Dota 2 Beta Thread: [Brewmaster]

The LoL thread is pretty funny whenever they talk about Dota2, people quitting as they can't find people to group and play against bots :lol

The learning curve is waaaay overstated.

I went from literally never having touched a MOBA, to holding my own to dominating in a couple of days. And that's without even knowing how to create an AI match.

Once Valve gets that tutorial in, it's gonna be even easier.

It's an amazing game. Stick with it.

lol, thought I'd check your profile and for a start you're not dominating anyone. You're playing the lowest ranked players and doing alright.

Play an inhouse :-)

Its really wierd, nowadays I simply just don't care what my score is like that the end. Obviously if its a stomp its cool to have like 30/2, but ALL I care about is winning the game. Winning is a much better than getting a good K/D.

Hence why I thought they might have adopted a TF2 points system or something.
Have it like Points/deaths. 2 for a kill, 1 for assist, then points for healing, some points for a rosh or a building etc etc. You could even do more stuff like a 1hp shallow grave where they survive is a point. A tidehunter ulti that hits 4 heros is a point. 2 wards is a point.

Puts less focus on just kills.
I know its actually pointless but there are A LOT of people that still play with a K/D mentality.

It looks nice but kill death ratio should never be your priority.:)

It's just happened this way. Most of the time I was babysitting my buddy and lasthited those lucky bastards who managed to run away from his mighty sword. She's a pretty good all-around hero, I think I'll stick w her for the time being.

What's going on with the servers right now? They keep going down mid-game for me :/
No idea, just happened to me too. Probably for the better because the other team's Furion got a triple kill. Also yo Insured, those two walls you had w/ resto agha DS made so many goddamn illusions;;;;

not getting this beta in a beta thing. i mean come on, its a beta it's supposed to have some bugs.

They are probably opening the beta phase.stable client for open beta players and Test client for old tester.Otherwise i dont know. And also is nature's prophet is good for a newbie player?i kinda like him.

One reason might be that the game is already being played in tournaments and you really want to have as little problems with the game as possible there, especially if money is on the line. (see the whole mess that happened in the N9 vs Fire series)

I'm pretty sure they already have a system for that in place though. They did it like 2 weeks ago or something. Having a tournament version of the games rules/heros in place. Like in captains mode, they dont add the heros into until they have been our for a bit so they know they are fixed/no bugs and people have played them for a while.

It sounds to me like they might be prepping for a much more 'open' beta. Possibly even the release. Maybe just going completely open.

I'm extremely new to MOBA games in general. Played less than a handful of matches. A friend recommended I start with Pudge. Would you guys agree? I've only played one D2 match so far. Plan to play a lot more this weekend.

i hate it when u randomly disconnect, becuase your provider sucks. get back in the game on time, win the game and then get an abandon for it. i mean wtf?!

Iron Shell is stronger which means his laning/jungling will be more effective.
Ah it did seem abit stronger when I saw it yesterday.

How do you know what rank players you're playing? Besides recognizing the pros.

Not really, he relies a lot on punishing small mistakes, and being good with a skill shot. Not exactly a newb friendly hero.

Don't start with Pudge, you need to be able to mid and land his hook and as a new player you will most likely struggle with both.

Looking at stuff like GPM, CS, and item builds.

Ok, idiot question.

To build a Force Staff, the wiki says you need a Staff of Wizardry, a Quarter Staff, and a recipe.

Where do I get the recipe? I've looked everywhere and it seems like I'm missing something.

I know some items auto-combine - for instance, if I purchase a Ring of Protection and then a Sage's Mask it auto-combines into a Vanguard. I tried to do that with the Force Staff and it didn't seem to work, however.

I've googled but no luck. I'm sure it's something stupid I'm missing. Help, GAF!

Click on the force staff, and you should see three items below it. The Staff of Wizardy, the Quarter Staff, and a piece of paper. The paper is the recipe.

Edit: http://www.dota2wiki.com/wiki/Force_Staff

You will notice on the bottom right. You can see the staff, and then 3 items below it.

Despite your ease to figure out the game it most certainly does have a huge learning curve. Also, the only players you have been dominating are other brand new players. That's where the ELO ranking system places you when you start playing. Glad to see you enjoy it though.

I'm having a lot of fun with Lich. Kind of squishy early but later on his speed and W ability make him pretty solid.

I'm stumbling over the little intracies, like how to use the delivery donkey, not having a teleport to base and these secret shop things. Shouldn't take long to get it but man it is awesome.

My biggest gripe right now is with the gargantuan UI, which covers like a third of the screen.

What's a good place for character guides?

Just yesterday I started playing with a friend and man it was a ton of fun, I played as Tiny and I really liked him so I want to get better with him also know what items to buy, etc.

Any hero recommendations for a new DOTA player who's played a couple hundred LoL games?

lich, specc 3rd skill first and 1st second, use your 3rd ability as much as possible in early game. Buy wards and courier and try to get a mek then no one will complain.

So, have characters really not changed at all? I mean, the latest Lich guide is four years old!

There are changes between the games, but the bulk of the fundamentals are still the same. Also, there isn't a Dota2 guide out there as thorough as that, so that's where you start and you keep up with the changes as you go along.

Most of the guides get updated, check and see if it has a update history.

Also, I think you are reading the dates wrong, the two lich guides are from the End of 2009 and September 4th 2010. Did you read 04/08/2010 as being 2008?

Same here... I spent a good 2 min being absolutely confounded because I couldn't figure out how to even buy an item...(I kept left clicking...trying to drag the item into empty slot...basically everything but right click).

Some people update their guides with new patches, others don't.

It always pays to make sure what you're reading is up to date.
