Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze |OT| There's always money in the banana stand

I'm confused. What button is the run button? I know the roll button and grab, don't see a run button. Just finished 2-2 and had to do jumps with timed speed bursts.

No run button. Rolling and jumping are your tools to combine. And if you have a secondary character with you, you can roll infinitely if you repeatedly press the roll button.

Made some new strats and now have WR in 2-4 :).

My start is really weak though and I don't really know the mechanics that well. Is there a site where all the little speedtricks are explained? I think I can cut some time from it if I know what to do.

There's only a run button if you're playing with the dpad. The left stick acts as both walk and run otherwise.

2 Things I love about this game.

It recalls that SMW/DKC/DKC2/Yoshi's Island '90s platformer bliss of knowing that there's a cool secret hidden somewhere in a level, and replaying it endlessly in attempts to uncover it.

Also, when you survive for a long time without dying, you get to some late part of the stage music that you don't normally hear, which is a reward for playing well in itself, because some of them really jam.

Fantastic title and another 'point to' feather in Wii U's cap.

just played world 3 level 1

Fantastic, isn't it?

easily the worst game i've ever played

Agreed.

I feel like such a moron. I spent half an hour trying to find the secret exit to the level above the first mine cart stage not realizing it had already been unlocked from collecting all of the KONG letters in world 1.

This game dumps on DKCR from lofty heights and yet some game journalists gave it a middling review score because it's not "new" or "innovative" enough. Fuck this industry.

Any thoughts on whether dpad or joystick is superior for this game? I've tried both so far (pro controller/gamepad) and not sure yet.

The lack of Miiverse integration seems weird, there are no per-level tags for posts, miiverse posts on the map, or in game prompts. Along with the game pad just being blacked out during game play it feels kind of like a "Wii HD" game and not a WiiU game.

Music is awesome and I'm loving playing this on the big screen in HD, I only played DKC3DS before and never had the SNES games.

Questions about the collectables.

Do you have to get all pieces of a certain thing (KONG or puzzle pieces) in a single run? I'm asking because I'm not figuring out a way to see on the map how many pieces of something you already got, only if you got them all or not.

How do I get the G in the first level? Do I need to play as Diddy and shoot bananas at the target? Are there character-exclusive stuffs to get, like in 3D World?

Look, fuckwad. If this game doesn't use the gamepad in a new and magical way, then it deserves to be shit on. Kind of like how every PS3 and 4 game gets shat on for not using move controls.

Notice how the level dot is in the middle of a stone square? That means it's the level that gets unlocked after finding all of the Kong letters. Just letting you know so you don't end up spending 30 minutes in 2-2 looking for a secret exit that doesn't exist like yours truly.

You have to get all 4 Kong letters in a single run, but not the puzzle pieces. In fact even if you die after you get a puzzle piece before reaching another checkpoint you don't lose it.

To get the G jump on the penguin with a helmet on the platform to the right and then throw him at the target.

So am I to understand that two secret levels in each world are unlocked via exits and one is unlocked by getting the KONGs? Because I didn't find another exit in the mine cart stage either.

The game does feel like as much of an advancement over Returns as DKC2 is over DKC1. I still think they shouldn't try for the hat trick for a long time. Let DKC rest for another 5 or 6 years and figure out a good way to bring DK to 3D platforming.

I go d-pad all the way. Its how I play DKC1-3 and Returns so there's that. I tried analog....bleech.

The lack of Mii-verse integration is odd, especially considering the game was delayed twice.

That said. Was DK64 considered to be a good game? I had it, but felt mostly that it was a game for the N64 to flex its muscles. That world was amazing to run around in, but I don't remember doing anything else.

As I said earlier in this thread, I have a problem overall with the whole DK:universe. I don't like the characters, the setting or anything. Nothing Donkey Kong appeals to me, and never did.

Cranky Kong seems to be designed for the express purpose to make the boss battles easier. I don't see any reason to go into them with anyone else.

I fucking love this game. At the end of the year I'm convinced this will be in my own top lists.

I loved the original DKC trilogy so much, and thought DK64 was one of the most tedious games I've ever played. The 90's collectathon at its breaking point.

(Thankfully, DKCR and TF have rebounded incredibly well.)

The world 4 boss is kicking my ass. I really need to get better at swimming.

Sidenote, I really love how all the levels feel joined together, especially in world 2. Spending the entire world going up, then the boss taking place on the mountain you keep seeing in the background, coupled with how the time of day changes between levels. Really makes the whole world feel coherent. I wish there was an option to bypass the map though, because that detracts from that a little. Also, 3-1 was just as magical as this thread led me to believe.

2-K was something truly wonderful, boppingly good times.

Having now played every stage in Bright Savannah I can safely conclude that it's one of my favourite worlds in any platformer, great selection of stages, music, scenery and all that.
Frantic Fields might be my Tidal Terror equivalent for this game, the stage I love for its central gimmick being worked so well into the stage design as well as a being memorable one visually. I guess platforming against the elements is what makes things a "feature length" adventure for myself.

Upon returning to World 4 I think Diddy's underwater ability might be my favourite, it's just too fun to burst forward in an unwieldy manner making it like the pseudo roll jump of underwater segments.

Not sure if this was mentioned, but here's something I stumbled across in 6-4.

Right after the first checkpoint, you'll find the giant bat from Returns frozen in a block of ice in the background, grinning at you.

The best DKCR cameo of World 6, I love that bat and the death he wrought on many a player, best enemy design of DKCR

I wouldn't play DK64. I loved it at release, but now I'm not even sure how I played the thing through to completion. I think it was Rare's worst output on the N64.

Man this game is so good, beat the final boss and now coming back to complete all the secret levels, just finished 3-K and man, that game is so great, but the best is when I'm going to replay it all in the future.

I foresee a DKC marathon in my future :D I wish Tendo could put back the DKC trilogy though, dang what a shame, my trustee SNES is here to save the day though.

You can recreate the DK64 experience by bringing your friends to a park, and having them only collect things of certain colors.

I hate that game to an extreme degree.

Have them go one at a time too.

I love the story was that the reason the N64 expansion pack was included with DK64 was that there was a bug that could not be fixed without it.

Play Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie instead, man BT is already a complicated game, I don't know how Rare thought having to manage 5 characters was a good idea.

Every once in a great while, I do the "turn music down all the way and watch Donkey Kong play a 3DS game" thing.

GREAT GAME.

From about world 2-2 onwards this has grown on me quite considerably. Some incredible stages there. Up to 3-2 now.

The control are a bit bothersome for me though.

DK64 was really flawed in certain aspects (collecting specifically) but the things it did take to itself from the DKC series is it's penchant for varied movesets and massive, immersive worlds. The amount of adventure involved in the game is unparalleled and nothing compared to the amount of pay-off you felt when you finally reached Hideout Helm, blasted through the level and then got to go face-to-face with the King himself. Still one of few boss fights that really has you go all out with everything you've learned and I love it.

Just because DK64 had a lot of tedious moments doesn't mean they shouldn't try doing it again. I still replay the game on the occasion simply because it has so many enjoyable elements to it. DK has a lot of potential in 3D and if Mario is going to continue the timed linear level setups I'd really approve of something more classic with exploration involved.

Honestly I find DK64 more tolerable than Tooie because each level was treated as it's completely own thing where-as Tooie had a lot of back and forth interconnecting with levels, and DK64 had none of those excruciating escort missions or Grunty fucking Industries.

The choppiness in the loading screens is just retarded. How this went through the infamous Nintendo cert is beyond me.
I'm not particularly bothered by the stuttering loading screens, but in lieu of these, I would have certainly prefered some kind of 8-bit Donkey Kong-inspired micro-game, offering items or stamps as rewards.

Nitpicking criticisms? Here's a couple of mine.
Bringing up a menu has a slight delay before you can move the selection box to other options. A few times I've brought up a menu, hit down then A and had it not move, so pick the first option I did not want. MINOR.
No restart option for levels. If I don't want to use a checkpoint, to restart a level I need to exit (suffer a loading screen) and re-enter (suffer another loading screen). SLIGHTY ABOVE MINOR.
I'd add:
-The new "plucking" move lacks of impact (sound effect and rumble).
-Navigating through the map feels a bit slow and jerky in comparison to recent Mario games.

Although I know Dixie gets you the farthest, I think I might enjoy Cranky more just because (and his death Ducktales pogo stick jumps).
