this viking shit isn't doom for me. It's like they took the shit parts of eternal, forgot what made the other dooms doom and just packaged up another dlc

I'm not bothered about this entry in the series tbh

That's fair, but I appreciate them taking a risk at the same time.

At the end of the day it's all about intense violence with tight controls which I'm sure it will have in spades.

I'm not saying the multiplayer would of been good, but are we supposed to just pretend Microsoft couldn't get the help of one of their 800 other studios to put something together?

Yes, they're focusing on making the single player better.

Resources are not unlimited no matter how big the company is. This is a wise decision. Multi was always an afterthought for most.

I've never even bothered trying out the the MP in these and I've never met a single person who is into the MP in them

So not a big loss for me, specially if it frees up resources for the SP

On one hand, Battlemode sucked shit and it'd be a waste to try that again. On the other, DM mode with these weapons would be really nice...

So out of touch smh
Doom was the first online coop FPS multiplayer I played.
Them not having it in these modern games is a major negative to me.

I'll get it on sale if I can get it physical.

Good. Not that id actually worked on the 2016 and Eternal multiplayer components themselves anyway, but they were dogshit and a waste of resources.

It don't really understand why they didn't just take the tech from Eternal and use it to remaster a standalone Quake Arena game in the vein of Q3A though. They haven't done multiplayer well in a long time but they own the perfect template for one.

What, were you not a fan of SNAP MAP?
LOL

They kept adding that crap and I'm like who is this for??

It's like back during the 360 era when every mouth breather was asking if there was a multiplayer mode in every game, so devs started including MP modes that were the video game equivalent of shitposting.

Captain's log: January 23rd, 2025. Today NeoGAF celebrated id Software not being able to put together a multiplayer mode in their newest FPS release. Said it was "actually a good thing, if you think about it". I had the notion to ask if they remembered Quake but decided against it. The smoke was already too thick. Minds, already too melted. The hope was too far lost. I relit my cigar, leaned back in my chair and took a drag to the bottom of my lungs. I never followed the do not inhale rule and I feel less bad about it with each passing day. If they can't follow the rule of looking out for your own dollar, why should I look out for my own lungs? "Are we even in this thing together?" I wondered. Snuffed out the cigar butt and opened Steam. Butcher's Creek launched today, at least we still have David.

THANK GOD. This might be the first DOOM I platinum. I got all the trophies and achievements on both Xbox One and PS4/5 for DOOM 2016 and Eternal except for the multiplayer ones. I was not putting myself through that nonsense.

Well, in Doom 2016 the main dev team didn't even make the MP mode. Certain Affinity of Halo fame made the MP in that game.

such a way to add MP would have been kinda cool. it doesn't need to be a massive part of the package, but a simple FFA and 5v5 MP with basic modes like DM, TDM, KotH, CtF etc. would have been more than enough I think.
have maybe 5~7 maps, a simple map creator like in 2016 and a player hosted server/match browser... I don't think that would need too much of a budget for a second team to work on while the main team develops the single player.

Good. The multiplayer in Eternal sucked ass anyway.
Agreed, asymmetric multiplayer was a mistake. No one wants to play as the demons, this is one area that 2016 did better. Just simple straightforward death match. I was kind of hoping a simple mode like this would come back, but it's all good.
Hopefully there's horde mode or survival mode or something. Really enjoy that in the 2 previous games.

Lame, the best thing about Doom I and II was the multiplayer. I spent years playing these games on Zandronum with other people, so many new mods and maps to try.

Sadly ID decided to chase a trend* instead of giving the players the best possible game.

*and not a very profitable one, considering most singleplayer-only games flop

Jesus a well renowned developer prioritising single player content over multiplayer content, am I dreaming? Unfortunately this is the exception rather than the rule. Imagine if Rockstar did this, I think fans would have an aneurysm!

I wonder if even one fucking person used that for longer than five minutes. I remember booting it up, hitting a few buttons and going welp, ANYWAY.
I played it for several years, there was a small community around it that formed after the post launch updates significantly improved it and people found ways to really dig in and get the most out of it. We had a really good time.

still always suffered from the problem that there was 1000 shit maps for every 1 good one though, none of us were surprised that it failed

fun fact, the kick attack that you see in The Dark Ages trailer was actually cut content from 2016, and we unlocked it through Snapmaps coding and were kicking demons in the head 8 years ago

smh

Dark days... seems like the end of an era from them.

What was the point of being bought by such a big publisher, if those resources they have are not even used to even continue it having both SP and MP? To have a historic IP like this not release with MP is a bit wild and imho, doesn't bode well for the teams they've purchased. It means, the publisher isn't willing to provide anything additional post purchase to any of those teams.

So are we seeing THE BEST DOOM that can be made? Imho, fuck no...clearly more can be done here and they should have just gotten another team to focus on the MP that has a history of it if current ID can't do this any longer (which is wild to hear such a veteran team, not have that mode despite the IP's pioneer history in this)

I can't even say this is due to how many are left from the core original team, maybe this is because that concept is much more complex then 30 years ago.

edit. When one of the pioneers on MP gaming is having a hard time, I don't want to hear fucking shit on how making some MP title is a "safe" thing lol

These MP games require a ton of resources because they are trying to turn them into live services. Avoid that trap completely. Just release a basic death match with full modding support and custom servers. Do nothing else and let modders do the rest.

LOL

It did result in some really cool ones we probably wouldn't have got otherwise though, like the Dead Space 2 and Uncharted 2 multiplayer modes.

Honestly, co-op and deathmatch started with DOOM and it bums me out that it's no longer carrying the torch.

2016's was pretty decent, but it could've been so much better. It suffered from some weird identity crisis as it was an arena shooter but had loadouts, and some other weird issues. It just made me look forward to something made in-house, and better.

Eternal's was made in-house, but was a stupid asymmetrical multiplayer thing that no one wanted, so of course it failed. Launch week you couldn't even find matches on PC. Hugo said the reason they did that was because they didn't want to do deathmatch and steal Quake Champions' spotlight, lol.

In this day and age, I think it's really sad that we haven't seen someone actually make a solid DOOM multiplayer experience. They were so close with 2016, I really wish they took the chances to make it better.

I'm hyped for this, don't get me wrong. But I really miss the days of buying a game (especially an FPS) and knowing you could typically expect co-op and multiplayer to come with it.

Crazy.

The narrative forever was MS studios being dude bro MP fans shooting whatever moves. While Sony was the SP focused company.

Amazing how the gaming world 180'd.

Considering how many games Sony had in development as GAAS, I dont think there is one other company making so many at once. And I'm not talking about some indie mobile dev churning out 30 similar games. But full budget GAAS. And originally all of them were supposed to launch by 2025 if they werent cancelled or delayed.

If all games came out on time, there would be GT7, baseball, 10+ more new GAAS and also the Bungie games as those werent originally part of those business powerpoint slides as the Bungie acquisition hadnt been finalized yet.

Congrats to Tim Sweeney and Fortnite. It wasnt COD that made Sony go ape shit on GAAS. It wasnt FIFA, Minecraft, Counterstrike or any other game. Those games have been around forever. It was Fortnite. You'll notice once Fortnite got huge way back is when Sony really started turning to GAAS focus. Sony really hated only getting 30% cuts from mtx. So they gunned for as many GAAS games as possible hoping to get 100% cuts.
