Circana May 2025: #1 Elden Ring Nightreign, #2 DOOM Dark Ages, #15 F1 25, #19 Capcom Fight Collection 2; PS5 #1 Units + Rev

Welfare Estimates:
  • PS5: ~225K
  • NSW: ~75K
  • XBS: ~70K

Last year Xbox was being outsold 4:1 globally

Now it's 3:1 in its "stronghold"

Absolute collapse

My man, these Circana charts are for May and Switch 2 dropped in June.

I guess you forgot to sip your morning coffee before posting on GAF. :P

Yeah, I don't particulary like Circana report to be honest since he started to omit a bunch of numbers in favor of corporations fellings.

But yeah, still strange NS so close to a dead brand as Xbox. I guess next month will be a bomb zone.

I mean after 152 million units sold (and like 40-45 million in the US), with the next console coming the month after, I'm surprised they still managed to sell 77k.

But my only problem is that the NS have 3 model and both sell to different targets, to still got very close to Xbox. Are Xbox in some sort of discount in USA? Or maybe the Series S is carry the sales.

Nobody is buying the OG Switch nor the Lite, everybody is focused on the OLED. And nobody really buys the Series S, people are focused on Series X.

Shadow of Erdtree sold 5 mil in 3 days.
Based on that Nightreign is below Civ7 it sales number should be around 1/3 or less than that.
This is 5 days after release. There's no way to spin this negatively. Nightreign is a huge success.

Also, you keep bringing up the Civ7 table. That's dollar sales. Civ7 launched at a higher price that Nightreign and has been out longer, so yeah, it's going to be higher on that table.

Is it not?

For one of the most iconic gaming IPs, it's at #16 of the year already, despite launching in month #5. Split Fiction, a mandatory co-op game, outnumbered it by a big margin.
Nightreign is 11th. It sold some 3.5 million copies.

Split Fiction is successor to ITT, that sold close to 20 million I believe?

Doom is doing alright apparently, considering gamepass and everything. Much better than what I was expecting at least.

I still see a lot of AC Shadows in these lists. Doom doing better than people thought as well, it seems
You sure?

Doom released may 15th.

Nightreign topped it while releasing on may 30th and it 'only' sold 3.5M copies by june 5th, so sales were lower than that in may.

That means Doom did pisspoor.

Yep, Shadows is above good sellers such as Split Fiction, Kingdom Come Deliverance II and BO6. Funny, you don't hear a peep from the usual suspects. Seems it's doing decently in the US at least.

Are those NSW sales a combination of both NS2 and the others NS version? If so, yikes.

And Xbox is a dead man walking.
NS2 was launched in June 5… this are May numbers… And probably the last time the PS5 is going to be on top of the chart this year.

No....I'm not sure. No one can be sure without actual numbers. When I look at the games Doom was up against during the month and still managed to get as high in the charts as it did then I have a hard time seeing how anyone says it flopped. Couple that with the effects of the game being on a subscription which is known to eat sales then, for me, it did better than I expected. That's not saying the game is a huge hit. There are levels between hit and flop and I don't see this as a flop.

If we had said the game would chart two months after release and be in the top three YTD at the end of May then we would have been laughed at.

It was delayed so they could add data from several PC storefronts.
Will we get June this month too?

If this is going to cause 2 month gaps it would be smarter to just post the usual one, then a later addendum when PC numbers can be added.

This industry moves so fast that this kind of gap makes numbers less useful sometimes.

Like doom the dark ages I'm curious what it looks like here in June closing. GAF told me it's a flop.

Yeah, 2 weeks from now iirc.

The same people who were calling FF7 and FF16 a flop now calling Doom TDA a success are weird. Both Final Fantasy debuted in 2nd for their launch month like Doom. Both FF were higher in the YTD chart too. FF7 was 7th while Doom is 16th. Think about that.

I think the expectations for DOOM and FF widely differ. Did any DOOM game ever sell 10M+? You sorta expect an FF game to do much much better than DOOM.

That's why it's important to avoid kneejerk reactions and be patient. It takes a few months to see how games truly do.
