Elite Dangerous is pretty fucking good.

Reminds me of playing TIE Fighter years and years ago, but with a lot of depth to dip into. No "bored to death" vibe of EVE Online.

i honestly can't believe that my parents' isp are getting away with charging them like $50 a month for a 10GB data cap on a 10mb connection that is so cruddy that i get lag spikes in every game of dota that i play

it's practically criminal

This is the exact opposite in my view; I think CSGO production/casting/panels are on a whole different level compared to dota. It's like kiddie pool versus the country club gentlemen pool whole nother level. The CS guys are just 10x more entertaining in my book (and everything seems much more professionally done despite their conduct outside of the job); from watching and playing both games for quite awhile.

Dota panels are still headed by people that seem uncomfortable around each other (or just socially awkward) and you end up with flat jokes, awkward pauses (and Blitz/Purge), bumbling interviews, and a 50 year old British man trying frantically to patch things up while getting 300 reddit threads of praise every single tournament because he comes off as the only socially adept non-awkward panelist that can hold a conversation. CSGO crews always seems like everyone knows everyone—like they are all bros and it leads to seamless conversation, interesting analysis, and only two pairs of casters with both the voices and know-how to cast (that particular game). Not to mention the hilarious little panel skits and closing ceremonies to keep things light-hearted (i.e. throwing cake in the faces of the analysts who predicted wrongly).

that's cuz guns are cool, so games with guns attract pro-gun coolbrahs who are socially normal for american standards. Dota just attracts dreadlocked ball sniffers, spindly australians who forget to close porn tabs, and beak-nosed white guys who feed negative jewish stereotypes.

I think the first step in having dota casters and panelists not look like man-children is that they should buy suits and shirts that fit. Also, button up your shirts. LD looks like a fucking clown in his 2 sizes too big suit. Godz wears flipflops and shit...

Maybe wearing suits makes everything worse tho because they are not used to wearing in dress so they become even more awkward. One thing I noticed tho is that they tend to look at each other when they talk and then the camera briefly, whereas what ive noticed from news/sports news is that they generally look at the camera and then at their partner(s) briefly to give them queues.

And Nahaz bullshits to fill airtime waaaayyyy to much. "OG is the closest team in the tournament, they do everything together" HOW tHE FUCk U KNOW tHAT OTHER TEAMS DONT? OR THA THTEY EVEN DO. Why can't they just commentate on what they know and not just pull shit out their ass that sounds good.

I agree. Remember no matter how much shine you put on a tird, it is still a tird.

Also check out game two of Navi vs. HR from today...not great Dota, but still lots of fun.

They went to Macy's to buy their clothes at TI5. But srsly Valve needs to reach out to a tailor and get that shit on point.

One of the major problems though is if you are working weird hours with stress weight is not going to be stable. I mean Tobe used to be slim, now he's obese.

I feel like DOTA has some sort of obsession with play-by-play casting and we're all worse off for it. Sure the game isn't great at conveying what's going on to the uninitiated, but it feels so much like commentary for commentary's sake and none of the SC2/FGC/Hearthstone events I've watched ever bothered with that. There would be long stretches of silence in those matches even though the games are much faster paced than DOTA, because the commentators know that if they have nothing interesting to say there's no reason to say it.

The whole "suits" thing is so fucking weird. It fits with a very American view of what sports casters should look like and frankly it looks fucking ridiculous. Many of the casters look downright uncomfortable in their suits. Instead of trying to force this kind of formality, I think they'd be better off with a format closer to, for example Match of the Day. Get rid of the desk, get rid of the suits, and have people who are more casual and more comfortable. The Dreamleague show was actually a good step in the right direction, IMO, especially with its attempts to do some rather more meaningful analysis using the giant tablet thing.

It really shows in the noob casters who will literally play-by-play jungle farming

Pro sports fill it with commercials, so I'd rather have chit-chat than Doritos First Blood replay or the Smoke Gank brought to you by Samsung or the Morton's Salt true MVP choice of champions

i don't think thats on valve, the studios are like outside contractors. That's up to the individual to do. Maybe valve can give them a TI "Bonus" or something but it's up to the person to buy the right suit. They just need somebody who actually knows proper sizings, doesn't have to be custom tailored but just fitting.

Most people who don't wear suits often look uncomfortable in them which adds to the awkwardness, but you would think by now after like 4 years (for some of them) of wearing suits in front of a camera they would have figured out how to look natural in them.

The clothing is just a super minor fixable thing, the real problems are just with strange on-camera demeanor, lack of familiarity/synergy, trying to be funny/edgy, and overt bsing.

agree re: real names

grats on trying to quit (again) toobs

wow based on that tier list white drow is disgusting and OP, how is she even allowed to be a real hero, nasty

that is exactly how I want dota commentary to be like but organizers keep pushing for the talking nonsense nonstop commentary
here is an example on how unnecessary commentary for the sake of just saying anything ruins the match (for me at least) https://youtu.be/3aRSQ-SAvj8?t=5015
could have just been quiet but nope.

I always found that some casters have too many inside joke commentary not related to the game or what the general public knows.

dota needs more emotional casters like james chen

tobi and odpixel and synderen are good but two of them are shoutcasters and only one has the know-how to be an analytical caster

overall pretty hard to be a good caster at dota, the knowledge base required is absolutely immense in addition to the need to have an engaging and entertaining personality as well. else you just end up turning into an LD. dota players are freaking ruthless, i know i tear apart casters as soon as i detect a poor analysis or bad call by them

you should try your hand at casting. You are knowledgeable, upbeat, unafraid to explore the meta, a little off the wall, and have a wonderful voice.

I think that llamadownunder girl is going to be fast-tracked to a big studio. It can't be an all white male production with 3 merlinis

All I want is good obs. Too many first bloods missed. Too many times I'm looking at the minimap and all the icons are overlapping top lane while they're focused on whoever is safe farming the bot lane.

honestly shes not a very good caster at all atm, people complain about tobi's accent but llamagirl's is actually much worse

im not saying she can't potentially become a good caster, but people saying 'llamadownunder should be casting bigger events its so refreshing cu shes a girl lol' are actually just being sexist.

I've seen her stream a few times. She admits that she isn't a top tier caster, but said she was committed to getting better.

Maybe she deserves a shot at something slightly bigger, maybe then she'd take it more seriously and fix her speech. Sheever has improved a lot over the last few years (I assume from elocution lessons), and I doubt that would have happened if she wasn't given chances. That said she isn't very good at all, so I dunno.

self-improvement is critical towards anything you're applying yourself in, so good on her yea, and i never discredited her attempts to improve. However, wasting potential viewers/following/profits by putting a subpar caster into a slot is just stupid from every perspective, not just a business one. If a caster wishes to move up on the totem pole, they should exceed their current expectations and move up to larger tournaments, not simply be slotted into something as big as a 6+ digit tournament due to their gender as a vocal minority has clamored about over the last 2 monthes
