It is not wrong to loathe current mainstream hip-hop.

God, yes. :( I miss those days. Doesn't stop me from blaring whatever the fuck I want out of my car speakers with the windows down.

Well by trend I mean the overall style of dress n such. I saw some kid walking around dressed like they are in the videos and man, well. It looked dumb by my standards.

Like how country singers are dressed, dumb.

Yeah, it's just like pop music in general. It is pop music. I'm not going to try to understand it either.

The only hip hop I can listen to is stuff that's considered "intelligent." The rhyme scheme must be on a higher level of thinking, and the musical skills must be more complex.

There's a group called Ming and FS that make music that makes me say "wow." I don't say "wow" very often. I'm sure you've even heard them in U.S. car commercials over the years with a popular sample of Whinnie the Poo asking, "...Is there honey in that pot?..."

But... You're not going to really hear Ming and FS on the radio. They're not some cult of personality, plasttic, or jingoistic group. They're actual tallent. A really good house dj friend of mine turned me on to Ming and FS, and after listening I realized I heard them on college radio two years prior to his introduction.

Other than that, I can't really seem to care about the general stuff played on the radio. Whatever's on the radio is meant strickly to be made for profit. Actual musical tallent gets burried in the sea of crap.

That's even worse.

Which Ming albums do you recommend? I have 35 free downloads left at emusic and they have these Mings FS albums:

Hell's Kitchen
The Human Condition
Applied Pressure
Subway Series

Hip hop has never been a constant. Blame big-business for the current state. If you get your music from radio, TV etc., then you aren't getting much of the good stuff.

Music in general sux right now. Thanks goodness there's old stuff.

As far as dress, what do you wear?

Sometimes I wonder if hip-hop/ghetto culture is just a bunch of random ideas the black community came up with to see what ridiculous things they could start and then get some rich white boy to copy and make popular for other white folk. It's like some joke. Like "hey man, say some dumbass phrase and see if whitey keeps doing it" and then they sit around and laugh.

I do the same shit. And I always make sure it's a band no one's heard of or something obnaxiously loud. Burning Brides was in the system for quite a while. It's Slipknot now. If I pull up to a car blasting some piece of shit rap single of the week I make sure Slipknot's rippin' through my system. Turn the bass up to 5, and use up every watt of my 400W Alpine & Bose system.

=D

Woah. Pump your brakes.

First of all, 'hip hop' and 'ghetto' are not synonymous. You'd have to be pretty un-informed to think so. Second, 'white' America is doing their best to emulate our 'ridiculous' sense of style.

Elitism in any form is wack, especially culutral elitism.

Please. Take your ignorance elsewhere.

True. Every white person I've ever met is dressed like a wannabe gangsta.

WTF is a wanna-be gangsta? What does gangsta garb look like?

No, blacks did not invent the "ghettofab" lifestyle as a way to market themselves to whites, but rather as a way to differentiate themselves from whites who managed to amalgamate (or in many cases, absorb completely) aspects of our cultures over the decades (like original style rock and roll, for instance)

Plus "hiphop" is kind of a "part of a whole" thing. Dressing in big pants and talking in rhyme is not necessarily enough to carry off the image correctly

on the way home from class the other day, i saw some fucking cracka' sporting a sideways baseball cap, neon lights on the car, obscenely terrible rap music being blared "IM LOCKED UP -- WONT LET ME OUT!!", and somehow driving the vehicle even though his body was at a 45 degree angle.

you konw the lean? don't want to offend anyone, but people call it the "black people" lean; as they're driving the car and what not. face planted against backdoor passenger side window as they navigate the car...

simply ridiculous. that, my friend, is a "WANNA BE GANGSTA."

This thread is starting to make me feel uncomfortable.

Whenever that happens, remember that most of the people here resemble:

I can imagine MAF's original post being said in the same tone as the girl from the beginning of "Baby Got Back". "Oh my gawd, I saw some kid walking around dressed like they are in the videos and man, well. It looked dumb by my standards."

And then everybody else runs with it. *shudder*

I wonder the same thing about Punks and Goths.

haha and ICP combines hip-hop and goth. It's the cruelest joke ever.

I just said white America is doing their best to emulate the style. Are you agreeing or disagreeing? Or did you misunderstand what I was saying?

Maybe I misunderstood what you were saying, etiolate. "A bunch of random ideas the black community came up with to see what ridiculous things they could start" can be taken so many ways, I guess.

sporting a sideways baseball cap - Not a black thing, that's his style. You don't want to be wearing a hat while driving, but maybe he had a bad haircut and wanted to hide it.

neon lights on the car - not a black thing, not a gangsta thing. He is free to decorate his possesions however he sees fit.

obscenely terrible rap music being blared "IM LOCKED UP -- WONT LET ME OUT!!" - That song is played out (though it wasn't that bad when it was released, and you can really associate with it if you've ever been or known anyone who was "locked up"), so you can hate on him for that, but listening to rap does not automatically make you a wanna be gangsta.

driving the vehicle even though his body was at a 45 degree angle - he might have been reaching for something, or just find that position comfortable.

He enjoys hip hop, decorating his car, and wearing caps, you enjoy watching the Redskins, Ray "He got no game" Allen, wearing shirts that most flamboyant homosexuals wouldn't be comfortable in, and beeing an elite geek gamer. These are lifestyle choices, stop hating on people just because they made better decisions than you.

I think it would be funny. At the last second of this decade, someone pops out and says "Hey that hip-hop culture thing? Yeah, that was our little joke."

PS: I get the feeling some people here haven't witnessed the pastel graffiti of subarban America.

You might not realize it, but your comments could offend quite a few people. You are insinuating that someones lifestyle is a joke, just because you don't like/understand it.

I find the "wake up, put on the same suit/pants and button down shirt , work from 9-5, come home, watch TV, eat dinner, go to sleep, then repeat" lifestyle to be a joke. You're just living for the sake of living, not doing anything special with your life, afraid to stand out, just going through the motions preparing to die one day.

Or as Thes-One said, "I'm a b-boy for life / fuck a suit & a tie"

So what, it would have been better if he was listening to Nickelback? If I sit up straight when I drive and listen to Tool am I a wannabe "cracka" ?

Besides, Americans was infatuated with gangsters long before there was anything called hip hop.

Most of the rap/hip hop I like is not gangsta oriented since most mainstream gangsta stuff is so fake, phony and just used as a gimmick. (as most mainstream music is)

:lol :lol :lol

where did i say that being a gangsta was exclusively for blacks? find that for me.

thanks!

as for your rebuttals-- :lol

bad haircut? sure, that's it. reaching for something? maybe i'd believe that if that lean lasted shorter than 5 seconds, but i was driving near this guy on the same highway for 10 or so minutes. same stoplights and so forth.. yep, and still the same stupid lean.

i'm sure all people find leaning back at 45 degre angle comfortable,t hough. that's why everyone does it! let's not even mention the safety hazard that arises while driving like that!

i'm a geek gamer? i haven't touched a videogame in about a month. in fact, both my xbox and gamecube are unplugged!

geek am me.

I think its funny how the white kids at my school got all disappointed when they found out that I don't act like that. Apparently, I act white, because we all know white=civilized.

"yo N1gg@ lemme axe u 4 queshon, yi yi!"

"Thank God for you, man. You're so Black!"

You're entire posted said that.

The things you mentioned aren't all "gangsta" either. It's just what this person likes.
How do you know he wasn't heading back to the projects after selling some crack and and killing some bloods?

I wasn't hating on you for being what you are, don't take offense. I was trying to show you that people like to do different things, it can seem weird or stupid to you, but other people might feel the same way about shit that you do.

This is just a question, don't respond with ":lol :lol no I wasn't, see you suck" but weren't you playing cs:s the other day?

It seems like they tend to view their pop culture and trends as normal and anything else as wacky and sad.
