Doctor Who Off-Season | Hey Missy, you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind

It's interesting to see the evolution of the soundtrack through the years.

Series 1 and 2 fit in one disc. 3-5, A Christmas Carol and The Snowmen/Doctor, Witch, Wardrobe had one disc each. 6, 7 and Day/Time of the Doctor being in two, now 8 in three.

What Murray composes hasn't changed that much, mind. He does about 90 minutes of new music a series. For specials (Christmas, 50th, etc) he gets 40 minutes of new orchestra music and has to find the other 20 from old material or synthesize it. It's just we're getting more complete releases now.

Or use some silence. I think that's been somewhat of a problem in the past; the music is so loud and never seems to stop. The music's mostly great, but it sometimes has felt as if the sound editors haven't been confident enough to let the writing and acting speak for itself.

Series 8 was a big improvement, I feel. Part of it was because the music itself was to a larger extent than before subdued in its nature, but it was utilised better too. I noticed it early on in Deep Breath; Clara looking out the window, with the weeping dinosaur being the only audible sound.

It's even more noticeable in the excellent restaurant scene. No music for almost 5 minutes. Then it slowly, creepingly, appears as the scene takes a more sinister turn. Excellent use of sound and music.

I'm really looking forward to the soundtrack soundtrack, especially to once again get shivers from this track (but in better quality):

Enormous grains of salt for this Daily Mirror article- it doesn't match with some of what we know about next season (such as the content of the opener)- but it's oddly specific for something that's entirely made up. Spoiler tags just in case there's a bit of truth in it.

Doctor Who will kick off the new series with one of its darkest ever plots as Peter Capaldi’s Time Lord ponders whether to murder a child.

The dramatic season opener is based on a line muttered 40 years ago by Tom Baker’s Doctor in Genesis of the Daleks.

At the time, he asked: “If someone who knew the future pointed out a child to you and told you that child would grow up totally evil, to be a ruthless dictator who would destroy millions of lives, could you then kill that child?”

Capaldi’s nightmare unfolds after the Tardis takes him to a battlefield where he realises he is face to face with a younger version of his arch-enemy Davros, who went on to create the Daleks.

The dictator, played as a grown-up by Julian Bleach, was last seen in 2009 when he locked horns with David Tennant’s version of The Doctor.

This time he returns to Dalek planet Skaro and holds the Time Lord captive as he struggles to save the evil machines from dying out.

That headline is classic Mirror controversy-stirring nonsense.

Could still be true though, they have been right in the past (like Jacobi regenerating into a new version of the Master, or old Clara showing up in the christmas special). They have also been wrong a lot of the time, so who knows. Apparently some reliable sources on Gallifreybase have been talking about a
Davros story without the Daleks
for a while though, so it could be true.
Rumours of that character showing up have been around before every series of the new era though.

The idea of the Doctor pondering whether he could kill Davros when he was a child makes it seem like a massive repeat of Genesis though. Not that that proves or disproves anything, but it's basically the exact same problem he had when Tom Baker was in the role.

BAH GAD THE DEMON KANE

they're just visiting

I honestly wouldn't mind a Doctor Who film as long as it was separate from the TV show, I don't want an entire 13-14 episode season of Doctor Who replaced by a single 2 hour movie.

I actually think it would be pretty cool to have an older Doctor come back and do a movie while the current Doctor does the TV show, though I imagine the BBC wouldn't go for something like that because they wouldn't want people to get confused to for the movie Doctor to distract from the TV show Doctor, but I would love it.

Edit: Also good to hear that BBC wants Doctor Who around for another 8 years at least, even more then the 5 years Moffat said in the interview, though I'm not surprised. As long as Doctor Who gets good ratings in the UK and around the world, and the merchandise sells I'm sure the BBC will keep making Doctor Who. And because it's in Doctor Who's nature to change the cast out it keeps things fresh unlike most other long running shows, which I think causes people to keep tuning in.

The biggest problem with a Doctor Who film is the physical filming and production work.

Either you do it with the current TV show team, in which case that would limit the number of episodes of the show that could also be produced at the same time (this is the main reason why series 7 got split up as it did), or you do it with a different production team, which Moffat would quite justifiably never sign off on.

Likewise the Doctor; if you do a movie that's going to need to work around the Doctor you choose; filming a thirteen-episode season on British production values is already draining. Bringing back an older Doctor would avoid a clash with the TV show but would be A) confusing and B) a hard pitch to investors. And nobody wants to see a new movie-verse Doctor.

Also, the only reason they want a movie is to make a bit of money on the side and that kind of rubs me up the wrong way.

Oh god the mirror spoilers might be real?
Also I'm all for a new movie, but I'd much prefer it to be an older doctor. McGann deserves a second shot at a movie

It's happening, ladies and gents.

I will buy this soundtrack but i don't guarantee I will like this version of the Theme. I really wanted the Season 7b and 50th versions before this latest middle-8rocity.

That sucks for 2 reasons; would have loved to see Brian Blessed in DW again, and that he's ill.

I hope for that too, though I'm pretty sure it'll never get an official release, i think I read somewhere that Murray Gold wasn't happy with it

They should've used it in the credits, it sounds a lot better. I wonder if there'll be a new theme this year, I know a lot of people didn't like this one.

I actually liked it, it gels with the clockwork of the intro.

But I am all for a new song and intro each season, because I am greedy and want more Doctor Who anything!

And good to see, as everyone predicted, Fear (the one from the end of Listen) is beautiful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYjKxUy-mi8

It sure is.

In terms of beautiful songs, I never catched this beauty when watching In The Forest Of The Night:

The Song of Danny and Clara

I found it in the episode now, but it was so low in the mix you didn't notice it. That lone oboe (I'm thinking of the right instrument, I hope), just gorgeous. The series 7 soundtrack was great, I think it was one of the best ones of the show, but I'm liking the latest season's score even better.

speaking of Middle-8

the original version of The Five Doctors end titles
https://youtu.be/xUNZ3i20-gs

It's basically the 60's theme sped up slightly and merges into the early 80's theme for the middle 8.

This, 7B and DotD are about the only versions of the theme tune never officially released.

During the off-season I've started watching Torchwood on Netfix.
It's okay, I'm somewhere in season 2 at the moment. Does it get much better? Anything worth sticking around to see?

Jack's pretty much all Torchwood's got, IMO. The characters are fine, and Ianto's pretty great, but Jack is the best part of that show by far. Of course, my friends all like it way more than I do, so what do I know.

Season 3 of Torchwood is amazing and totally worth watching.

The rest of it not so much.

Around "Adam" through to the end of season 2 it gets a lot better, season 3 is amazing, and there is no season 4.

I'm a fan of the back half of series 2, but series 3 is on an entirely different level. Quite possibly the best drama to come from Cardiff in the last 10 years.

In two recent interviews Christopher Eccleston has expanded on why he left Doctor Who, this article is a nice summary. I did enjoy this quote in particular:
what's interesting in this country is whenever a story like this is emerging, they concentrate on the negative. I don't think it's important that I left, I think it's important that I did it in the first place

Fair play to him. We got an excellent series out of him, and he left an environment he wasn't comfortable in. It's interesting that he's apparently more willing to talk about the series now than he used to be.

Still think he should have done TDOTD, though. :P

It's so nice to hear him talking about it with a little levity. The stories you hear suggest there might've been some bitterness as the time, so it's great that it seemingly hasn't lingered too much.

Still think he should have done TDOTD, though. :P

Especially considering there's a big chance all three of the people he clashed with in 2005 were long gone by 2013!
