Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat is the Best Platformer (this generation)

Maybe I'd consider buying if Nintendo announced a sequel or some similar projects or something, but it's too much of a hassle to keep some goofy peripheral around otherwise. It annoys me enough that I have a pair of Samba maracas collecting dust (but I'm still too stubborn to get rid of). Nintendo has a terrible track record when it comes to supporting their goofball add-ons and with Cube development slowly winding down I am almost sure I'd be left out in the cold.

But does it really matter if the bongos come free with the game? I mean honestly, you're stretching for a reason not to buy. You have Konga, Jungle Beat, and Konga 2. Konga 3 was announced in Japan, so I'm sure it will find it's way here. 3 games that can be used with free Kongas.

It's not so much the cost as much as the bongos would just be another piece of useless crap in a house that is already packed full of useless crap. My interest in the rhythm/music games is virtually nil since the song selections are generally lame (and ithe interesting stuff isn't even by the original artist).

I might get suckered into a purchase if Blockbuster doesn't carry Jungle Beat, but that's about it.

Man, you people sayinig you won't buy this are fucking idiots.

Why do you play games?

To waste as much time as you possibly can?

or to have as much fun as you possibly can?

Do you play games for fun, or not?

Thanks for the impressions and pic Oli, keep them coming (is that fur-shading I see?). I like how they have a blow up of DK on the side showing all of his actions while playing through the game. The graphics and animation are great from what I've seen from the videos on IGN. It would be so cool if NOA included a Donkey Konga segment in the game where you can bongo along to the music in this game. I hope there is a multiplayer mode too...

Dunno yet if I'll get this. There's no way to know if I'll play this enough to justify it, but I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy it.

Why not get rid of something once it becomes "useless"? But that can't be a good answer since it seems so painfully obvious.

Is it just me or does Donkey Kong look like Homer Simpson now?

Or recognize its rapidly approaching obsolescence and don't get it in the first place!

As for why I keep all manner of other crap, well, it's hard to just throw stuff out. You hope that it might increase in value, or at least you tell yourself you'll ebay it sooner or later. I'm definitely trying to reduce the amount of clutter in my life at the moment though...

This could end up being like Star Fox 64 for me. Hated by many, but I love it because it's so fun, it warrants several replays. Multiple paths helps SF64, which I'm not sure I saw in any DKJB impressions so far. Hopefully the game will be around $20 next Fall.

I can think of a couple levels where you can take different paths. Well, there are a lot of optional side paths that lead back to the main one.

Well, that isn't what you've been saying up till now. But sure!
I think that's exactly what I've been saying. The congas don't look useful so I won't purchase them for a four-hour game. Sucks if the game is really that good, but there's plenty of other games to play..

Is it kinda like Kirby & the Amazing Mirror that way?

I personally like my games built into levels, but K&tAM's way is okay too.

Well, you're wrong!

Oh, OK. Now that you've said that we can suggest that you buy the version of Jungle Beat without the congas. There you are.

I really wouldn't suggest playing without the Bongos.

Purchasing it sans drums would be silly. My plan would be to rent the game, buy a set of drums, then return the drums at the end of the rental period.

Net cost is then $7 for 10-14 days now that Blockbuster nixed their late fees. If I can beat it as quickly as BuddyChrist (less than 3 hours) then that should leave me enough spare time to run through it 3-4 times. I wouldn't say I'm really the type to beat a game over and over though...

You're not taking into consideration the fact that your hands get absolutely destroyed from the constant clapping, though. I could only play it for about 3 hours total the night that I got it, and even then I was trading off levels with a friend. The pain becomes unbearable. It may be the most physically ass-kicking (non-rhythm) game since Mario Party 1!

I refuse to let the pain stop me - if worse comes to worse, I just tap the side of the drums. Sure, it isn't as satisfying as clapping, but at least I can keep playing.

I really can't stop playing this. I think I've unlocked everything.
The final boss is pretty easy cheese. I just hopped back on his head after every attack

This really is the best platformer I've played since the Super NES.

Excellent impressions. Thank you. Definetly looking forward to this game, and your impressions make the wait even more unberable.

I do have one question though. Are there any variations to boss fights, or are they all just punch out bouts?

There are four basic variations, but I don't want to spoil them. Plus I'm lazy. They play pretty much like you'd imagine the boss fights to be, with lots of running and jumping and clapping. The Punch-Out types are the only ones that take you out of the sidescrolling element for the entire fight.

Thank you very much. I might have been tempted to read the spoilers so your laziness helps both of us. :lol
I can imagine some of the boss fights getting extremely intense with the mastery of the bongos needed to conquer them.

what
score do you have to get for platinum
?? ill be damned if i can get it even on the first level. admitedly ive been wrapped up in VJ2 lately and havent played DK:JB as much as i could be, but still... anyone know if you unlock anything else
with all platinums
?

I would assume you get something, but I don't know what, exactly.
I got a platinum when I finished one stage with over 1000 bananas. They were falling out of the tree, heh.
But then again, that could alter from stage to stage, as I've only got one. No time to play lately :(

Anything Punch-Out or Punch-Out like makes me 100 times more interested in this game.

Same here, I was hyped for this the first time I saw the punch-out like fight in the promo vid around E3 time.

In a dutch mag this month was a interview ( well sort off ) and the director of the game said there was another game with the Konga controls in development and it has nothing to do with the DK franchise .

Odama, the feudal japanese military pinball game.

It was from the same team as DK Jungle beat . So it isn't Odama , and the said that it would be a bit like Dk Jungle beat and that he would like it if we play the ''new game'' with friends and beat each other's score .

Nm, beat the part I was stuck at.

I do agree with Olimario though, this game is the essence of the great platformers of old. It has something that's just missing from platformers these days IMO. The game feels like the ultimate mix of Sonic 2 (speed and always moving forward doing crazy stuff) and the depth of Super Mario World (combos, hidden secrets). My only complaint is that my hands HURT after like 20 mins of playing and some of the bosses are hand-destroying.

Definitely 9ish out of 10 and it'll be a strong contender for GC GoTY 2005.

plus all the different territories have different track lists... although I'm not motivated to get the US or PAL versions myself. I have the first two from Japan.
