Donkey Kong Bananza | Review Thread

First 10/10 from IGN since 2023… That's how Nintendo deal with the haters 😂 With amazing games.
It'd be impressive if it was someone like Edge or similar reviewing this but IGN.

Reviews are just good for console wars, nothing more.
True. Metacritic can be a guide, but 90% is all about your own decision. The best reviewer is our own instinct and discernment. I have allot of games since NES era up to PS era, that I enjoyed allot even if it was not critically well received.

I don't get it. He drools over every trivial mechanic, like "WOWW there is a CRATER if you fall from the height!!1".

Thanks for posting the video. I expected the game to be good, but I wasn't putting much stock in a score from IGN. Now that I watched the conversation with the reviewer at the end, know a bit more about his credentials and why he scored it a 10, I know I can trust it. Really appreciate it.

And the opposite, I've really disliked many highly critically acclaimed games before I gave up and just started trusting my own judgment.

So I went ahead and preordered it yesterday after reviews dropped and downloaded last night. Played for about an hour in the middle of the night because I couldn't sleep. Maybe it gets better but man the camera gets janky when you are bashing through walls. I didn't love it from the start. Will give it another go later.

Really was expecting this to be a 7/10 game when I first saw the reveal. Then when it was mentioned the Odyssey team developed it I was cautiously optimistic about it. Glad it's reviewing well.

Same. I'm always surprised how bad many people are at looking at game footage. A lot of people were surprised at the 2nd trailer, and surprised again at the reviews. Weird.

Many people's media discernment is very, very bad. We also had people legitimately thinking MindsEye was gonna be awesome when it was clear from watching like 90 seconds of a trailer that it was a total dud.

Or just try the game and judge it yourself.
I'm on layer 500-600 (Jungle level) and it's a solid 8. Very good ideas, but it gets repetitive, and the environment art style is absolutely not on the level of Rare. It's even ugly sometimes with a clash of colours (all that violet and rose…) that are too flashy. The 2D levels are way better and pleasing on the eyes.

I kinda agree. I'm enjoying it, but I feel like it's too open worldish, or maybe I wanna find everything so I'm all over the place. (I 100% both the first two real layers, and now on the facility one).

The art style is really terrible which I saw from the trailers, it's really not as good as Mario. Odyssey is still on a higher level.

I highly disagree here, I fucking LOVE the artstyle here, I like like waaay more than Odyssey, especially character model and animation...also for me the gameplay loop is addicting as fuck, it type of game I need force myself to stop.

This exactly how I feel just watching it. I'll start playing tomorrow and this is what I expect. I really wish that they would go back to the Mario 64/Galaxy approach of event based collectables.

Just 4 hours played… This is the best DK game period, and probably better than Odyssey… So addictive and fun.
After playing it I can tell you this isn't better than Odyssey. I don't see myself returning to this game once finished. But Odyssey I fire up here and there regularly. Also Odyssey is far better polished product.
8/10 game for me.

Opinions. I like DKB a heck of a lot more than Odyssey
