Doom (2016) PC performance thread

Anyone care to explain the numbers on performance metrics? Just downloaded the demo to see what the fuss was all about. My GPU consistently shows 0 ms while the CPU averages between 7-9ms during game play and 16ms during cut scenes, which coincides with the 60 fps cap during said cut scene. I guess I don't know enough about frame time and why my CPU number is always yellow.

Just to clarify the game bounces around from 90-130+ fps. And it should be noted that Vulkan is not available in the demo, still stuck with openGL 4.3

I don't get it...

I put it on the "Low" preset and am still getting shitty framerates. This is both on Vulkan and OpenGL.

And my settings I am currently trying, which seem to make almost no difference from Ultra...

It is just my (aging) CPU, a Titan X + a Core i7 920 @ 4.2 Ghz can be surprisingly limiting if you aim for 120hz. That and that area of the game was one I knew where there was a large API bottleneck going on (low GPU utilisation and a large draw distance with many unique objects)

The 920 though is still pretty awesome though: 60hz is basically guaranteed in anything but Star Citizen or a Total War game, basically.

Love this CPU. Mine still works today as well as it did back in 09 when I got it. I don't use it now though, I built my wife a PC with it, but it's easily one of the best CPU's I've ever bought in regards to value for money.

Turn anti aliasing off completely and I never bothered to check mine but your CPU usage seems kinda high. It mightt be all right though but turn off AA definitely.

I actually mistyped though, I have a 930 which is basically the same thing (just a bit more overclocking headroom IIRC).

I've probably asked before, but what CPU cooler are you running on that 930 OC ?
Sitting on a i7 930 myself and actually must buy a new cpu cooler ASAP.

I'll give it a try. And yeah, that was one of my concerns. I'm not sure why, as I hear of people using this same CPU, even at stock speeds, and running it better than me.

Changing settings do barely anything for me as well. Resolution is what gives the biggest fps gains.

Are you idling at 61c? if so, your probably throttling in game.

CPU temps are way too high for idle.

Yeah, you've got a point, I may need to drop my overclock. Are you running stock speeds?

Or I just need to blow out the dust, which I haven't done in a few months. I might try that first.

Yeah...

I have my 2500k @ 4.5

I idle around 31C depending on ambient temperature.

I have an AIO liquid cooler.

Runs amazing with Vulkan, Ultra settings with just a couple things turned down getting 80-90 FPS @ 1440p w/85% resolution scaling

R9 290 / 3570k i5

Edit: Meant to say though I did get my first random crash in the Argent Enegery Tower level

Check for dust and make sure the fan is spinning. Also what voltage you running.

May also need to re-seat it if you have thermal paste around.

Just blew the dust out. Idling at 46-50C now, lol.

Much better framerates now. I'm playing with the settings to figure out what I want to play at. I tried Vulkan and it seemed worse than OpenGL for me, but then I tried to switch back and the game crashed and refused to launch, so I have to verify game cache.

Launching gives me this window:

That is still really pretty high. Idling should be in the 30s.

I'm not sure what else I can do short of trying to take my whole PC apart and dusting everything. I think I have some thermal paste laying around (and if I don't I can always pick some up off of Prime Day).

Regardless, I'm fucked as far as playing Doom goes because of fucking Denuvo. I'm actually considering getting a refund because of that shit.

If you don't want to wait until then just check and make sure your fans are all working and blowing the right directions. If that heatsink fan is on the wrong side it's not going to work well. Depending on when you put it on I have seen people say the fan fails after 2-3 years too.

The fans are all spinning. Just to make sure, the Hyper 212+ Fan should be on top of the heatsink, right? This is with the case sitting at it's normal orientation.

Edit: Just dropped my clock speed and voltage to stock. Still idling at ~43C. I think I'm reseating and applying new thermal paste on this thing tomorrow.

Tried it out on my i7 2600 + GTX 760 today. It hit a consistent 60fps at 70% resolution scale at medium settings, which used to constantly drop to 40fps, so that was nice! Sadly, I couldn't get a consistent 60fps at native 1080p; drops to 30 would happen regardless of what I messed with. Oh well. Was kind of expecting it, but I guess my Nightmare playthrough will have to wait until I can upgrade my card.

Also, does anyone else get bad drops on the second to last level? The rest of the game runs fine, but that segment struggles regardless of my settings.

Better to aim it so that it blasts out the rear of the case - or the top if you have top case fans that blow upwards. Also remember, just a grain-sized dot or a thin line of paste down the middle of the processor.

Well in that case it might just be the fan. It is blowing downward right now. I can easily swap it without having to reseat the heatsink. I do have one of those upper case fans.
oh hi there denuvo
It let me back in after about two hours, but still, how the hell can they pull shit like that. I don't get the obsession with checking every waking minute that the customer actually bought the game. These kinds of things have proven time and time again to make piracy more common instead of reduce it. I see why there is an effort to crack Denuvo when they pull this kind of garbage.

Yet I'm only running 1080p, I'm not trying to push 4k or anything...
I have a 780 and there are points where framerates drop below 60 too, and where lowering resolution below 1920x1080 gives me the biggest gains (I still average above 60 so I'm fine at that resolution). A 970m is probably pretty close in performance to your 770, with some advantages due to newer architecture but that still produces fps drops at 1080p and lowering resolution again gives one the biggest boosts in performance.

Vulkan doesn't seem to help with my 780 setup though. Maybe it's because I have an oc'ed 3570k paired with it? It helped a lot with fixing the broken opengl performance on my laptop though.

I7 6700k
Gtx 1070
1080p
Locked at 60 using rivatuner

Stutters a bit with vulkan (even though it never drops below 60)

Opengl 4.5 is perfectly smooth.

Hm?

i5 4690
270X 2GB
8GB 1600MHz CL9 DDR3 RAM
In the Argent Facility at the blue pipes I got 40 something fps at low with opengl 4.3.
Now with Vulcan it's 70 and above at medium. Just wow. D:
Sadly the vsync is still shit and still running uncapped and tearing in borderless mode. So the only proper way to play for mi is regular windowed. I don't know if this is iD's or AMD's fault but it's been there since day 1 and still hasn't been patched.

darthbob: RTSS is working with opengl. I haven't tried it with Vulcan. It certainly doesn't work with UWP apps and Mantle.

I7-6700k baseclock
16GB Dual channel 3000MHz RAM
Sapphire 390 8GB GPU
34" 21:9 screen

Doom + Vulkan @ 3440x1440 ultra, TSSAA(8x) AntiAliasing
usually ~70fps, in tense scenes drops to 55

This may be that "5 launches per day" limitation that Denuvo has.

FYI for those of you with AMD GCN cards be sure you're using TSAA or no AA if you want async compute enabled with Vulkan, this accordtoing to ID. In this version they haven't enabled async compute in other AA methods outside of those two options. Another update will be available thus enabling async compute with all AA types. There is an additional bump in performance for using async compute. https://twitter.com/idSoftwareTiago/status/752590016988082180

Interesting, thanks for that!

edit: for the benchmark, is he simply enabling another AA method to disable async or is there a driver level switch?

All you need to do is enable TSAA or no AA in the game. Nothing else is required. Soon it won't matter what level of AA you choose.
