They really didn't understand the appeal of 2016... who the hell asked for "blockbuster storytelling" and open world exploration in Doom? I still liked Eternal, but that game already had too much lame modern gaming tropes in it. This franchise needs to be a boomer shooter and nothing more IMO.
Idk, I’m thinkin that the doom franchise really needs some towers to climb.

Jokes aside, I like the new doom games but I don’t really think of them as doom games. We have an infinite treasure trove of doom 2 wads out there.

On steam the game is priced £70

Wtf?

Most new PC games are priced £50 max here.

Don't know why people even bother checking the price on the official platforms.

Many people buy from the Store they trust to get support and refunds.
Didn't realize a Steam window could get that big, good grief! :messenger_tears_of_joy:

But yeah I appreciate that but the price listed there if from an official reseller (in this case Gamesplanet.us). Obviously once redeemed you can't get a refund with key sites but if you grab it on the cheap now but find out later that the previews are not too hot, before release, you can still get a refund.

Anyway to each his own of course, just trying to show some alternatives hehe.

Also I just checked out the Finishing Move collective (the soundtrack people) and it appears Andrew Hulshult isn't on the team? I thought he was confirmed as a composer for TDA?

I'm not saying i want them to but imagine if Xbox had actually stuck to keeping all these games exclusive to their console... they had some duds in Redfall and Starfield and let that change their perception on what would make their gaming division successful. ... if only they had the balls to stick to their guns and get to THIS point of releases we are recently seeing. It's all their fans asked for for years but in the end Xbox threw up their hands and threw in the towel. Kinda funny.
Doom wouldn't move the needle greatly for Xbox especially when it's on PC as well. It's far more sustainable for the studio if they get a big sales boost off playstation.

It appears as 80 euros for me, are these people insane? it's a fucking singleplayer FPS with what 12h of playtime for a normal playthrough ? nah im good, this industry needs a reset if a fucking 12h game costs 80euros. I can understand Call of Duty as it has multiplayer, zombies and campaign, thats 3 meaty modes, but this ?? no thanks, I wanted to support a gritty manly game like I did with Space Marine 2, but not at 80 euros, fuck that

they are not insane , they are very smart and let me tell you why

because when a gamer sees a 80 euro price you know what hes going to do ? subscribe to gamepass

they give you two options and gamepass seems like the easier route and your reply will be " But i also have the option to wait for a sale " , sure you can do that but most gamers are in such a rush for the new stuff that they are not gonna wait , most people want things NOW , not later

Society has turned us in zombie consumers and we need flesh now , you dont see a zombie waiting for the flesh to die and then eat it , he goes head first and takes a bite

I loved 2016/Eternal but something about this doesn't look right. Little skeptical of the idea that somehow slower combat is going to be more fun than Eternal.

Textual replies can be exactly the same as oral replies. The only difference is the lack of non-verbal communication.
So it doesn't automatically mean there is a difference in intent.

And yes, I'm aware that there are people who interpret intentions differently, hence why I'm already aware that there will always be people that take things the wrong way.

So my name is just me embracing the situation.
How people interpret that is not my concern.

I'm not any different from anybody else.
Always have a answer for everything eh. Since you have more posts than me and in a far shorter timespan its all clear: Good luck.

The guy from doom is a force of nature, the weapon wheel works, discovering hell in 2016 was amazing, eternal releasing during Covid didn’t impact it, every kill still felt personal and this “dark ages” even if that theme doesn’t work for most people I think it’s a grown up FPS and fills that shooter void on PlayStation, who still doesn’t have an exclusive shooter btw.

Why do the combat encounters feel more like musou battles than the visceral, micro-scale confrontations developing over the course of 2 to 3 seconds of Doom (2016)?

I was thinking that too. This does not look or feel like an idsoftware Doom to me. I had to go back to to original Doom 2016 trailer confirm my memory of what Doom is actually supposed to look and feel like.

If someone removed all the branding from this new Doom trailer, I would have guessed this was some clone/knockoff made by some Tencent studio. The encounters looks so generic and impersonal. The music even sounds like a knock off version.

This is the real Doom:

I agree. id were probably terrified of having another Doom Eternal situation. So many fucking people complained about Eternal being too hard. People suck at video games.

I played the whole game in the hardest difficulty available at first and got sick of it in the last boss, I put it on easy, killed the fucker, and never played it again, lol.

My strongest memory of Doom Eternal is that last shitty boss fight. That is how bad it was to me. I barely remember anything else that happened in that game.

But that awful boss fight basically encapsulates Doom Eternal. The stupid jump pads and level design that make no sense, except as a vidya game. Bullet sponge enemies that you must shoot at specific glowing orange weak points. Overly long and repetitive encounters . Monsters constantly respwaning for no reason except to make the encounters take longer.

These fucking Doom Eternal apologists... It's nice that you enjoyed it, but quite a lot of people didn't. I'm one of them and I loved Doom 2016. I finished eternal, but in the end it felt like chore to me. That doesn't mean I'm "bad at games", it means the game was not fun for me. And it was apparently not fun for a lot of other people as well. Good that they recognise that. If they wouldn't, I probably would not buy this one.

I've been gaming since the early 90's. I finished easy games, hard games and everything in between. But only when I had fun. Doom Eternal was not fun for me. I hope this one is again and I have good hopes it will be.

Finally sat down and watched some footage of this.

This game is officially on wait and see status now.

-The purple and gold circles seem kind of dumb. Are they just QTEs?
-Too many scenes of doom slayer just plowing straight through enemies like it’s an OG dynasty warriors game. Zero strategy needed! Just plow through!
-Getting in the huge mech looks slow, bland, and uninspired.
-The fact that there’s an option to speed up the game makes me think even the devs know it’s less exciting than Eternal and this is an attempt to make a slow game by design at least somewhat more exciting.
- The whole tag line the devs mention of “in 2016 we asked you to run and gun, in eternal we asked you to jump and shoot, in Doom Dark ages you will stand and fight”… uh… what?
I agree with Kyle Bosman here, weren’t we already doing that? I stood and fought with Marauders in Eternal all the time. Fighting the enemies is all we’ve done the last 2 games. Seems weird to point out “standing and fighting” as some kind of special point in the games favor.
- Also the cape is dumb and doom slayer would never wear one. Makes no sense.

So ya. We’ll see. I want it to be good and fun, but at this point I’m gonna need a demo. Don’t feel comfortable spending $70+ on this game. Maybe I’ll sub gamepass for 1 month.
Extremely hesitant and nervous about this now.

They have exact statistics on how many people finished the game, on what difficulty, when they stopped, etc. They must have looked at the numbers and feedback and made the decision to slow the sequel down and ground it. At least Eternal will always be around for people who can handle it.

I hate to admit it, but I rage quit the game on one of the final levels and bosses; something about loosing all the lives I had built up over the campaign really pissed me off for some reason. I have never been that mad at a video game before.

That being said, I don't hate Doom Eternal; I want to sit down and master the game one day; but I can see why it's adrenaline rush difficulty is not for everyone.

Eternal felt like they based it on a mod some super skilled fan made, that should have been optional. It was just too tough for most people, including myself. And Ive messed around with Doom since the first shareware maps. Eternal was more than I can handle 🤣

History told a different story. I remember many nostalgic Doom fans not liking 2016 at first. They nitpicked and complained about a lot of aspects of that game, and there were even a few that called it Doom in name only, especially due to certain enemy designs (like Mancubus) looking too 'cartoony' compared to the original.

Turns out releasing such a great video game in 2016 meant that the whiners/complainers were eventually drowned out by so many people praising it.

Funny, because nobody had faith in id leading up to the launch of 2016. Except for me ofcourse. I like that they change it up with each entry.

The original games may not have been particularly hard but there are lots of Doom WADs that require a lot of skill and are harder than anything in the original game including Legacy of Rust.

I think most objections to Eternal were about the changes to the gameplay loop and the tonal shift towards something less dark and foreboding, and the inclusion of more high-fantasy elements. At least that was my issue with it. The base game isn’t difficult, it’s just not open enough.it has a restrictive combat loop, an emphasis on managing resources and ability cooldowns, secrets were heavily telegraphed and came across as a literal joke compared to the older games and 2016, and the platforming felt very out of place. The platforming is cool the first couple of times you need to do it, but the novelty wore off very quickly and they used it to have a more disconnected, less tight level design. It also isn’t a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but replace the recognizable demons with different models and you have a game that doesn’t look or feel like any previous Doom game. It could easily have been a new IP.

The biggest problem with the new Doom games is the lack of proper mod support. We wouldn’t have to argue like children over whether 2016 was better than Eternal and where future games should take the franchise because there would be a boatload of community-created content to support both games. Quake is pushing 30 and people are still creating incredible maps for it. Anybody that is frustrated that a The Dark Ages is slower and seemingly “easier” than Eternal should go get their fix by playing something like The Immortal Lock. This shit is far more challenging than Doom Eternal:

Yeah those two have me worried. Main reason I loved Eternal so much was because it's a demanding game, asking the player to keep moving and shooting and aiming at weakposts all at the same time non-stop, loved it. Dark Ages seems much more slow and easy. Nice as a power fantasy but I'm worried about it being too brain-dead.

Yeah but those maps have more simple geometry than anything in DOOM Eternal. I would take way, way more effort to make a custom map for DOOM Eternal imo.

Today’s development tools are far easier to use than ever before, even with increased complexity in level geometry. id Tech isn’t any more complicated than Unreal Engine, but the former isn’t open like the latter. When Carmack was still at id, he insisted on making the previous versions source code available under a General Public License. id Tech 6 (Doom 2016) was the first version not to be released under a GPL and it doesn’t have anything to do with its complexity.

Easier than doing Quake maps on something like Trenchbroom? It's not just making the shape of the map, but also filling them with tons of details, props and stuff, which would be way more complicated than any mesh you see in a Quake map.

Even if the nuDOOMs allowed for easy integration of custom maps, I would still assume there would be far less people working on it than there are working on DOOM or Quake maps just because they would take a fuckton of work to develop, unless you are fine with using already made assets present in the nuDOOMs.

But yeah, that's probably never going to happen so it's just assumptions.

I feel like this will be a PC buy for me instead of PS5 Pro. Seems like my 3080 is actually useful.

I can likely go 4K native with dlss quality or balanced to maintain 60fps with a mix of high and max settings.

Eternal ran flawlessly at quality max everything 4K if I recall on my 3080.
