Doom (2016) PC performance thread

Just grabbed this during the Steam sale and while it runs very well on Ultra settings I'm finding the sound to be a bit lacking. I'm playing with headphones and it's very loud and punchy, which I like, but everything sounds like it's right next to my ears, even stuff that's far away. It's actually making combat a bit more difficult because I'm having trouble knowing where enemies are based on sound.

As far as I know I'm not running any third party EQ or any sound stuff in the Windows mixer, so I'm not really sure what I can try to fix it.

Edit: The more I read into this apparently that's just how the sound is? A bit disappointing having heard so much praise for the sound in this game.

Yeah the mixing is a bit of a bummer.

IMO the guns and enemies all sound really good and the soundtrack is amaaaaazing, but, yeah.

The mixing makes everything a little muddy. Wolfenstein TNO and TOB had this issue too.

Agreed. Pretty poor audio work all around. I play w/ music off and the environmental ambience cuts out way too often (not that it's even remarkable anyway).

Has anyone else gotten any juddering/chugging camera movements starting in level 4 (Argent Tower)? The game has been butter smooth up until this point, but some angles I view very long draw distances I will notice the movement seems sluggish like the framerate is dropping, my framerate is capped at 60 and doesn't fall below that point, and frametimes are smooth when this happens with plenty of horsepower to spare on my 980Ti.

Lowering settings doesn't help and I've tried every combination I can think of with NVCP VSync/TB In-Game/VSync/Borderless and Full Screen modes. Also it seems to happen in the same spots every time. I haven't tried playing around with V-Sync off, but will get to that if it's something I can't rectify using VSync.

Remember that area, made me quit the ps4 version as it dropped frames all over the place there

Got it on pc, playing on ultra with a 6700k + 970. didnt drop a frame in that area. Cpu limited?

I feel like my CPU laptop is holding performance back a lot (6700HQ), which is interesting since other games run just fine. Doesn't matter what resolution/settings I have, the framerate just keeps randomly fluctuating with yellow/red cpu metric numbers.

Could cpu priority always defaulting to low for some reason, be the reason?

I seem to get random sustained dips to ~40 fps on my r9-290 is this a file loading thing? or do i need to turn down settings? its odd because i can run around at 100fps but sometimes i get these dips.

Are you using any of the nightmare settings? / what is your CPU?

I literally restarted the game from the beginning 3 times today. If I died about 25 minutes into the game, the game would crash in the death menu and was in such a state that I had to reboot my computer. Tabbing out, Alt F4, Ctrl+Shift+Escape were all useless in the black screen of death. Oddly enough, every time after I rebooted no progress was saved whatsoever... The crash logs have no useful information.

Running on a r9 280x. Also trying to stream.

Going from 1080p to 1440p really hammers the FPS (On Ultra). Unexpectedly so. I won't even play this game on a 980 as a result.

I just set it to stock ultra settings. and I have a i5 3570k overclocked to 4.2ghz. Normally I'd just dip the settings but that it usually runs completely fine and just get these infrequent sustained dips makes me not want to.

I have the exact same setup as you and was having these drops because my card was getting way too hot. I cleaned my case and configured some things for better air flow which gave me better temps and fixed the drops for the most part.

Any idea what your cards temps are while playing?

Will Vulkan save me from stuttering?

Everything on high, fps stays 60 99% of the time, but it stutters. Lowering settings doesn't do much against stuttering. My CPU is i7 4720HQ

Also another question: Does motion blur setting in video options disable object MB as well along with screen MB? If so then can I adjust them separately somehow?

i get ~80 c so I'm not sure its that.

Holy crap, the 'I Am Vega' area runs like crap compared to the rest of the game. I am getting sub-30fps here and it's making it hard to play. Is the whole area like this or just the beginning?

Bah, can't the Vulkan patch get released soon so I will know if stuff like this will be improved.

I can cut my fps in half by taking one step to the side in this area.

New Nvidia Game Ready drivers added support for Doom Vulkan, so I'm hopeful. Trying to push constant 120hz ULMB, and my 5820K@4.4Ghz is bottlenecking me a lot. Hoping Vulkan helps with that.

Uh, just play it on high settings like I did - 980 at 1440p here and I never had it drop below 60FPS.

Some settings can go to Ultra without a performance hit (the amazing AA is super light in terms of resources). Just check guides to see what matters and what doesn't. Will take you like 5 minutes of tinkering to fix it.

This is relevant to my interests. Was this made note of in the Driver Release notes?

No. And I can't find any official mention of the .69 being somehow better suited for Doom Vulkan. No idea where that originated. The profile for Doom's VK version was in the drivers since the first R367 (368.22) release I believe.

When it stutters, does the frame rate just suddenly tank at certain spots in the game? And it then goes back to normal when you leave that spot?

I dont know if they fixed this but the game ran very smooth 60fps for me at 60hz when i beat it at launch except for some moments where the game would literally stop. Like, pause of a couple of seconds a few times as if it was caching something. This tended to happen if i backtracked through a level. I have a 980ti and 16gb ram so hardware isnt an issue.

Nah, fps stays locked 60 most of the time while stutterIng.
Actually similar thing happened in Wolfenstein New Order. In that it was very smooth when I played back in December, but when I wanted to continue 3 months later it was stutterfest everywhere while fps was still 60 . :(
All other games work great as expected.

Ah, ok, that's not the same problem I'm having, then. My frame rate will just tank at certain spots in the game for no apparent reason, and if I walk away from those spots, frame rate becomes normal again. And in those spots, my performance metrics on the right side of the screen spike like crazy and is all red.

Yeah, sorry about that. Seems I jumped the gun a bit there, it's not in the actual release notes.

Honestly as great as the game itself is, this is one of the most pitifully unstable fucking titles I have experience for YEARS. It crashes like, every 2 - 3 hours, sometimes to such a severe degree I have to hard reset my computer because it's just an unresponsive black screen with cursor. On top of the sound cuts out constantly on the menus, sometimes when I start the game the menu is totally silent, other times there is music, no reason why.

Now lately it crashed the INSTANT I loaded into a level. Restarting my computer fixed it for now, but still... what the fuck.

I usually get the worst of these problems, but haven't experienced them.

I have a GTX 960 and an i7 4790k. Also have 16gb of RAM and a Samsung 850 Evo SSD. Runs exceptionally well (60 to 120fps). Sucks to hear all of these problems. =(

How CPU-dependent is DOOM? I've only played through the first couple levels and have only had like one tiny drop down to like 57fps or something. 1527p, Ultra/Nightmare graphics. My CPU is a stock 4670k.

Also, I'm downsampling on a 1080p TV, but I honestly don't see much difference with 1527p, not even in terms of AA, but I already have the in-game AA turned on.

Weird, this has been one of the better performing games on PC this year. I'm usually getting 100-120fps at 1440p with no drops or hiccups. 5820K, 980Ti, 16GB RAM.

Did experience 2 crashes to the desktop and researched the issue. Turned Virtual Texturing Page Size to Medium in the advanced settings and haven't had a crash since. All other settings are maxed out. Didn't notice any difference whatsoever by changing this setting.

Hmm so I lowered the texture memory from "Nightmare" to "Ultra" and it seems to have fixed the problem.

Guess they weren't kidding with the name, because it was a fucking nightmare. No crashes in about 5+ hours, so I think I'm in the clear here.

So I just started playing this, and I realize I'm probably late to the party. My performance is really not great, going sub-30 in many parts of the game, but 50-60 when nothing is happening.

Here is my PC specs:

nVidia GTX 770
Intel Core i5-2500k Overclocked to 4.5 GHz
16GB DDR3 RAM

I know I don't have the latest and greatest here, but I feel like I should be getting better than this. Setting the "Overall Quality" on "Low" still only gets me 30-40 FPS. This doesn't seem right.

I'm also running at 1080p.

Definitely update your drivers if you haven't. The 770 should be able to keep 60fps at High settings with zero problem.

Still nothing

I took a few screens with the performance specs on Nightmare...

This was on "High" overall setting with MSAA.

Your GPU utilization doesn't make any sense to me... tried rebooting? Almost feel like it is stuck on low power mode. Also try lowering texture related settings to medium to see if it is VRAM limited.

What is your CPU? You are getting 45-88 ms CPU spikes in those screens. If your CPU high time ms matches your GPU high... that means a cpu bottleneck.

I'll give it a try after work.

I wouldn't think I'm CPU bottlenecked, but who knows.

I have:

2500k @ 4.5ghz
8gb ram @ 1866
290x

Should I be able to stay around 75hz @ 2560x1080 on high? Will my 4GB VRAM be an issue on Nightmare?

My Titan X usually use around 8GB VRAM on 1920x1080 with textures set to Nightmare, but I don't know how much of that is just caching to available VRAM.

Awesome CPU performance improvement while staring into nothing. No more spikes to ~33ms every second.
At least so far...

Edit: Can't cap the framerate with RTSS anymore and Vsync options don't work
