Doctor Who Series Seven |OT| The Question You've Been Running From All Your Life

I dunno how anyone who hates that movie can manage to watch any stretch of Doctor Who. It's really not that bad.

Totally disagree. It really is terrible.

My wife and I tried watching it last year and couldn't make it more than 20 minutes in. The movie honestly seems like it was created solely to discourage people from watching it.

For my money, the best one-off episode of modern Who is 'Vincent and the Doctor'

It's a touching, one-episode story that doesn't really require any pre-explaining (except that shot where Amy is crying and doesn't know why), that showcases everything good and hoaky about the show. It's the best first taste I can think of.

The Doctor getting shot after he steps out the TARDIS is actually one of the smarter things the movie does. That's something I'm surprised doesn't happen more often (it probably would have happened in Cold War if the sub wasn't going nuts, for example).

Plus the horror-esque approach to the regeneration scene was really cool in concept, if (like most of the film) pretty crappily executed. (That was also my first time seeing a regeneration that wasn't the "volcano" effect- I hope they never get rid of that now...)

Just finished the season finale. Is there like, an FAQ or a guide for this episode that explains what is (or may) be going on? I'm a bit confused.

I thought it was pretty creepy.

It's very, very '90s in all the worst ways.

Sure, but I'd argue any day that being 90s in all the worst ways is still better than the last 4 or 5 years of oldWho which were 80s in all the worst ways (some gems aside).

It's saved, imo, by the surprisingly good performance of The Doctor by Paul McGann. People often complain about the hammy Master performance and this just baffles me. He's always been so ridiculously hammy a villain.

And most of the "omg it's so american" kind of stuff people complained about it got rapidly pulled into newWho anyways.

Agree on the Master, yeah. Feel the same about the Simm incarnation too, really, he just landed in some stories with really dud plot lines, but the path the character himself went down was fairly true to what he always was. That's why Moffat doesn't like him as a character, as well.

I thought the Frankenstein-esque regeneration was pretty cool in general.

But yes, the current style they're using is awesome.

The last four to five years of old Who includes Seasons 22, 25, and 26, all of which are among the best seasons of the entire show (old and new). Yeah, Season 24 was godawful, and the Trial season was a bit of a mess at the end, but I'd still take that stretch over most television.

And Eric Roberts Master was horrible, especially when he gave us the "I always drezz for the occasion" line. That's not to say that Ainley wasn't also a hammy Master, but he generally at least had a competent story around him (aside from Time Flight, The King's Demons and The Five Doctors). Roberts is way too over the top, and the story is so bad that nothing else can really prop it up.

I do agree about McGann's performance, however. He did a great job in that movie, and is really the only thing that saves it from being bottom tier Doctor Who.

McGann, I think, has a lot in common with Colin Baker; a great Doctor hampered by a not-terribly-great outing on television, but made up for by later work with Big Finish. Colin gets remembered more due to the length of time he was in the TV role - compared to McGann's single appearance - but I think both were poorly-served by their material but not actually poor performers in themselves.

Some "gems".

A robot materialises inside the TARDIS, with a message from Arcateen V, but a small child soon distracts the TARDIS crew. The Doctor and Clara make a grave mistake in a battle with the traces of the Master. A crack in the fabric of space and time saves the day. Lindsay Lohan is revealed as a new incarnation of Romana.

There are a series of unexplained deaths on Mondas, and they are soon caught up in a mystery. The time travellers have tough decisions to make about the Gods of Ragnarok. A nostalgic 90’s pop culture reference saves the day. William Shatner plays a character who is killed during the opening sequence.

The TARDIS lands on an abandoned spaceship, but the TARDIS cloister bell sounds. Isolated from the Doctor, Clara goes on to have tough decisions to make about the Silurians. A feisty twentysomething actress saves the day. Mark Hamill is the voice of the video-link.

I want to see this one:

A flashback sequence introduces us to Zaakros, and there is mystery in the air. The visitors discover the first Autons. The Doctor’s memories of Rose save the day. Tom Baker guest stars.

So, currently swirling rumours: Smith regenerates at Christmas this year. The new Doctor isn't revealed until the day of the programme itself. Then the new Doctor starts filming January next year for a straight run of 12 episodes, starting August next year.

Except that Smith has been confirmed for S8?

There are a series of unexplained deaths on Traken, but the TARDIS cloister bell sounds. The Doctor and his friend uncover the secret of the first Whispermen. Clara’s memories of her father save the day. Katy from CBeebies appears as the narrator.

Well, an off-the-cuff "I'll be around" comment in an interview I don't take as absolute confirmation, tbh. Especially because in production codes this year's Christmas special is technically 8.X.

As an aside -- RTD considered doing a Who graphic novel for the 50th, but BBC Books said no:
"Don’t ask me about the 50th anniversary [in November 2013], because it’s nothing to do with me,” he says. “I’m just a happy viewer now. This’ll teach me though – I did ask BBC Books if they fancied a graphic novel, and they went, ‘No’. I sat here thinking, I could write a graphic novel, I could even draw the graphic novel, that’d be brilliant… No. There we are then, I tried.”

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2012/10...o-graphic-novel-for-the-fiftieth-anniversary/

Speculation (which I think stands a chance of being pretty correct) is that maybe this was going to be a Time War thing, and got bumped because it clashed with the plans for the actual special. Makes sense. RTD said in the Writers Tale that he had it all 'mapped out' and might one day do it in another medium. RTD began his career writing and drawing a comic strip for a kids magazine, so he has the chops. Shame!

Also on the rumour mill, again: "Beeb either trying to curtail/break/renegotiate Moff's 2 year contract" -- Christ, unstoppable force meet immovable object if true. I feel like if they are pushing him the more they push the more he pushes back.

These people also say the 50th contains (spoilers!)
full on Gallifrey and Time War footage and John Hurt "packing heat."

They also state general staff early scripts of the 50th referred to Hurt's character as
Omega
, which would explain why that perhaps was mentioned so much - deliberate misdirection to avoid people twigging he was a version of the Doctor.

...What the fuck are you going on about?

Why is
The Time War still a valid plot line? We know everybody dies and the Doctor does it, why do we need to keep coming back to this?

Edit: This is the rumour that I hope is true:

Non-fanboys tell me missing episodes really have been found...Spillsbury and Paul Vanezis are just playing it down prior to some official announcement. ( bit like his catagorically stating its untrue DWM are going to a new publisher etc)
Even Evil of the Daleks has turned up,I'm told
Some kinda boxset scheduled whenever..MarcoPolo/Enemy of the World/Web of Fear

Why is
The Time War still a valid plot line? We know everybody dies and the Doctor does it, why do we need to keep coming back to this?
Because it's a huge part of the Doctor's life that we have next to no information on, it's bound to be explained in some way eventually anyway.

Okay, I finished the DrWho movie.

Honestly, it wasn't that bad, kinda on-par with some of the less OMZOMFG-episodes of nuWho.
The problem I had with it is that it took place in contemporary earth, which is my least favorite setting for DrWho episodes. The master was just laughably bad, pretty much a moustach twirling bastard, but the actor for the doctor was actually a pretty good fit.

But yeah, side characters were boring as heck, lack of "fantastical" elements, and a pretty boring end-of-the-world plot.
