My hope is that it's not just "Smith is out" but "And here's who is replacing him!"

edit: and even further, I'm hoping it's "And his name is Chiwetel Ejiofor!"

come onnnnn missing episodes.

Could be something to do with this:
Ian Levine ‏@IanLevine 30 May
I just heard this rumour - Start date last week in Aug 2014 12 eps. New Doctor. BBC Worldwide email ACCIDENTALLY sent out today to employees

"Its the end... But the moment has been prepared for" Keep you eyes and ears peeled in the next few hours folks! ;)

Does sounds very much like an announcement Matt is leaving. However, it could be that Matt is doing one more series (2014) and then leaving, giving them a good amount of time to cast #12.

According to our sources, the BBC are tonight going to announce that Matt Smith is leaving the show and that we’ll get a new Doctor as of August next year. They’ll also be announcing how many new episodes we’ll get, and it won’t be one of those cut-in-two seasons like we’ve just been through. In fact, we’ve heard talk that it’s going to run right up to a finale that is also the Christmas special.

And Jenna is staying on.

If he regenerates in for August that means he is getting killed off in the Xmas Special or the 50th.

From Bleeding cool.

Wonder if he suffers the wound that causes him to regenerate in the 50th, and the Xmas special is his "goodbye"

OR

The S7 finale, the 50th & the Xmas Special are a loose trilogy that wrap up his run.

Last I heard Matt Smith was going back to filming this summer for post xmas episodes?

Calling it as Smiths departure date, along with maybe just maybe a casting reveal for his successor. But, being Moffat, wouldnt be surprised if both doctors had some overlap rather than a direct changeover, a kinda silver lining to the announcement perhaps?

Either that or its an announcement of a shitty Jenny/Vastra/Strax spin off :p

If I had to guess-if it's not an announcement of Matt leaving-it's the announcement of the rumored web episodes with
Eighth Doctor

With Matt shaving his head, he's either done after the 50th, or they're going to film more episodes NEXT year(Moffat has Sherlock now, and something else after I forget what, still to film) and Matt will be done by Xmas 14.

Matt leaving makes me sad :( Some of his stories were crap, but he's been my favorite doctor since the reboot.

11's stories have been great. Series 5 really set the bar for the series overall, but there are questionable decisions made in his run, production-wise. Splitting Series 6 and 7 into two parts was really dumb, and other story arcs have yet to be resolved and looked to be abandoned.

I'm really hoping Moffat wraps up the exploding TARDIS/Silence arc with 11. I'd like to start off with 12 on a clean slate.

12 episodes, 2 parter mid season. 2-3 parter for the final.

That would make me happy. I'd like to see some sontarans again. Maybe the ice warriors back. I'd like the new cybermen to get a better episode than the one gaimen wrote.

A 12-episode run that begins in August and concludes with the Christmas special as its finale? That doesn't make any sense.

I'm going to miss Matt, but at the same time this is what Doctor Who is about, and that makes it sad and exciting at the same time. Having a new actor bring something different to the table, a new personality and mannerisms, how he deals with situations, and a new set of clothes, lol.

I wonder if they already have someone picked.

Whatever else happens, I just hope we get some better writers next series. Matt Smith has been my favourite of the new Doctors by far, but looking back, his best episodes haven't held a candle to the best in the Tennant era. There's been no Paul Cornell, no Russel T. Davies (who, while mostly shit, had the occasional moment of brilliance here and there) and only a neutered Steven Moffat who was more concerned with telling overblown self-important spectacle episodes than telling great stand-alone stories. This series was especially bad with multiple episodes by some of the worst writers the show has had in the past 8 years.

The Eleventh Hour, The Doctor's Wife, The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone, and the Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang are all top-tier Who. I'd rank them among the best of the Eccleston/Tennant years.

See, none of those even come close to the likes of Human Nature and Blink for me. I feel like, while the Matt Smith era has been the most consistently good, the highs just aren't as high, and conversely, the lows haven't been as low.
