Whats interesting to watch is so many Techies just falling off in most of the games I play. Even with an early lead they seem to have issues keeping their stuff set up. Huge mine cluster set up, gets one kill and is gone.

I imagine it's because people instapick Techies then realize they don't really know what to do after their one trick is used up.

Well today it felt more like I was going up against people who have played Techies before, but they simply had minimal impact on the map.

You really can't ask a question like that. It depends on what's going on in the game, what heroes you have, what heroes the other team has, how the game is going, etc. Deso is good, blink can be good, mjollnir is good, AC is good, BKB as well. It depends on the situation you are in.

Alchemist seems like such a broken hero. I vowed to support, didn't take Grevil's Greed until I absolutely had to, bought wards - and still I tanked their whole team at the end and killed 3 with the ult + green ooze.
