ok so i've played a few matches with some friends and i think i could maybe grow to enjoy playing this

if i could figure out why things happen

because right now i am just totally lost every time i die or follow the guide to get an item or spell

Depending on how interested you are in improving, it'll be well worth your item reading the guides on playdota and understanding when and why certain items and skills are picked up rather than just following a guide. Other than that it's just playing the game and putting it all together.

it looks like that site is mainly dota1 not dota2

is everything directly comparable between them?

I didn't say I was any better, but normally with a second account the trueskill balances out in about 2-3 games, besides, I chose 'high' when I started in the hopes this wouldn't happen. A lot of these smurfs have 20 wins or so and are still playing with people who have literally played 1 match. I think some people must play one game where they destroy and then feed for a few games to drop down so they can stomp again.

Picking 'High' skill set doesn't do anything. You're still put up against the absolute beginners.

It actually sets your MMR to 2000, as opposed to 1000 (i think) when you select 'new'. So it does put you a lot further up than the lowest tier.

Big Clinkz plays. Wonder if Funnique will start picking it up now. Although I think that RP was really stupid, should have known he had blink and that he would insta-blink as soon as aegis went down.

Edit: God this stream chat is awful. So glad to have Dota TV as an option, people actually talk about the game there instead of trying to be funny.
 
So how does the report system work now and what are the implications? I got reported for being AFK last night (even though I said I would be or 5 minutes, shared my hero etc; real life interfered) :(

I turn chat off in both places. I find it's pretty rare to find anything but trolls in either, but definitely better in Dota TV.

Dota TV chat was funny as hell. Everyone was talking shit on Lumi for saying 'next level plays' every chance he got haha. Then he pulled out 'previous level push'. It was good times.

Also, can't believe Rstars won with those awful lanes, just shouldn't have happened. Over-reliance on the DK, who got smashed all mid game caused Mith big problems.
