Donkey Kong Bananza | Review Thread

Lol reading the reviews indicate an 8/10 at max..but somehow the Nintendo tax gets it over 9/10..
Its insane that what reviewers lower scores for other platforms for these kind of things but not for Nintendo :-)

Still playing it though.
Sounds like Expedition 33 will continue to hold it's crown as consensus GOTY so far, going off of these reviews.
Lower than Astrobot?

From reading everything this seems like a 8.5-8.9 game at best. I think the difficulty (ie being too easy) and the randomness of the exploration and the camera wildin out will hamper the experience a bit for people like me. I'm glad to hear they pay homage to DKC music.

Wccftech - 9/10

"Donkey Kong Bananza doesn't monkey around, as it's inarguably the biggest, most ambitious 3D platformer Nintendo has ever produced. Taking the formula established by Super Mario Odyssey as a starting point, Nintendo goes deeper, wilder, weirder, and punchier. Donkey Kong Bananza is perhaps a bit less refined than the near-immaculate Odyssey, but if you can overlook a few minor brown spots, this banana is very much worth peeling.

Pros
+ DK and Pauline make a cute team
+ Surprising focus on story and lore
+ Smashing things to bits is a blast
+ Strong suite of abilities for DK
+ Large, complex, original levels
+ Engaging core mission design
+ Eye-catching, varied visuals
+ Fun, nostalgic soundtrack
+ Lots of replay value

Cons
- Some visual bugs and the odd FPS issue
- Actual platforming is relatively simple
- Boss designs are hit and miss"

I don't know how you guys keep saying this.
Most Nintendo first party games always start at 10 by default and then lose a decimal point only in case of some heinous crime.

This was bound from the start to be the most obvious critical darling of the past two years.

I agree, they are the most consistent developers on the planet. You can clearly see what is an A team game, a B or C tier developed game from a mile away from Nintendo.

Mario Odyssey team was only going to drop an absolute banger.

when youre actually having fun playing a game (imagine that) you tend to be more forgiving of its flaws. other AAA devs could take note

It's so odd to read and listen to reviews where the main word used to describe the game is 'fun'.

The whole industry appears to have forgotten the concept.

Not always dude. And someone was really expecting Donkey Kong to be their Mario/Link type of GOTY?

There is always someone who says this about every single first party game from Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft.

Who knew that you don't need grand atmospheric, cutting edge ray traced graphics or mediocre celebrities trying to branch out to different genres or orchestral, academy award composers or consistent, on the face social messaging or hyper-realistic characters mo-capped in advanced facilities or a story written by a hungover David Cage who drank bourgeois wine and snorted Kojima farts last night?

You don't.

You need an insane, rabid fanbase, a very accessible portable console and an expensive, exclusive game. oh yeah, game is well designed and fun. that too, yeah.
