Sounds like
she'll be back very early on in the season within the first few episodes.
I'm on board the hype train! :)

YESSSSSSSSSSSS. Moffat knows when he's got a good thing going.

Hope she's like the Delgado Master, popping up in various different stories to cause mischief.

Michelle Gomez is so lovably bonkers in her own right, too. She's just great.

Looks like we've got another two-parter on our hands to kick off the series- The Magician's Apprentice/ The Witch's Familiar. A series of 6 two-partners confirmed?

BBC Press Release said:
Michelle Gomez arrives in Cardiff this week to rejoin the Doctor Who cast and reclaim the role of ‘Missy’ for series 9. She joins Peter Capaldi (The Doctor) and Jenna Coleman (Clara Oswald) for the opening episode of the series.
Speaking in Cardiff, Michelle Gomez says: “Things have been a little beige since I left Missy behind, so I'm delighted to be putting my lippie back on. I'm positively dying to see The Doctor again!”

The second two-part episode to be filmed, The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar, is written by the show’s lead writer Steven Moffat, produced by Peter Bennett and directed by Hettie Macdonald (Blink, the Hugo Award-winning Doctor Who episode).

Steven Moffat, lead writer and Executive Producer, says: “Everybody hide - Michelle Gomez as Missy was an instant hit last year, so she’s straight back to plague the Doctor and Clara in the series opener. But what brings her back into their lives is the last thing they’d expect.”

Having filmed Day of the Doctor in the series’ 50th anniversary special and Dark Water and Death in Heaven in series 8, Jemma Redgrave returns to the guest cast for series 9, alongside the Laurence Olivier Award nominee and film, television, radio and stage actress Kelly Hunter.

A familiar theatre and television actress and one of the UK’s most proficient performers, Clare Higgins also joins the guest cast for the opening of the series. Jaye Griffiths has been gracing our screens in some of the nation’s favourite TV programmes such as Silent Witness and Casualty and also takes up a guest role in the opening episode.

Other guest stars confirmed for the new series include Daniel Hoffmann-Gill, Jami Reid-Quarrell, Aaron Neil, India Ria Amarteifio, Joey Price, Dasharn Anderson, Harki Bhambra, Demi Papaminas.

Doctor Who is a BBC Cymru Wales production for BBC One and will be back on-air this Autumn.

Good news, but never really doubted it.
I'm watching the Pertwee era now, so I'm in the middle of the Delgado goodness. He's still the definitive Master, but she's not far behind.

Edit: Oops, didn't realize that I forgot to spoiler it. Fixed it.

I'm surprised we're getting
The Mistress back so soon in season 9. I also like how the first 2 episodes are going to be a two parter. I'm guessing that means we'll probably get three 2 part episodes for season 9, the ones from the first filming block (episodes 4 and 5 I think), episodes 1 and 2 and probably the final 2 episodes of the normal season. I do like that we're getting more 2 part episodes again.

The Witch's Familiar is an awesome title.

Seems to maybe suggest that the big bad will be someone Missy has been training? Or maybe she gets a companion (finally) and the series is the two pairings meeting up in random episodes. Would be a lot like S4 of the Big Finish Eighth Doctor Adventures which was damn good.

Speculation on the opening episodes, but spoilered because it's based on the first two titles and the news of the returning character:

If we assume the Master is the witch from the title, what could her familiar be? I guess the term familiar mostly refers to a type of animal - it could refer to the Doctor himself (as he often can't do much more than dance to the Master's tune until the final moments of a story), but what if it's something else? The 'good' Dalek that got away in Capaldi's first Dalek story? Evil K9? Alpha Centauri?

I'm guessing the wizard from the first episode is the Doctor, and the easy assumption to make is that his apprentice is his companion - Clara in this case. Could also refer to the Master of course.

Just noticed Jaye Griffiths in that press release too. Finally getting that long-awaited upgrade from Bugs to Doctor Who!

Unlikely, but seeing how Missy will be a recurring character, I'd love to see Clara go to the dark side and join her as her "companion", which would have the added benefit of keeping Clara in the show while still being able to introduce a new companion which is something people have been asking for.

That'd be a neat twist IMO but considering how happy they looked together in Christmas I expect the show to do away with most of the Doctor-Clara drama from last season.

That would be a really cool twist.

Or maybe Missy switches Clara for a duplicate (which I guess is a bit too Amy circa S6 but whatever). Maybe the duplicate could be a shapeshifter who then goes on to become the new companion. Or a plain old Zygon. A Zygon companion has been a long time coming.

I saw this on my Facebook wall and litteraly yelled "YES!!" out loud!

Of course we knew
we would see her again, but not this soon! Probably see her at the end of the episode like in Deep Breath, but I am super psyched to know she will be around for season 9!!

I want the episode to be someone almost becoming a second companion for the Doctor, but he ends up rejecting the person at the end, Missy shows up in a red phonebox to claim the butthurt almost companion.

Yeah, I can see Missy becoming the new permanent anti-Doctor, complete with her own anti-companion. Each episode sees Team Doctor go up against Team Missy. Each battle they fight leaves a trail of devestation behind them, often leaving multiple casualties and fatalities. Their on-going war is felt around the universe, and even in other universes.

The Time Lords, sensing the war, decide it's time to intervene. They work out a way to escape the pocket of time the Doctor put them in. In a final showdone between Team Doctor and Team Missy, the Time Lords step in and deliver an ultimatum to them both - stop the war or be stripped of their Time Lord statuses, and have their TARDIS' removed. The Doctor steps down, Missy doesn't. She 'kills' the Doctor who, as we know thanks to Who Lore, regenerates as The Valeyard. The Time Lords flee, as does Team Missy, albeit injured from the battle.

The Doctor/The Valeyard swears revenge on Missy, and blames the Time Lords for his downfall. A question is then raised - just who is the REAL dark Time Lord? The Doctor/Valeyard, or Missy?

An interesting effort to spoiler tag something that BBC has widely announced to the public in here.

Are we going to be doing this for months while it's talked about in the media or when she's doing interviews prior to the new season starting?

It's a bloody video announcement to boot.

Yeah I agree, no spoiler tags needed really.

Yeah I agree, no spoiler tags needed really.

It's going to be all over Facebook, Twitter and probably some news stories in the UK.

MICHELLE GOMEZ is reprising her role as MISSY in the 9th Series of DOCTOR WHO.

I think we can spoiler tag the second title... I guess. The first was openly announced.

"Missy" was good to keep us guessing in series 8, but I hope for series 9 they drop it and go with "The Mistress" to better match with her previous identity.

Totally cool with her being a woman, but she's still "The Master" to me, so I'd like to simply call her the female version of the name. Missy is a little too cute.

I would be fine with that. I do think Missy matches the playful nature of the character though.

"Missy" just fits the way that Michelle plays the character. It's sounds like it's supposed to be cute, but there's something so sinister beneath it all that it's even worse than "The Master" or "The Mistress" to me.

I bet they just call her The Master at a certain point. The "Missy" stuff was partially subterfuge in the first place. No need for it now.

I kind of feel that now we know Missy definitively means Mistress we don't actually need to call her Mistress/Master. It's now implied every time we hear Missy, and Missy fits the portrayal of the character.

Yeah, woo! More Missy! Love me some Missy. I'm surprised to see her back so soon though. Would've thought she'd have gotten distracted pulling the wings off some other fly for a while before getting bored enough to torture the Doctor some more. I commend this incarnation on her tenacity.

Edit: And it seems perfectly reasonable to call her Missy. It's what this incarnation calls herself.

I kinda love this weird synthesis of early Pertwee, early Baker and something entirely new that the Capaldi era's shaping into. Having a recurring UNIT cast and a recurring Master only cements that further.

thank fuck you guys are seeings sense with the spoiler tags. this thread was in seriously danger of looking like something from a Freedom of Information release with the interesting bits redacted.

All aboard the Hype Train in Space for Season 9!
