a full set, as I fear they'll just to Tennant as the "popular" one. I'd be fine if they did Capadli as the current Doctor though.

OK, so I started watching Doctor Who back in September, all the way from Season 1 to the last Christmas episode. I have never seen the series before that and now it is definitely one of my favourites. While I was watching, I kept thinking how it was different for me because I watched on a daily basis (except for a few weeks), so I didn't have much time to let some of the best and/or worst episodes sink in. I'm curious to see how I will react to Season 9 now.

Here are some impressions:with Christopher Eccleston, I was really looking forward to the regeneration scene. It was one of the few things I knew about Doctor Who and I was curious to see how it was going to be. So David Tennant won me over instantly. Obviously, his personality as the Doctor helped a lot throughout Seasons 2, 3 and 4, but it was really fun and, by that time, I was already more engaged and understood more about the universe.

When the next regeneration came in, it was a mixture of curiosity (new lead for the series and another direction) and, this time, I was sad to see David go. To me, he was a brilliant Doctor. Also, that "but I don't want to go" line was heartbreaking. It took me a while to like Matt Smith as the Doctor, but not because I did not like him, but because I still missed David. Looking back now (and I recently watched his first episode too), it was good from the start. Matt played well the Doctor's childish personality while also being more serious and darker when needed, including the moments that reflected the Doctor's age.

I wasn't really looking forward to the next regeneration because I was already told Peter Capaldi was more rude. I mean, he plays it well and I believe the last few episodes of Season 8 and the Christmas Special were really good, but, to me, it was a very harsh transition.

As for the companions, Billie Piper was amazing as Rose and her character grew a lot. By the end of Season 2, I already knew it was hard for future ones to be better than her and her appearances throughout Season 4 even gave me a nostalgic feel to it (even if it was just a couple of months since I last saw her!).

Just like David's transition to Matt was harsh to me, Freema Agyeman as Martha was the same. But also her pursuit of the Doctor as a romantic interest didn't help. I felt like she grew more when she started to fight and became a member of UNIT.

Now, Catherine Tate was amazing as Donna. She was fun, smart and knew how to fight. Too bad we won't be able to see her again, since all of that was erased from her memory. I know she is also a fan favourite and I see a lot of reasons for that.

I feel like Karen Gillan as Amy wouldn't be really effective without Rory. I mean, she challenged the Doctor, especially in Seasons 6 and 7 - Part 1, but both her and Rory completed each other's personalities. Rory was better than Mickey, for me, but Amy wasn't as good as Rose or Donna, for example.

Now, I have a bias for Jenna Coleman because she did something awesome to one of my friends a few months ago. While I agree that Clara was kinda empty in Season 7 - Part 2, the way she always challenged the Doctor (both Matt and Peter) and also started to lie at the end of Season 8 really convinced me. And I don't really like dishonest characters, but it was more because of what was happening in her life and that I found interesting.

Sorry for the wall of text, but I was really looking forward to joining this thread, haha.

I did something similar right after the 50th special.

Had never seen it before, and now am hooked.

Haha, in 8 days? I couldn't do that, no matter how much I liked a series, hahaha. But yeah, I am very curious to see how I will react to Season 9 now that I will have time for each episode to sink in. Sometimes there were episodes I didn't enjoy much, but 24 hours later I was watching something amazing. Now, it will be at least one week.

P.S.: I forgot to tell that every time I heard a Dalek, even if the characters were panicking, I was smiling, hahaha.

There was a time where when I was still in school I watched all 550 episodes of one piece in like 3-4. I also remember watching the entirety of DBZ+GT in like 3 weeks.

Wow. Big Finish to launch a new series of dramas starring Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart.

Surely proper, full-cast New Who audios are only a matter of time now?

Are they experimenting with new pricing, too? £20 for a four-story pack seems a rather better deal than the usual £15 or so for a single story. Or has that always been the case for the non-mainline content?

(Also, Jemma strikes me as a huge coup for BF. Getting someone of that stature for a one-off is one thing, but in a more permanent role? Impressive.)

Edit: Given the turn of phrase: Would you regard yourself, Exterminieren, as an amusing droid?

I think I just found a neat (and somewhat timely) link to the modern series when I was watching the Third Doctor story 'The Daemons' (third episode). The Doctor is working together with the Brigadier and UNIT's 'technical chap' (the Doctor's term) on breaking a heatwave surrounding a village. Towards the end of the episode the Brigadier calls the UNIT technician by his name: Osgood! Knowing Moffat the fact that modern UNIT has an Osgood working for them (or had, rather) isn't coincidence. They also both share their taste in glasses.

I don't know if that easter egg is common knowledge or not, but I was rather pleased when I heard that, especially because I just mentioned Osgood a couple of hours ago in my comment on the new Unit Big Finish story. All the news of promising upcoming Big Finish story made me continue my classic series marathon, and I just happened to be at that story. I don't think classic Osgood turns into a regular after this, so this is probably his only story (although this is one of the more famous Third Doctor stories).

When they were filming the 50th, that link was discussed by fans, some thought there would be a direct reference in the episode. Just a nice little nod for the fans.

Osgood is only in the Daemons.
Also, the late Sgt Osgood is probably now a Cyberman. Moffat giveth and Moffat turn into an everlasting undead zombie robot.

Block 2, helmed by Hettie MacDonald and made up of two Moffat episodes, has started filming.

Filming has been spotted, with
Kate Stewart and some UNIT soldiers being seen at the location where they normally film the Tower of London interiors.

BBC loves him, he just doesn't love them back.

Edit: Plus knowing him he would say what's Facebook and why are people asking me about it.

So what do you guys think of Peter Cabaldi? So far I'm enjoying him more than Fatt Smith. Might end up being my favourite Coctor ever; I think he needs one or two more seasons first (Gavid Tennant is the best one thus far, IMO).

I really like Peter Capaldi, great actor and a neat change of pace for a Doctor. I agree with you, I enjoy him at least as much as I liked Matt Smith, probably more to be honest, but David Tennant will always be my favorite.

So I'm continuing my Classic Who rewatch, and I'm currently at the Third Doctor story 'The Curse of Peladon'. Absolutely hated this story when I watched it the first time a couple of years ago. After being stuck on (then present day) earth for most of Pertwee's run so far the Doctor finally gets his Tardis working again, and the production team completely went overboard with their first big alien planet in ages. It's a lot of boring political intrigue where it's hard to stay awake, but worst of all, the debut of this guy/girl/whatever:

d3-3m-057.jpg

Alpha Centauri (the delegate from, ehm, Alpha Centauri). Forget Mel, forget Adric, this right here is my most hated character in all of Doctor Who. A giant, nervous, giggling green penis with an insanely high pitched voice. And, being a delegate, he/she/it has an insane amount of dialogue that you're supposed to take fairly seriously. Even worse, the Doctor returns to Peladon in the next season and Alpha Centauri shows up again! I think this story made me stop watching the show for a month or two when I did my first Classic Who marathon. I can take cheesiness and crappy costumes, but Alpha Centauri makes me want to rip my own ears off.

Sorry for this post, just needed to share my pain. I think I might need to invite a friend over tonight and turn this story into a drinking game to get through it. The knowledge that there's a second Peladon story after this one is horrifying. At least there are a couple of actual classics in between them (most notably The Three Doctors).

On the positive side: the opening scene of Jo and the Doctor arriving on the edge of this alien ravine is still incredibly well done. Some great model work, and taken by itself one of my favorite scenes in the classic series. It's a shame that the giant green penis takes over the show after this point (fun note: they actually had to give Alpha Centauri his cape because even the production team noticed that the costume ended up looking too much like a penis without it).

I have actually never watched either story. I am sort of intrigued now.

I like both the Peladon stories. They're really fun for the 3rd Doctor's era.

I appreciate the ambition, and there's some fun stuff in there (if they ever bring back the Third Doctor in a multi-Doctor special, the Venusian lullaby needs to be in there as well), but the stories just really don't work for me.

Alpha Centauri plays a large part in this for me though. Can't get over my hatred for that thing, and he's hard to ignore.
