Hear me out.

The main reason I want to buy a Steam Deck is to play my games portable. Games like Street Fighter V, Monster Hunter World and Assasons Creed would be nice go play in short bursts. I can play Assassin's Creed to grind and do side missions. Monster Hunter I can quickly get in a game and do a hunt, or collect resources. With Street Fighter I can have some quick casual matches online.

The probpem is I won't be interested in these games as soon as the eventual sequels come out. Street Fighter VI, Monster Hunter World 2 and etc, we don't know how well they will run on Steam Deck. This generation is taking a while to get going due to chip shortage and covid, so will likely go on for a while. We need to wait atleast until 2023 to see the proper sequels of the big games. And by then mobile tech will continue to improve and I'm sure a eventual Steam Deck 2 will release in 2023/2024. Yes you can easily say then why not wait for Deck 3. Well it's about timing if the eventual Deck 2 can handle next gen only games and you get one around 2023/24 that should carry you throughout the entire gen which most likely will last a long time. However I just can't see the Deck able to handle next gen only games. So the Deck will most likely be a system for legacy games and cross gen games.

I don't think you understand the concept of timing.

A generation lasts around 7 years with a bit of cross gen for extra added years of support. Why go by console generation you ask? Well 90 percent of games release target these consoles. So the smart thing to do is ensure the device you are buying can handle that generation, or else by the time the sequel for your favourite game releases you will drop it. Of course this is if you only insterested in Deck for legacy content then I guess my OP doenst matter but I'm talking strictly about buying a Deck to run games from this current generation. Yes technology always gets better however with consoles they have fixed technology for around 7 years, and the lowest hardware in this case Series S will be targeted for 7 years.

If Monster Hunter World 2 and Street Fighter VI come out in fall 2023 that's only 2 years you get out of Deck. If you just wait until these games come out and bought a Deck 2 around then and the Deck 2 can run those games you would get atleast 6 years out of a Deck 2.

I don't see why not, if not from Valve by another player such as GPD or Aya Neo. But honestly I can easily see a Deck 2 release as we will get RDNA3 Zen 4 and etc. Once more next gen only games release on PC Valve will know what to improve to get these games running.

Actually you are wrong here. For example with PS4 generation it was a good time to buy a PC a year after PS4 release to comfortably run all the games from that generation. It's all about timing, and I personally think the timing for Deck isn't great to run the games for the entire generation. Yes there will be a Deck 2, Deck 3, Deck 4. What I'm saying is which one will allow you to play the games from the entire generation at the most earliest timeframe.

personally to me, the steamdeck is about convenience and like the series s/switch, i don't need a cutting edge hardware as much for a device where convenience is the main pro. The only reason I am getting the steam deck is cause I can't rely on my phone's battery life and tetris effect doesn't work via remote play on the xbox side.

Also those guys aren't making the device at the same price point.

I used "rarely" in the post you quoted, not never - the fault here is that you're applying "generations" to a PC which doesn't work, there's no such thing. A PC is a PC, you'll be able to downscale modern releases to run on a deck in a way that consoles simply can't do. There's no fixed point in time where it will be good or bad. Just get a deck if you want one and upgrade it later if you want/need to.

I think you'll be able to make some money out of it. Currently, people have to wait for Q2 2022 to get that one. I'm sure many would be more than happy to part with an extra £100/150 to get one in December. Unless it reviews really badly. I suggest keeping your preorder.

Which games run how well? We do not know
How many decks have to be sold to be so successful to make a Deck 2 worthwhile? We do not know

What I do know: I will preferably play old games and indie games on it and I expect the deck to handle those games wonderfully.
However, if you expect to be able to play all new titles with the Deck for the next 5 years without any problems, you might be disappointed.

Not missing the point at all, you could wait for the 3rd steam deck and get better graphics again but the point is you will always be waiting as there is always something better around the corner

Yes new tech always release. But the Series S the lowest comon denominator will be targeted for years and years, buying a PC or Deck you want something that can last and play all game releases that target a Series S. After a majority of multiplatform games come out for consoles which are fixed tech that have a lifecycle of around 7 years.

Yeah, sorry, this is nonsense. The latest Battlefield is going to come out and will run on a base PS4, hardware from eight years ago, or it'll run on a PS5 from 2020, or it'll run on any PC that can run it. We're in the age of cross-gen and developers making software way more scalable across the board. A Steam Deck is a full-on PC, not a console, you'll be able to scale it down as much as necessary/possible to get it to run.

You're just reciting the age old PC fallacy of "don't upgrade, wait". You can wait for a Deck 2 if you like, but a game will release soon after that would run better on a Deck 3 if you just waited instead. It's completely unavoidable.

Will “Steam Deck 2” run games better than Steam Deck? Yes.

Will there be games that are capable of running on Steam Deck 2 that can’t run at all on Steam Deck? Probably a few but not many.

Is it worth it to forego enjoyment of Steam Deck for some indeterminate length of time and wait for the hypothetical Steam Deck 2? Nobody freaking knows and nobody can make that judgment call for you.

I'm still deciding between a Deck (even with the pre-order shitshow I reserved one fast enough to get one December) and upgrading my current PC.
The handheld aspect seems great, many control options and since it's not an ARM/Android shitbox, you can actually emulate PS2 properly.
But even with all that in mind, it's just not a very powerful machine.

I like the idea of Stadia having it's own Deck knockoff. A platform designed to stream content and eliminate hardware, selling hardware that would likely rely on streaming? Despite phones existing? Absurdity. Sign me up.

The Alienware UFO concept was built already. The Aya Neo is already on the market. Deck's success won't let the competitors get away with subsidized pricing. The real kicker would need to come from platform sales getting a cut from Steam client itself.

It's not the age of cross gen. Perhaps for indie games. But the cross gen age will be over sooner or later. Cross gen age is just longer this gen which makes sense due to chip shortage and sharing similar architecture. But we can already see from announced games that 2023 will be the point the cross gen phase will be over.

Yes, because we're going to be seeing cross-gen games for a long time on consoles. None of the big 3 Playstation releases for the next year are PS5 exclusive. But your Steam deck doesn't care what "gen" BF2042 "belongs" to, it's just a PC game running on the hardware level you've paid for.

Your Steam Deck 1 will run Street Fighter 6. Will it run it as well as SF5? Probably not. Will it run better than the inevitable SF7? Yes. It's a PC. Generations do not apply. The problem you're describing is as old as PC gaming itself, it's not a Deck problem, there's a reason everyone in this thread is saying the exact same thing.

If steam deck sells well, then developers will have an incentive to make new games perform well on it. They could build a native version rather than use proton and tweak settings especially for the deck.
