Donkey Kong Bananza | Review Thread

Is this AI? If so can you make a version where the flag and king are Japanese?
It's from Assassin's Creed III DLC.

Nintendo just keeps showing everyone else how to make the best games with the best gameplay in the business! My work day today cannot end soon enough so I can pick up my copy and play this fucking bad boy!

Nintendo's "secret sauce" is making these trivial mechanics feel good/satisfying to do. Jumping, moving around, smashing shit up.
I think people like you really don't understand how much work goes into creating something that feels so simple and so satisfying.
I think I just don't see much difference with Odyssey, which was unique (and has much better art style). Here is the DK Odyssey with some new mechanics. Yeah, cool, but 10/10? Not anymore, imho.

From IGN: "Bananza is a constant crescendo across its 20-hour campaign that hits its pinnacle with an unforgettable finale that cements this as one of the best 3D platformers I've ever played."

Crunch........you never hear about hirings, firings, and crunch. Work conditions are never discussed or you will be blacklisted.

Guaranteed there's lots of hours and crunch constantly.
Why EA, Ubisoft and Activision games are not the best then? I so hard for some of you to accept that Nintendo have some of the most talented devs in the business.

Expedition 33 is locked for goty unless something else comes along.

WIth split fiction in the race, donkey kong won't even be a runner up.
Yeah.....all the big games are out (and COD and Borderlands 4 won't get GOTY consideration).

Expedition 33
Blue Prince (maybe)
Kingdome Come Deliverance 2
Death Stranding 2
Split Fiction

These are all likely the nominations, with the runner-ups being:

Ass Creed Shadows
Donkey Kong Bananza
Doom: The Dark Ages
Ghost of Yotei (maybe?)
Avowed (my pick...behind E33)

That's fine. Not everything is for everyone. Again, a lot of people think of RDR2 and Witcher 3 as 10/10 games, whereas I could not be bothered to complete either of them.

Because Japan is notorious for hiding work conditions
What are you talking about? Nintendo has a zero crunch philosophy for long time… Also.

"In addition, Nintendo is known for having an unusually low employee turnover rate, which is close to zero (averages are around 30%)"

"Of course, Nintendo's comprehensive benefits play a role in this. They have a high rate of paid vacation utilization, offer strong support for parenting, and have a unique point system for employees that can be used for games, books, travel, and more"

Literally seething for pointing out the game applies ancient outdated technology (FSR 1.0) the developers had no reason to use. Nintendo fans are not sending their best in early review threads huh.

Lol @ people saying this is low, or lower than expected.
I was there when Tropical Freeze released on the WiiU and it was reviewed… less than enthusiastically, we may say. "Nintendo tax" my ass.
And whoever tries to insinuate that this was a locked 95+ long before release is a really poor console warrior.
Sleep sound, haters. Donkey Kong is not going to steal GOTY from your pretty good French RPG.

But Kojima totally is.

E33 reviews were pumped up by PS/Xbox reviewers actually getting a passionately well-made and complete game for once and being so flabbergasted it was automatically a 10. The regular players too. It's a good game but some of the reactions online you'd think it was holiday 1998 talking about Ocarina of Time over here.

Kind of a shame they couldn't get this ready for launch 5 weeks ago. Would've been a banger 1-2 punch of launch titles w/ MKW.
There is no way they couldn't do that. This was their strategy. It is weird because while MK is cool, it is not my or my sons' thing so the switch 2 was just waiting for this to drop. If this was a launch title, I wouldn't have gotten the MK bundle and would have gotten this game instead.

Man, Tropical Freeze got such a raw deal. Possibly the best 2D platformer ever made (STILL) and it's, what, low-80s on Metacritic? Get outta here what a joke.

I can't wait to jump in on this one. I just finished 100% runs through all the 3D Mario games from 64 to Odyssey, I just started Bowser's Fury but it's pretty short I hear so I should be able to move to Bananza pretty quick, it looks like a lot of fun!

Looks like the game of the year battle will be down to this three: DS2, DKB, and E33. All this three are great and can be labeled as best this year in there own categories: E33 as best RPG, DS2 best action/adventure game, and DKB best action game.

This is why game reviews (especially aggregated ones) shouldn't be taken as gospel, but instead as a way to loosely inform.

Especially nowadays, where gaming outlets try so hard to stand out with ragebait. The fact that Bananza has zero negative or even mixed reviews is insane to me. Especially since the Switch 2 launch has been presented as super controversial by most gaming outlets.

This game is gonna fuck. The next six hours can't happen quick enough!

Incorrect, DK Bananza will be nominated for GotY at the game awards this year.

Think I'm wrong? Anybody?

The Game Awards (TGA) 2025 will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. DK Bananza will be a nominee for goty unless Nintendo releases a better game before then. I will eat crow like a bitch in this thread if I'm wrong. I don't know shit, just my personal opinion. Keep in mind that if another Nintendo game that releases after DK is nominated for GotY then DK will not be nominated and no crow eaten. However, if no Nintendo game at all is nominated this year at TGA for GotY I will eat crow in this thread in a way that you will enjoy and that will humiliate me. Book it. I'll change my avatar to an Xbox(for 6 months only and I got this edit in right away and I just checked we should know mid November).

it actually boggled my mind after playing it on release.. like how were reviewers not losing their shit over that game. It was exceptional. I remember gamespot had some lame criticism about not being able to mindlessly speedrun the levels because of traps and whatnot. That pretty much made me tune them out.

Welp, I put in for a half day at work tomorrow. I didn't hide why, I told them I'm gonna BE MONKE.

Bout to run to the grocery store for a couple beers and a banana bunch.

Switch 1 had a really good first year spacing out BotW, Mario Odyssey, and Xenoblade 2. Maybe they can get the same effect this year with Metroid Prime 4 as the 3rd game.

Pretty obvious this was a Switch 1 title at some point and I wish it still was as I could pirate it on my Steam Deck. Going to have to wait for the Steam Deck 2 and Switch 2 emulation.

Looks like a good one.
Probably Switch 1 couldn't handle the physics and distruction of the final game

Anyway, it's likely that Switch 2 won't be emulated as quickly as Switch 1

Brilliant to hear. There has been a mini-platforming resurgence recently. If they bring us Mario next year too...

Lol reading the reviews indicate an 8/10 at max..but somehow the Nintendo tax gets it over 9/10..
Its insane that what reviewers lower scores for other platforms for these kind of things but not for Nintendo :-)

Still playing it though.
idk where you are that taxes actually increase the number

From reading everything this seems like a 8.5-8.9 game at best. I think the difficulty (ie being too easy) and the randomness of the exploration and the camera wildin out will hamper the experience a bit for people like me. I'm glad to hear they pay homage to DKC music.
Clearly, an 8.9 game. Not sure where reviewers get off giving it a 9.0.
