Dota 2 Beta Thread: [Brewmaster]

Orchid is pretty good now. It 1500g cheaper than a Guinsoo's and is significantly easier to build. I'd probably get it as my first 'real' item on INT gankers like Storm Spirit.
Expanding on this. Orchid's original cost (5025) was far too high. For only 670 more gold, heroes could get the vastly superior Sheepstick (superior because it also provides a chunk of hp, whereas Orchid has a lot of AS and Damage, not the best stats on Int heroes). This was why Orchid was not a very common sight in competitive games compared to Sheepstick. Outside of those kind of games, people made Orchid because the components are easier to farm up, piece by piece, as opposed to big investments such as Mystic Staff and Ultimate Orb.

Orchid is now a viable choice when a team specifically needs a silence (and does not want to spend time farming up to a vyse) and also reasonable on non-int heroes (for example, certain gankers).
Pretty sure neither of these were true in Dota 1. It removes the visuals representing the shield, yes, but the effect of the shield remains.
Well I know it does the latter, because the item description on the site mentions it, but you're probably right on the former. unless it counts as a "damage blocking" effect.

Try this: http://www.playdota.com/forums/index.php

As long as you don't act arrogant, ask blatantly stupid questions, and mention that you're new, people will generally refrain from trolling you.

(The balance debates section is probably the closest you'll get to EJ for DotA)

I feel there needs to be a seperate thread for noobs like me, less salt more pro tips. So where is there a forum like elitist jerks forum?
What information do you need added to the OP, that would help you. Be specific, I'll try to make something to help you out.

Ive notice in alot of pro streams that people auto attack, move a tiny bit and auto attack again. Does this reset the delay vs just standing and auto attacking?

There is no such day.

nah, it's kiting. You can use it to inflate your apm/keep your fingers fierce or to change position without sacrificing dps. You do it on a moving target to negate the followthrough on an attack animation, but for stationary bits it's usually just positioning.

Playdota will probably treat you much, much worse than Gaf. It's funny that Valve picked up Dota, because PD is like SPUF in terms of noise and stupidity, twice over.

All heroes have two values, attack animation and cast animation, and two sub values (start frames and ending frames) associated with each of them.

Take for example Drow Ranger.

Attack Animation: 0.7 / 0.3
Casting Animation: 0.4 / 0.5
The values mean that, when she makes an attack using her base attack speed, it takes 0.7 seconds before her arrow actually appears, and 0.3 seconds afterwards to complete the animation. These times decrease as attack speed increases. When people attack and then move right after, they're canceling the ending animation in order to shave precious seconds off their attacks, allowing them to attack and move at the same time with greater efficiency. This is known as "orb walking", which referred to heroes with attack modifier orb effects (Drow's Frost Arrows, Enchantress' Impetus) and is now generalized to basically mean attack moving with minimum delay between every action.

The same is true for cast animation, which is the minimal amount of time it takes for a spell to activate, and how much time you can shave off by moving immediately after. Channeling spells, obviously, can't be animation cancelled. I believe some other spells can't be cancelled through normal means, you'd have to use the 'S' key to specifically give a stop command.

On some heroes, it is really bad. Look at CM cast Animations:
Cast Duration 0.3+2.4

And then look at someone like AA:
Cast Duration 0.01+0.75

Near instant cast time, and a much smaller back swing.

SF has a pretty long cast animation, its why his QWE feel like they have a delay despite actually being instant:
Cast Duration 0.67+0.4

Sniper must seriously be one of the most useless heroes in the game. What a terrible fucking "carry". I always cringe on the inside when I see my team pick it. Just lost a game because we had a Sniper carry who couldn't do shit when the opponent's actual carries started kicking in. Hohoo hahaa.

I always feel like he's a joke. Not once have I met a Sniper who I was scared of or who I would be awed by on my team.

Also after tonight Phandy is banned from complaining about the quality of pubs.

Need an explanation really, but from reading the NeoGAF channel that Heavy guy seems to have done bad and had Arcane and some stat item at 40mins.

I think what happened was completely different. Quality was hardly the problem, just a little mis-understanding and I wasn't really thinking much. And I got the single worst hero in the game (imo), made even worse by the team comp. Any other hero and things would of been fine tbh. My Lion was pretty decent second game, best support game I've played in a while.

What you can do, is ban me from randoming after the team has picked 4 heroes and everyone says "pick what you want".

Yo dooota beef, but yeah we all played pretty bad that round

edit ; but spooky gets salty rather quick, and sometime give up/go afk rather early on if the game seems like an uphill battle, though I did the same that round to be honest.

Gets better when he builds a Shadowblade, because you know he's not confident in his ability to elude you and survive. 120 gold for dust and the silly becomes a snack.

I've been trying to learn him and in my limited experience he plays much more like a team ganker with late game pushing/semi-carry potential. He seems to share a good chunk of tactics/items with drow, except she's a much harder carry with farm and he has more pushing/early-mid burst damage capacity.

I like him, but his slow/stun are both kinda weak on the effect side for teamfights, and unless he farms up tons he's better at picking off people and disrupting channels and such. He often can't 1v1 anyone all that well.

My personal stats aren't something I particularly care for, considering I'm new to DotA itself and Moba games in general.

Spookie has this tendency to by quite rude in-game chat, belying the fact we "took our time" time winning our first team fight.

He also gives up, types GG and goes afk or stays in base and doesn't move in order to ensure we have no chance of winning.

Edit: No thanks.

Petition to rename Dota-gaf to Salty-gaf 4 lyfe.

I said this on mumble but our open beta banner should just be a picture of salt mine with the Dota 2 logo on it with GAF under.

At the point I had given up it was safe to say, unless we all inherited the power of god, we wouldn't have won that.

Still I was exceptionally salty that game even Lirlond & rac would be proud. Not something I'm proud of but it was an exceptionally poor game coupled with my lack of sleep didn't help.
